A flow approach to Bartnik's static metric extension conjecture in axisymmetry

We investigate Bartnik's static metric extension conjecture under the additional assumption of axisymmetry of both the given Bartnik data and the desired static extensions. To do so, we suggest a geometric flow approach, coupled to the Weyl-Papapetrou formalism for axisymmetric static solutions to the Einstein vacuum equations. The elliptic Weyl-Papapetrou system becomes a free boundary value problem in our approach. We study this new flow and the coupled flow--free boundary value problem numerically and find axisymmetric static extensions for axisymmetric Bartnik data in many situations, including near round spheres in spatial Schwarzschild of positive mass.Comment: 60 pages, 13 figures. Expanded Section 3.3 to address longtime existence and uniqueness of solutions to the linearised flow equations. To appear in Pure and Applied Mathematics Quarterly, special issue in honour of Robert Bartni

Postfeminist Spectres: What Is Haunting Television Heroines?

    Get PDF
Postfeminism is frequently analyzed and conceptualized as a time or sensibility haunted by the ghost of feminism that it wants to (purports to) relegate to the past. It is also a crucial concept in understanding the ways of portraying and constructing female characters prevalent in the American media. The article considers the hauntings (literal but predominantly fgurative) experienced by selected prominent women protagonists of postfeminist American mid-brow television series of the late 1990s, 2000s and early 2010s, from the ghostly child of Ally McBeal to haunting spaces and times of Sex and the City and Any Day Now, to the multiple familial hauntings of Grey’s Anatomy, to compare the spectres narratives assign to these female protagonists, their signifcations and ways of containing them or exorcizing them within the narrative

A study of the electrolytic reduction of pyrrole

    Get PDF
A review of the chemical literature has shown that electro-organic methods compare favorably with purely chemical methods for certain syntheses belonging to the following general classes of reactions: coupling, oxidation, reactions with halogens, and reductions. Electro-organic methods have been used most successfully in synthesis by reduction. The chief advantage is using electrolytic reduction in preference to a chemical one is that it offers a more exact control of conditions, and consequently should give a higher yield and a purer product. The advantages of the means of reduction suggested an investigation of its use in the synthesis of hydrogenated products of pyrrole, and unsaturated heterocyclic ring compound. Two possible reduction products might results; a 2-5 dihydro pyrrole (pyrroline), and a tetra hydropyrrole (pyrrolidine), both of which are known and have been characterized. They have been produced by chemical and catalytic reduction in low yields from pyrrole. The variable conditions to be studied in this investigation will include composition of the catholyte, cathode material, current density, time of electrolysis and temperature --Introduction, page 1

Choices, affects and trans representation: An analysis of mechanics and gameplay in Tell Me Why

    Get PDF
The article discusses selected aspects of the 2020 game Tell Me Why, focusing on particular gameplay mechanics pertaining to player choices and the manner in which they influence player emotions, as well as on the representation of trans experience in the game. The authors draw both on affect theory and on approaches derived from game studies concerning the presence of emotions in gameplay. In the final part of the text, trans representation in Tell Me Why is analysed and juxtaposed with the readings typically found in the game’s reviews. The article discusses selected aspects of the 2020 game Tell Me Why, focusing on particular gameplay mechanics pertaining to player choices and the manner in which they influence player emotions, as well as on the representation of trans experience in the game. Brazilian bikini brands have a good image either in Europe and United States of America, but little is known about its influence in Brazilian consumers. This study tried to identify what are the main factors that influence the choice of major exported bikini brands by young women. It is also intended to verify if there is a better perceived value concerning to the exported brand. This article is supported by a quantitative exploratory research. A structured questionnaire was developed to obtain data. 179 women between 18 and 35 years old (considered as heavy users) belonging to AB social economic level were surveyed. Women were selected using a non-probabilistic, per convenience method was used. A quantitative analysis using SPSS was done. Main findings include the identification that exported bikini brands influence positively the decision process. The most relevant factors founded were fashion (the most important) followed by design, model and comfort

Grievable Lives during the COVID-19 Pandemic: US-American Television, Melodrama and the Work of Mourning

    Get PDF
The present article applies Judith Butler’s notion of “grievable life” to reflect on the manner in which selected US-American television series engaged in the work of mourning and memorializing the loss of life in the first two years of the COVID-19 pandemic, with the aim of noting which lives were deemed “lose-able or injurable” (Butler, Frames 1), and how precarity of life was reflected by fictional narratives that were conceived and produced during the first waves of the pandemic. The article focuses in particular on the way in which network scripted programming operating within the melodramatic convention, namely This Is Us, Grey’s Anatomy and Station 19, incorporated pandemic storylines and which aspects of pandemic reality were highlighted or, conversely, avoided scrutiny
