The Housing Pattern in North Tyneside since 19^5, with special reference to Newcastle upon Tyne. The thesis studies the development of housing, both municipal and owner-occupied in North Tyneside, since the Second World War, concentrating mainly on the period between 1945 and 1968. It examines at a general level the relationships between modern development and pre-existing settlement and reviews some of the implications of future plans for housing. The study concentrates on the types and numbers of houses being provided by each local authority and the land requirements involved. In addition the types of house on the market and their cost are also considered. Special reference is made to Newcastle upon Tyne which is seen as the main influence on the settlement, and therefore of the housing, pattern. In particular the development of municipal housing within its boundaries and immediate vicinity and the consequent migration of owner-occupied housing to the perimeter of the conurbation and beyond the Green Belt is a dominating theme. In addition, special aspects of housing are examined, for example, the nature of overspill as represented by Killingworth Township and of planned growth as illustrated by Cramlington New Town. Tynemouth has been chosen to represent the problems of a coastal dormitory suburb. House-building by the private developer is an important determining factor in the character of the housing pattern. The need to provide more 'executive" housing is becoming increasingly urgent and this is considered in the final chapter which also re-emphasizes that although there is a general migration of private housing and a decentralisation to a lesser degree of municipal housing, Newcastle acts as a magnet and a hub in determining the nature and distribution of housing in North Tyneside

Adaptation and development pathways for different types of farmers

One of the greatest challenges humanity faces is feeding the world's human population in a sustainable, nutritious, equitable and ethical way under a changing climate. Urgent transformations are needed that allow farmers to adapt and develop while also being climate resilient and contributing minimal emissions. This paper identifies several illustrative adaptation and development pathways, recognising the variety of starting points of different types of farmers and the ways their activities intersect with global trends, such as population growth, climate change, rapid urbanisation dietary changes, competing land uses and the emergence of new technologies. The feasibility of some pathways depends on factors such as farm size and land consolidation. For other pathways, particular infrastructure, technology, access to credit and market access or collective action are required. The most viable pathway for some farmers may be to exit agriculture altogether, which itself requires careful management and planning. While technology offers hope and opportunity, as a disruptor, it also risks maladaptations and can create tradeoffs and exacerbate inequalities, especially in the context of an uncertain future. For both the Sustainable Development Goals and the 2015 Paris Agreement to be achieved, a mix of levers that combine policy, technology, education and awareness-raising, dietary shifts and financial/economic mechanisms is required, attending to multiple time dimensions, to assist farmers along different pathways. Vulnerable groups such as women and the youth must not be left behind. Overall, strong good governance is needed at multiple levels, combining top-down and bottom-up processes

Application of satellite remote-sensing data to land selection and management

A pilot project conducted to demonstrate the utility and economy of satellite data in preparing thematic maps of a wilderness area emphasizing those resources of greatest interest to the potential owner is described. Vegetation maps delineating potential commercial timber and maps of suggested mineral prospecting areas of seven scattered regions were prepared by interpretation of LANDSAT images, coupled with a limited amount of ground truth. Images acquired both in winter and summer seasons were registered to township maps and used in making interpretations of the areal extent of commercial timber potentials. The amount of snow cover visible through the forest canopies was found to be a useful indicator of timber potentials. Identification was made of characteristic topographic features which are typical of flood plain deposits or of the well developed trellis drainage patterns which can indicate the strike of structural grain of underlying Cretaceous sedimentary rocks. The presence of igneous and mixed igneous and metamorphic rocks were indicated by combinations of spectral differences and anomalous interruptions of local radial drainage patterns

Effect of Liquefaction on Pile Shaft Friction Capacity

Piled foundations are commonly used worldwide, and observed failures of these foundations during earthquakes has led to active research in this area. However, the way in which piles support axial loads during earthquakes is still not fully understood. In this paper, the results from centrifuge tests are presented which consider how axial loads are carried by piles during earthquake loading. It will be shown that the piles in dry soils mobilise additional shaft friction to carry the seismically induced axial loading. However, in the case of a pile group passing through a liquefiable soil layer and founded in a dense sand layer, the pile group suffered large settlements as it loses the shaft friction in the liquefied layer and attempted to mobilise additional end bearing capacity. Further, with the post-seismic dissipation of pore pressures and the consequent settlement of the soil, the piles register significant down drag forces. This resulted in a reduction of the loads being supported as shaft friction and required further end bearing capacity to be mobilised
