    Modelling mode of trial

    This paper presents a quantitative analysis of data collected from the mode of trial hearing in two English magistrates' courts. A model of the mode of trial procedure is offered that explores the factors that influence the mode of trial decision taken by magistrates. While legal factors such as seriousness of the offence play a part in the process, the mode of trial decision is also shaped by factors such as courtroom culture, the provision of bail and ethnicity. While this study is, in many respects, exploratory, it does point towards the importance of these extra legal factors in the mode of trial decision and indicate future areas for research

    Enhancement of rare-earth--transition-metal exchange interaction in Pr2_{2}Fe17_{17} probed by inelastic neutron scattering

    The fundamental magnetic interactions of Pr2_{2}Fe17_{17} are studied by inelastic neutron scattering and anisotropy field measurements. Data analysis confirms the presence of three magnetically inequivalent sites, and reveals an exceptionally large value of the exchange field. The unexpected importance of JJ-mixing effects in the description of the ground-state properties of Pr2_{2}Fe17_{17} is evidenced, and possible applications of related compounds are envisaged.Comment: 4 RevTeX pages, 4 EPS figures.     Psychometric properties of the Hospital Survey on Patient Safety Culture: findings from the UK

    Background: Patient safety culture is measured using a range of survey tools. Many provide limited data on psychometric properties and few report findings outside of the USA healthcare context. This study reports an assessment of the psychometric properties and suitability of the American Hospital Survey on Patient Safety Culture (HSOPC) for use within the UK. Methods: A questionnaire survey of three hospitals within a large UK Acute NHS Trust. 1,437 questionnaires were completed (37% response rate). Exploratory factor analysis, confirmatory factor analysis, and reliability analyses were carried out to assess the psychometric performance of this survey instrument and explore potential improvements. Results: Reliability analysis of the items within each proposed scale showed that over half failed to achieve satisfactory internal consistency (Cronbach’s Alpha < 0.7). Furthermore, a confirmatory factor analysis carried out on the UK dataset achieved a poor fit when compared to the original American model. An optimal measurement model was then constructed via exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis with split-half sample validation, and consisted of 9 dimensions compared to the original 12 in the American model. Conclusion: This is one of the few studies to provide an evaluation of an American patient safety culture survey using data from the UK. The results indicate that there is need for caution in using the HSOPC survey in the UK and underline the importance of appropriate validation of safety culture surveys before extending their usage to populations outside of the specific geographical and health care contexts in which they were developed

    Gender, Physical Education and Active Lifestyles: New Directions and Challenges - Introduction to Special Issue

    The idea for this Special Issue, ‘Gender, Physical Education and Active Lifestyles: Contemporary Challenges and New Directions’ developed from the interest generated by a one day conference held at Leeds Beckett University in September 2017. The conference marked 25 years since the publication of Sheila Scraton’s ground breaking, feminist analysis of Physical Education. As a pivotal text that has contributed to the growth of gender research within the UK and more broadly, it seemed fitting to mark this occasion. The reach of Sheila’s work was perhaps realised through the delegate body. Early career researchers mingled with established scholars from America, Australia, New Zealand, Europe and the UK. Building on this conference and a wider call for papers, we are delighted to offer two Special Issues of Sport, Education and Society. The first issue engages explicitly with the challenge of theorising and understanding gendered subjectivities and embodiment across a range of contexts. These papers reflect the diversity of theoretical approaches being employed with some drawing on feminist perspectives, and others using Bourdieu, intersectionality, critical whiteness studies, and masculinity studies. The collection of papers in the second issue seek to examine the different ways in which gender becomes implicated in pedagogical relations and practice. These range from accounts of teachers’ struggles to use critical pedagogies to address gender inequities in PE classes, to analyses of the wider pedagogical ‘work’ of the media in constructing understandings about gender, with several papers exploring these two aspects in combination. We hope you enjoy reading the papers across these two Special Issues as much as we have enjoyed the journey as the editorial team. Collectively the papers raise alternative questions and provide new insights into gender and active lifestyles, and importantly, all seek to make a difference in moving towards more equitable physical activity experiences

    Development of a Nanodroplet Formulation for Triggered Release of BIO for Bone Fracture Healing

