    Curcumin inhibits WEHI-3 leukemia cells in BALB/c mice in vivo

    [[abstract]]Curcumin (1,7-bis(4-hydroxy-3-methoxyphenyl)-1,6-heptadiene-3,5-dione), a natural polyphenol product of the plant Curcuma longa, exhibited potent inhibitory activities against proliferation, induced cell cycle arrest and exhibited the induction of apoptosis in several tumor cell lines. In our previous studies, we have shown that curcumin induced cell cycle arrest and apoptosis on human leukemia HL-60 and mouse leukemia WEHI-3 cells; there are no reports regarding whether or not it affects leukemia cells in vivo. In the present study, we investigated the effects of curcumin on WEHI-3 in BALB/c mice and the results indicated that curcumin reduces the percentage of Mac-3 marker, which is the precursor of macrophage. Curcumin induced significant effects on the population of B cells from murine leukemia in vivo. We also investigated the weights of spleen and liver from murine leukemia and the results showed that curcumin reduced the weight of the liver and spleen. From the pathological examinations, the effects of curcumin on the liver and spleen from mice after being injected with WEHI-3 cells were apparent. Both organs were enlarged.     Curcumin Inhibits Human Lung Large Cell Carcinoma Cancer Tumour Growth in a Murine Xenograft Model

    [[abstract]]Curcumin can decrease viable cells through the induction of apoptosis in human lung cancer NCI-H460 cells in vitro. However, there are no reports that curcumin can inhibit cancer cells in vivo. In this study, NCI-H460 lung tumour cells were implanted directly into nude mice and divided randomly into four groups to be treated with vehicle, curcumin (30 mg/kg of body weight), curcumin (45 mg/kg of body weight) and doxorubicin (8 mg/kg of body weight). Each agent was injected once ever), 4 days intraperitoneally (i.p.), with treatment starting 4 weeks after inoculation with the NCI-H460 cells. Treatment with 30 mg/kg an 45 mg/kg of curcumin or with 8 mg/kg of doxorubicin resulted in a reduction in tumour incidence, size and weight compared with the control group.     Post-growth annealing induced change of conductivity in As-doped ZnO grown by radio frequency magnetron sputtering

    Arsenic-doped ZnO films were fabricated by radio frequency magnetron sputtering method at a relatively low substrate temperature of 200 C. Post-growth annealing in air was carried out up to a temperature of 1000 C. The samples were characterized by Hall measurement, positron annihilation spectroscopy (PAS), secondary ion mass spectroscopy (SIMS), and cathodoluminescence (CL). The as-grown sample was of n-type and it converted to p-type material after the 400 C annealing. The resulting hole concentration was found to increase with annealing temperature and reached a maximum of 6 10 17cm -3 at the annealing temperature of 600 C. The origin of the p-type conductivity was consistent with the As Zn(V Zn) 2 shallow acceptor model. Further increasing the annealing temperature would decrease the hole concentration of the samples finally converted the sample back to n-type. With evidence, it was suggested that the removal of the p-type conductivity was due to the dissociation of the As Zn(V Zn) 2 acceptor and the creation of the deep level defect giving rise to the green luminescence. © 2011 American Institute of Physics.published_or_final_versio

    Use Of Chinese Medicine Among Colorectal Cancer Patients: A Nationwide Population-Based Study.

    Background: Traditional Chinese medicine (CM) appears to be used worldwide, especially by cancer patients. The aim of the present study was to explore CM uses and CM non-users by patients with colorectal cancer (CRC).Materials and methods: A retrospective study was conducted using registration and claims data sets for 2007 from the National Health Insurance Research Database. Patients with colorectal cancer were identified from the Registry for Catastrophic illness Patients. Binary logistic regression was used to estimate odds ratios as the measure of association with the use of CM.Results: A total of 61,211 CRC patients diagnosed in 2007 were analysis. Most CM users preferred to visit private clinics (46.9%) with 306,599 visits. In contrast, the majority of CM non-users preferred to visit private hospitals (42.2%) with 538,769 visits. Among all 176,707 cancer-specific CM visit, there were 66.6% visits to CM outpatient department (OPD) of private hospitals, while in 477,612 non-cancer-specific CM visits, 62.0% was for private clinics. The proportion of expenses for diagnostic fees for CM user in CM visits was much less than that for WM visits and CM non-users (US4.6vs.29.3vs.33.5).TheaveragecostforCMuserinCMwaslessthanthatforWMvisitsandCMnon−users(US4.6 vs. 29.3 vs. 33.5). The average cost for CM user in CM was less than that for WM visits and CM non-users (US6.3 vs. 25.9 vs. 30.3). Female patients, younger age, and patients not living in the northern region, with higher EC or more comorbidities were more likely to receive CM treatment.Conclusion: The prevalence and costs of insurance-covered CM among CRC patients were low.     A Categorical Clustering of Publishers for Mobile Performance Marketing

