    Unconditionally secure quantum key distribution over 50km of standard telecom fibre

    We demonstrate a weak pulse quantum key distribution system using the BB84 protocol which is secure against all individual attacks, including photon number splitting. By carefully controlling the weak pulse intensity we demonstrate the maximum secure bit rate as a function of the fibre length. Unconditionally secure keys can be formed for standard telecom fibres exceeding 50 km in length.Comment: 9 pages 2 figure

    Zusammenfassung: Das Berner Konzept der Bedürfnis- und Motivorientierten Beziehungsgestaltung, gemäß dem sich Therapeuten in ihrem Beziehungverhalten so verhalten, dass die wichtigsten individuellen motivationalen Ziele und Bedürfnisse des Patienten befriedigt werden, hat sich empirisch bewährt, ist aber in der konkreten Umsetzung nicht immer einfach. Ein Therapeut muss in der Lage sein, die wichtigsten motivationalen Ziele des Patienten zu erkennen und sein Verhalten flexibel so zu gestalten, dass er dem Patienten bedürfnisbefriedigende Erfahrungen ermöglichen kann. Es hat sich gezeigt, dass Therapeuten zwar häufig gut über das Konzept Bescheid wissen, in der Bedürfnis- und Motivorientierten Diagnostik und dem konkreten Beziehungsverhalten aber unsicher sind. Es werden deshalb konkrete Handlungsanweisungen für Therapeuten vermittelt, die helfen sollen, das Konzept in der Praxis umzusetze

    Quantum cryptography protocols robust against photon number splitting attacks for weak laser pulses implementations

    We introduce a new class of quantum quantum key distribution protocols, tailored to be robust against photon number splitting (PNS) attacks. We study one of these protocols, which differs from the BB84 only in the classical sifting procedure.     High rate, long-distance quantum key distribution over 250km of ultra low loss fibres

    We present a fully automated quantum key distribution prototype running at 625 MHz clock rate. Taking advantage of ultra low loss fibres and low-noise superconducting detectors, we can distribute 6,000 secret bits per second over 100 km and 15 bits per second over 250km

    How to use the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health as a reference system for comparative evaluation and standardized reporting of rehabilitation interventions

    Rehabilitation aims to optimize functioning of persons experiencing functioning limitations. As such the comparative evaluation of rehabilitation interventions relies on the analysis of the differences between the change in patient functioning after a specific rehabilitation intervention versus the change following another intervention. A robust health information reference system that can facilitate the comparative evaluation of changes in functioning in rehabilitation studies and the standardized reporting of rehabilitation interventions is the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF). The objective of this paper is to present recommendations that Cochrane Rehabilitation could adopt for using the ICF in rehabilitation studies by: 1) defining the functioning categories to be included in a rehabilitation study; 2) specifying selected functioning categories and selecting suitable data collection instruments; 3) examining aspects of functioning that have been documented in a study; 4) reporting functioning data collected with various data collection instruments; and 5) communicating results in an accessible, meaningful and easily understandable way. The authors provide examples of concrete studies that underscore these recommendations, whereby also em-phasizing the need for future research on the implementation of specific recommendations, e.g. in meta-analysis in systematic literature reviews. Furthermore, the paper outlines how the ICF can complement or be integrated in established Cochrane and rehabilitation research structures and methods, e.g. use of standard mean difference to compare cross-study data collected using different measures, in developing core outcome sets for rehabilitation, and the use of the PICO model. © 2019 EDIZIONI MINERVA MEDICA

    Experimental ancilla-assisted qubit transmission against correlated noise using quantum parity checking

    We report the experimental demonstration of a transmission scheme of photonic qubits over unstabilized optical fibers, which has the plug-and-play feature as well as the ability to transmit any state of a qubit, regardless of whether it is known, unknown, or entangled to other systems. A high fidelity to the noiseless quantum channel was achieved by adding an ancilla photon after the signal photon within the correlation time of the fiber noise and by performing quantum parity checking. Simplicity, maintenance-free feature and robustness against path-length mismatches among the nodes make our scheme suitable for multi-user quantum communication networks.Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures; published in New J.     Unusual behaviour of the ferroelectric polarization in PbTiO3_{3}/SrTiO3_{3} superlattices

    Artificial PbTiO3_{3}/SrTiO3_{3} superlattices were constructed using off-axis RF magnetron sputtering. X-ray diffraction and piezoelectric atomic force microscopy were used to study the evolution of the ferroelectric polarization as the ratio of PbTiO3_{3} to SrTiO3_{3} was changed. For PbTiO3_{3} layer thicknesses larger than the 3-unit cells SrTiO3_{3} thickness used in the structure, the polarization is found to be reduced as the PbTiO3_{3} thickness is decreased. This observation confirms the primary role of the depolarization field in the polarization reduction in thin films. For the samples with ratios of PbTiO3_{3} to SrTiO3_{3} of less than one a surprising recovery of ferroelectricity that cannot be explained by electrostatic considerations was observed

    Magnetic Evolution and Temperature Variation in a Coronal Hole

    We have explored the magnetic flux evolution and temperature variation in a coronal-hole region, using Big Bear Solar Observatory (BBSO) deep magnetograms and {\it SOHO}/EIT images observed from 2005 October 10 to 14. For comparison, we also investigated a neighboring quiet region of the Sun. The coronal hole evolved from its mature stage to its disappearance during the observing period. We have obtained the following results: (1) When the coronal hole was well developed on October 10, about 60 % of the magnetic flux was positive. The EUV brightness was 420 counts pixel1^{-1}, and the coronal temperature, estimated from the line ratio of the EIT 195 {\AA} and 171 {\AA} images, was 1.07 MK. (2) On October 14, when the coronal hole had almost disappeared, 51 % of the magnetic flux was positive, the EUV radiance was 530 counts pixel1^{-1}, and the temperature was 1.10 MK. (3) In the neighboring quiet region, the fraction of positive flux varied between 0.49 and 0.47. The EUV brightness displayed an irregular variation, with a mean value of 870 counts pixel1^{-1}. The temperature was almost constant at 1.11 MK during the five-day observation. Our results demonstrate that in a coronal hole less imbalance of the magnetic flux in opposite polarities leads to stronger EUV brightness and higher coronal temperatures
