    Accuracy assessment, using stratified plurality sampling, of portions of a LANDSAT classification of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge Coastal Plain

    An application of a classification accuracy assessment procedure is described for a vegetation and land cover map prepared by digital image processing of LANDSAT multispectral scanner data. A statistical sampling procedure called Stratified Plurality Sampling was used to assess the accuracy of portions of a map of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge coastal plain. Results are tabulated as percent correct classification overall as well as per category with associated confidence intervals. Although values of percent correct were disappointingly low for most categories, the study was useful in highlighting sources of classification error and demonstrating shortcomings of the plurality sampling method

    Parameterization of the Angular Distribution of Gamma Rays Produced by p-p Interaction in Astronomical Environment

    We present the angular distribution of gamma rays produced by proton-proton interactions in parameterized formulae to facilitate calculations in astrophysical environments. The parameterization is derived from Monte Carlo simulations of the up-to-date proton-proton interaction model by Kamae et al. (2005) and its extension by Kamae et al. (2006). This model includes the logarithmically rising inelastic cross section, the diffraction dissociation process and Feynman scaling violation. The extension adds two baryon resonance contributions: one representing the Delta(1232) and the other representing multiple resonances around 1600 MeV/c^2. We demonstrate the use of the formulae by calculating the predicted gamma-ray spectrum for two different cases: the first is a pencil beam of protons following a power law and the second is a fanned proton jet with a Gaussian intensity profile impinging on the surrounding material.     Adopting a recent calculation of the Galactic interstellar radiation field, we calculate the attenuation of the very high energy gamma rays from the Galactic sources. The infra-red radiation background near the Galactic Center is very intense due to the new calculation and our result shows that a cutoff of high energy gamma ray spectrum begins at about 20 TeV and reaches about 10% for 50 TeV gamma rays.Comment: 6 pages, 1 figure, figure is changed, conclusion not change

    The Spectral Variability of Cygnus X-1 at MeV Energies

    In previous work, we have used data from the first three years of the CGRO mission to assemble a broad-band γ\gamma-ray spectrum of the galactic black hole candidate Cygnus X-1. Contemporaneous data from the COMPTEL, OSSE and BATSE experiments on CGRO were selected on the basis of the hard X-ray flux (45--140 keV) as measured by BATSE. This provided a spectrum of Cygnus X-1 in its canonical low X-ray state (as measured at energies below 10 keV), covering the energy range from 50 keV to 5 MeV. Here we report on a comparison of this spectrum to a COMPTEL-OSSE spectrum collected during a high X-ray state of Cygnus X-1 (May, 1996). These data provide evidence for significant spectral variability at energies above 1 MeV. In particular, whereas the hard X-ray flux {\it decreases} during the high X-ray state, the flux at energies above 1 MeV {\it increases}, resulting in a significantly harder high energy spectrum. This behavior is consistent with the general picture of galactic black hole candidates having two distinct spectral forms at soft γ\gamma-ray energies.     The 1979 Southeastern Virginia Urban Plume Study (SEV-UPS): Surface and airborne studies

    The operation of two surface monitoring stations (one in downtown Norfolk, Virginia, one south of the city near the Great Dismal Swamp) and the collection of 40 hours of airborne measurements is described. Surface site measurements of ozone, oxides of nitrogen, sulfur dioxide, temperature, dew point, b sub seat, and condensation nuclei were made. Instrument calibrations, quality assurance audits, and preliminary data analysis in support of the Urban Plume Study were also made. The air pollution problems that were addressed are discussed. Data handling procedures followed for the surface stations are presented. The operation of the aircraft sampling platform is described. Aircraft sampling procedures are discussed. A preliminary descriptive analysis of the aircraft data is given along with data or plots for surface sites, airborne studies, hydrocarbon species, and instrument performance audits. Several of the aircraft flights clearly show the presence of an urban ozone plume downwind of Norfolk in the direction of the mean wind flow

    Giant Molecular Clouds in M33 - I. BIMA All Disk Survey

    We present the first interferometric CO(J=1->0) map of the entire H-alpha disk of M33. The 13" diameter synthesized beam corresponds to a linear resolution of 50 pc, sufficient to distinguish individual giant molecular clouds (GMCs). From these data we generated a catalog of 148 GMCs with an expectation that no more than 15 of the sources are spurious. The catalog is complete down to GMC masses of 1.5 X 10^5 M_sun and contains a total mass of 2.3 X 10^7 M_sun. Single dish observations of CO in selected fields imply that our survey detects ~50% of the CO flux, hence that the total molecular mass of M33 is 4.5 X 10^7 M_sun, approximately 2% of the HI mass. The GMCs in our catalog are confined largely to the central region (R < 4 kpc). They show a remarkable spatial and kinematic correlation with overdense HI filaments; the geometry suggests that the formation of GMCs follows that of the filaments. The GMCs exhibit a mass spectrum dN/dM ~ M^(-2.6 +/- 0.3), considerably steeper than that found in the Milky Way and in the LMC. Combined with the total mass, this steep function implies that the GMCs in M33 form with a characteristic mass of 7 X 10^4 M_sun. More than 2/3 of the GMCs have associated HII regions, implying that the GMCs have a short quiescent period. Our results suggest the rapid assembly of molecular clouds from atomic gas, with prompt onset of massive star formation.Comment: 19 pages, Accepted for Publication in the Astrophysical Journal Supplemen

    INTEGRAL Spectrometer SPI data from the first year of the Galactic Centre Deep Exposure has been analysed for the diffuse continuum from the Galactic ridge. A new catalogue of sources from the INTEGRAL Imager IBIS has been used to account for their contribution to the celestial signal. Apparently diffuse emission is detected at a level ~10% of the total source flux. A comparison of the spectrum of diffuse emission with that from an analysis of IBIS data alone shows that they are consistent.     Discovery of Molecular Gas in the Outflow and Tidal Arms around M82

    We present the first fully sampled map of 12CO (1-0) emission from M82 covering the entire galaxy. Our map contains a 12 x 15 kpc^2 area. We find that extraplanar CO emission, previously reported at short distances above the galactic plane, extends to heights of up to 6 kpc above the disk. Some of this emission is associated with tidal arms seen in HI, implying either that M82 contained substantial amounts of molecular gas in the outer disk, or that molecular gas formed after the tidal features. CO emission along the direction of the outflow extends to distances of 3 kpc above and below the disk. At this distance, the line is shifted in velocity about 100 km/s, and has the same sense as the galactic outflow from the central starburst.