    Impaired fracture healing impacts patients’ quality of life and imposes a financial burden on healthcare services. Up to 10% of bone fractures result in delayed/non-union fractures, for which new treatments are urgently required. However, systemic delivery of bone anabolic molecules is often sub-optimal and can lead to significant side effects. In this study, we developed ultrasound (US) responsive nano-sized vehicles in the form of perfluorocarbon nanodroplets (NDs), as a means of targeting delivery of drugs to localised tissues. We tested the hypothesis that NDs could stably encapsulate BIO (GSK-3β inhibitor), which could then be released upon US stimulation to activate Wnt signalling and induce ossification. NDs (~280 nm) were prepared from phospholipids and liquid perfluorocarbon and their stability and drug loading was studied by NTA (Nano Tracking Analysis) and HPLC. ND cytotoxicity was assessed in patient-derived bone marrow stromal cells (BMSCs) with Alamar Blue (24 h), and in vitro bioactivity of BIO-NDs was evaluated in a 3T3 Wnt-pathway reporter cell line with luciferase readout. To investigate the acoustic behaviour of NDs, 2% agarose (LM) containing NDs was injected into a bespoke bone fracture model (Sawbones) of various geometries and stimulated by US (1 MHz, 5% duty cycle, 1 MPa, 30 s), allowing the simultaneous capture of optical images and acoustic emissions. Femoral bone hole defects (1–2 mm) were made in WT-MF1 mice (age: 8–12 wks) and DiR-labelled NDs (100 µL, 109 NDs/mL, i.v.) were injected post-fracture to determine biodistribution by IVIS imaging. NDs were stable (4 and 37 °C) and retained >90% BIO until US was applied, which caused ~100% release. ND exposure up to a concentration of 109 NDs/mL showed no cytotoxicity (24 h). BIO-loaded NDs induced Wnt pathway activation in a dose dependent manner. Biodistribution of DiR-NDs in a femoral bone hole defect model in mice demonstrated increased localisation at the fracture site (~2-fold relative to that found in healthy mice or contralateral femurs at 48 h)

    ‘Last goal wins’: re/engaging women of a ‘forgotten’ age through football?

    This paper explores the physical activity experiences of a group of women based in England, and who are over the age of 30. This particular age group represent a ‘forgotten’ age, that is, they are largely ignored in academic scholarship, policy and physical activity provision. The paper explores how this group of women ‘re/engaged’ in physical activity after a sustained period of inactivity. The study is situated in a weekly football initiative (Monday Night Footy) based in the north of England, managed and organised by a group of women for women to train and play five-a-side football. Data were generated through semi-structured interviews and the use of photo-biographical boards with 11 women, all of whom are regular participants to the football sessions. We use a middle ground feminist lens and Archer’s notion of ‘fr/agility’ to help make sense of the women’s experiences. From these women’s stories three key findings emerge: (a) Biographies of (in)activity – the ways in which relationships with physical activity can be characterised by fractures and fissures despite seemingly positive early physical activity experiences; (b) Pathways of re/engagement – the motives and enablers to these women once again participating in physical activity after a sustained absence; and (c) Monday Night Footy as a space for re/engagement – the ways in which this context contributes to these women’s continued involvement in football and broader physical activity. The paper concludes by offering policy makers and physical activity providers some recommendations alongside considerations for future research

    High-performance work practices and employee wellbeing: organizational identification as a mediator

    Aim: The aim of this study was to examine how high-performance work practices affect engagement and workplace bullying, two different aspects of employee wellbeing. Furthermore, the study sought to examine the potential mediating role of organizational identification in these relationships. Method: A two-wave survey study (n = 213) was conducted among psychologists in Finland. Results: The results showed that high-performance work practices (HPWPs) were positively associated with engagement and negatively associated with the risk of workplace bullying. Moreover, organizational identification acted as mediator of the HPWPs-engagement relationship, though alongside the significant indirect effect via organizational identification there was also a significant direct effect of HPWPs on engagement. Discussion: The study adds knowledge to ongoing debates on whether HPWPs support or undermine employee wellbeing. In particular, it extends our understanding of the association between HPWPs and relationship wellbeing, a topic that has so far received scant attention. Furthermore, the study advances our understanding of explanatory mechanisms in the HPWPs-engagement relationship and points to the importance of organizational identification for explaining why HPWPs lead to higher engagement
