    Guarded Optimism, Cynical Fatalism: An Intertextual Analysis of Selected Victorian Novels and their Modernist Reinterpretations

    The Victorian and modern eras are known for being a time of great change. Victorian authors focused their works on the social, political, and religious upheaval that the country was experiencing during the period. They felt a strong sense of pride in their country, and there was always a sense of hope in their writing. These views are what draw the modern author to retell Victorian novels; yet, the modern writer removes the Victorian sense of hope and replaces it with the sense of the disillusionment which engulfed their era. In this paper, I examine the concept of intertextuality, the study of transactions between one work and a subsequent work, and use the theory to compare four sets of Victorian novels and their modern reinterpretation. When addressing the novel pairings, I focus on one central theme important to both novels: mental illness in Jane Eyre, by Charlotte Brontë, and Wide Sargasso Sea, by Jean Rhys; xenophobia in The Coral Island, by R.M. Ballantyne, and Lord of the Flies, by William Golding; domestic servitude in The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, by Robert Louis Stevenson, and Mary Reilly, by Valerie Martin; and women’s rights in Tess of the d’Urbervilles, by Thomas Hardy, and The French Lieutenant’s Woman, John Fowles

    In a sample of individuals with childhood focal epilepsy, children/adolescents with left hemisphere foci outperformed those with right foci on both measures of nonverbal learning. Participants with left foci performed worse than controls on paired associate delayed recall and semantic memory, and they had greater laterality effects in IQ. Participants with right foci performed worse than controls on delayed facial recognition. Both groups displayed reduced focused attention and poor passage retention over time. Although participants with bilateral foci displayed poor learning and lower IQ than controls, they did not have worse impairment than those with a unilateral focus

    Graduate students\u27 teaching experiences improve their methodological research skills

    Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) graduate students are often encouraged to maximize their engagement with supervised research and minimize teaching obligations. However, the process of teaching students engaged in inquiry provides practice in the application of important research skills. Using a performance rubric, we compared the quality of methodological skills demonstrated in written research proposals for two groups of early career graduate students (those with both teaching and research responsibilities and those with only research responsibilities) at the beginning and end of an academic year. After statistically controlling for preexisting differences between groups, students who both taught and conducted research demonstrate significantly greater improvement in their abilities to generate testable hypotheses and design valid experiments. These results indicate that teaching experience can contribute substantially to the improvement of essential research skills

    α1Proteinase Inhibitor Regulates CD4+ Lymphocyte Levels and Is Rate Limiting in HIV-1 Disease

    Background: The regulation of adult stem cell migration through human hematopoietic tissue involves the chemokine CXCL12 (SDF-1) and its receptor CXCR4 (CD184). In addition, human leukocyte elastase (HLE) plays a key role. When HLE is located on the cell surface (HLE CS), it acts not as a proteinase, but as a receptor for a 1proteinase inhibitor (a 1PI, a 1antitrypsin, SerpinA1). Binding of a1PI to HLECS forms a motogenic complex. We previously demonstrated that a1PI deficiency attends HIV-1 disease and that a1PI augmentation produces increased numbers of immunocompetent circulating CD4 + lymphocytes. Herein we investigated the mechanism underlying the a 1PI deficiency that attends HIV-1 infection. Methods and Findings: Active a 1PI in HIV-1 subjects (median 17 mM, n = 35) was significantly below normal (median 36 mM, p,0.001, n = 30). In HIV-1 uninfected subjects, CD4 + lymphocytes were correlated with the combined factors a1PI, HLECS + lymphocytes, and CXCR4 + lymphocytes (r 2 = 0.91, p,0.001, n = 30), but not CXCL12. In contrast, in HIV-1 subjects with.220 CD4 cells/ml, CD4 + lymphocytes were correlated solely with active a 1PI (r 2 =0.93,p,0.0001, n = 26). The monoclonal anti-HIV-1 gp120 antibody 3F5 present in HIV-1 patient blood is shown to bind and inactivate human a 1PI. Chimpanzee a 1PI differs from human a1PI by a single amino acid within the 3F5-binding epitope. Unlike human a1PI, chimpanzee a1PI did not bind 3F5 or become depleted following HIV-1 challenge, consistent with the normal CD4 + lymphocyte levels and benign syndrome of HIV-1 infected chimpanzees. In family therapy mere attendance to the appointments is no guarantee of engaging in the treatment process and as children are not the main initiators of attendance engaging them through the process can be a complex activity for professionals. Through a conversation analysis of naturally occurring family therapy sessions we explore the main discursive strategies that children employ in this context to passively and actively disengage from the therapeutic process and investigate how the therapists manage and attend to this. We note that children competently remove themselves from therapy through passive resistance, active disengagement, and by expressing their autonomy. Analysis reveals that siblings of the constructed ‘problem’ child are given greater liberty in involvement. We conclude by demonstrating how therapists manage the delicate endeavour of including all family members in the process and how engagement and re-engagement are essential for meeting goals and discuss broader implications for healthcare and other settings where children may disengage

    Predictors of sun protection behaviours and sunburn among Australian adolescents

    BACKGROUND: Excessive sun exposure and sunburn increase individuals' risk of skin cancer. It is especially important to prevent sunburn in childhood due to the higher relative risk of skin cancer across the life span compared to risk associated with sunburn episodes experienced later in life. This study examined demographic and attitudinal factors associated with engagement in a range of sun protection behaviours (wearing a hat, wearing protective clothing, staying in the shade, and staying indoors during the middle of the day) and the frequency of sunburn among Western Australian adolescents to provide insights of relevance for future sun protection campaigns. METHODS: Cross-sectional telephone surveys were conducted annually with Western Australians between 2005/06 and 2014/15. The results from 4150 adolescents aged 14-17 years were used to conduct a path analysis of factors predicting various sun protection behaviours and sunburn. RESULTS: Significant primary predictors of the sun protection behaviours included in the study were skin type (sun sensitivity), gender, tanning-related attitudes and behaviours, and perceived relevance of public service advertisements that advocate sun protection. Of the four sun protection behaviours investigated, staying in the shade and staying indoors during the middle of the day were associated with a lower frequency of sunburn. CONCLUSION: There is a particular need to target sun protection messages at adolescent males who are less likely to engage in the most effective sun protection behaviours and demonstrate an increased propensity to experience sunburn. The results suggest that such future sun protection messages should include a focus on the importance of staying in the shade or indoors during periods of high UV radiation to increase awareness of the efficacy of these methods of avoiding skin cancer