    Mobile marketing is an expanding industry due to the growth of mobile devices (e.g., tablets, smartphones). In this paper, we explore a categorical approach to cluster publishers of a mobile performance market, in which payouts are only issued when there is a conversion (e.g., a sale). As a case study, we analyze recent and real-world data from a global mobile marketing company. Several experiments were held, considering a first internal evaluation stage, using training data, clustering quality metrics and computational effort.     Initial management of potential occult scaphoid fracture in Australasia

    AIM: To characterise current management of adult patients with possible occult scaphoid fracture in Australasian emergency departments. METHODS: Internet-based survey of Directors of Emergency Medicine Training throughout Australasia. Data collected included the most common management used in ED for patients with possible occult scaphoid fracture and whether there was a guideline regarding management of such cases. Data are reported as descriptive statistics. RESULTS: 61 responses were received (response rate 73%). The most common management reported was immobilisation in a backslab (23, 38%) or full cast (19, 32%) with clinical assessment and re-X-ray in 7-10 days. CT scan within 7 days was used by 9 (15%), bone scan within 7 days by 6 (10%) and MRI within 7 days by 3 (5%). Very few sites were using same day/next day CT or MRI. Eighty-three percent of sites reported not having a guideline/protocol for this condition. CONCLUSION: The traditional approach to management of possible occult scaphoid fracture of immobilisation with re-X-ray at 7-10 days remains the most commonly used in Australasia, despite evidence that this is probably over-treatment with significant consequences for patients.     Ultralow Thermal Conductivity, Multiband Electronic Structure and High Thermoelectric Figure of Merit in TlCuSe

    The entanglement of lattice thermal conductivity, electrical conductivity, and Seebeck coefficient complicates the process of optimizing thermoelectric performance in most thermoelectric materials. Semiconductors with ultralow lattice thermal conductivities and high power factors at the same time are scarce but fundamentally interesting and practically important for energy conversion. Herein, an intrinsic p-type semiconductor TlCuSe that has an intrinsically ultralow thermal conductivity (0.25 W m−1 K−1), a high power factor (11.6 ”W cm−1 K−2), and a high figure of merit, ZT (1.9) at 643 K is described. The weak chemical bonds, originating from the filled antibonding orbitals p-d* within the edge-sharing CuSe4 tetrahedra and long TlSe bonds in the PbClF-type structure, in conjunction with the large atomic mass of Tl lead to an ultralow sound velocity. Strong anharmonicity, coming from Tl+ lone-pair electrons, boosts phonon–phonon scattering rates and further suppresses lattice thermal conductivity. The multiband character of the valence band structure contributing to power factor enhancement benefits from the lone-pair electrons of Tl+ as well, which modify the orbital character of the valence bands, and pushes the valence band maximum off the Γ-point, increasing the band degeneracy. The results provide new insight on the rational design of thermoelectric materials

    Desynchronizing effect of high-frequency stimulation in a generic cortical network model

    Transcranial Electrical Stimulation (TCES) and Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) are two different applications of electrical current to the brain used in different areas of medicine. Both have a similar frequency dependence of their efficiency, with the most pronounced effects around 100Hz. We apply superthreshold electrical stimulation, specifically depolarizing DC current, interrupted at different frequencies, to a simple model of a population of cortical neurons which uses phenomenological descriptions of neurons by Izhikevich and synaptic connections on a similar level of sophistication. With this model, we are able to reproduce the optimal desynchronization around 100Hz, as well as to predict the full frequency dependence of the efficiency of desynchronization, and thereby to give a possible explanation for the action mechanism of TCES.Comment: 9 pages, figs included.     VLASSICK: The VLA Sky Survey in the Central Kiloparsec

    At a distance of 8 kpc, the center of our Galaxy is the nearest galactic nucleus, and has been the subject of numerous key projects undertaken by great observatories such as Chandra, Spitzer, and Herschel. However, there are still no surveys of molecular gas properties in the Galactic center with less than 30" (1 pc) resolution. There is also no sensitive polarization survey of this region, despite numerous nonthermal magnetic features apparently unique to the central 300 parsecs. In this paper, we outline the potential the VLASS has to fill this gap. We assess multiple considerations in observing the Galactic center, and recommend a C-band survey with 10 micro-Jy continuum RMS and sensitive to molecular gas with densities greater than 10^4 cm^{-3}, covering 17 square degrees in both DnC and CnB configurations ( resolution ~5"), totaling 750 hours of observing time. Ultimately, we wish to note that the upgraded VLA is not just optimized for fast continuum surveys, but has a powerful correlator capable of simultaneously observing continuum emission and dozens of molecular and recombination lines. This is an enormous strength that should be fully exploited and highlighted by the VLASS, and which is ideally suited for surveying the center of our Galaxy
