    Transport Properties in the "Strange Metal Phase" of High Tc Cuprates: Spin-Charge Gauge Theory Versus Experiments

    The SU(2)xU(1) Chern-Simons spin-charge gauge approach developed earlier to describe the transport properties of the cuprate superconductors in the ``pseudogap'' regime, in particular, the metal-insulator crossover of the in-plane resistivity, is generalized to the ``strange metal'' phase at higher temperature/doping. The short-range antiferromagnetic order and the gauge field fluctuations, which were the key ingredients in the theory for the pseudogap phase, also play an important role in the present case. The main difference between these two phases is caused by the existence of an underlying statistical π\pi-flux lattice for charge carriers in the former case, whereas the background flux is absent in the latter case. The Fermi surface then changes from small ``arcs'' in the pseudogap to a rather large closed line in the strange metal phase. As a consequence the celebrated linear in T dependence of the in-plane and out-of-plane resistivity is shown explicitly to recover. The doping concentration and temperature dependence of theoretically calculated in-plane and out-of-plane resistivity, spin-relaxation rate and AC conductivity are compared with experimental data, showing good agreement.Comment: 14 pages, 5 .eps figures, submitted to Phys.     Fractional exclusion and braid statistics in one dimension: a study via dimensional reduction of Chern-Simons theory

    The relation between braid and exclusion statistics is examined in one-dimensional systems, within the framework of Chern-Simons statistical transmutation in gauge invariant form with an appropriate dimensional reduction. If the matter action is anomalous, as for chiral fermions, a relation between braid and exclusion statistics can be established explicitly for both mutual and nonmutual cases. However, if it is not anomalous, the exclusion statistics of emergent low energy excitations is not necessarily connected to the braid statistics of the physical charged fields of the system. Finally, we also discuss the bosonization of one-dimensional anyonic systems through T-duality.Comment: 19 pages, fix typo

    Research on evaporation of Taiyuan basin area by using remote sensing

    International audienceTaiyuan basin is enclosed by hills and mountains, located in the middle of Shanxi province, standing between longitudes 111°40'?113°00'E and latitude 37°00'?38&deg00'N. With various types and wide distribution, the mineral resources are very abundant in this basin area. However, there is a great shortage of water resources. Due to continual fall of groundwater level caused by excessive extraction of ground water, some severe environmental problems are induced in this area, such as ground subsidence, etc. The goal of this paper is to estimate the spatial distribution of actual evaporation over the basin by using remote sensing data. The Surface Energy Balance System (SEBS) has been developed (Su, 2001, 2002). Using visible and infrared satellite remote sensing data, SEBS is based on land surface energy balance theory combined with the in-situ meteorological data or the product of atmospheric numerical model to estimate land surface turbulent flux and the relative evaporation at different scales. SEBS was served as the core methodology of this paper and was used for evaporation estimation. On the basis of hydro-geological data and NOAA satellite data, the SEBS was used in this paper for the estimation of actual evaporation of Taiyuan basin. The spatial distribution of the evaporative fraction and daily evaporation over the basin area was shown. On the other hand, the difference of land surface parameters and evaporation for various target types in the basin area was discussed

    BRDFs acquired by directional radiative measurements during EAGLE and AGRISAR

    Radiation is the driving force for all processes and interactions between earth surface and atmosphere. The amount of measured radiation reflected by vegetation depends on its structure, the viewing angle and the solar angle. This angular dependence is usually expressed in the Bi-directional Reflectance Distribution Function (BRDF). This BRDF is not only different for different types of vegetation, but also different for different stages of the growth. The BRDF therefore has to be measured at ground level before any satellite imagery can be used the calculate surface-atmosphere interaction. The objective of this research is to acquire the BRDFs for agricultural crop types. A goniometric system is used to acquire the BRDFs. This is a mechanical device capable of a complete hemispherical rotation. The radiative directional measurements are performed with different sensors that can be attached to this system. The BRDFs are calculated from the measured radiation. In the periods 10 June - 18 June 2006 and 2 July - 10 July 2006 directional radiative measurements were performed at three sites: Speulderbos site, in the Netherlands, the Cabauw site, in the Netherlands, and an agricultural test site in Goermin, Germany. The measurements were performed over eight different crops: forest, grass, pine tree, corn, wheat, sugar beat and barley. The sensors covered the spectrum from the optical to the thermal domain. The measured radiance is used to calculate the BRDFs or directional thermal signature. This contribution describes the measurements and calculation of the BRDFs of forest, grassland, young corn, mature corn, wheat, sugar beat and barley during the EAGLE2006 and AGRISAR 2006 fieldcampaigns.
