Ultrastable reference pulser for high-resolution spectrometers
Solid-state double-pulse generator for a high resolution semiconductor detector meets specific requirements for resolution /0.05 percent/, amplitude range /0.1-13 MeV/, and repetition rate /0.1-1000 pulses per second/. A tag pulse is generated in coincidence with each reference pulse
Test of a Liquid Argon TPC in a magnetic field and investigation of high temperature superconductors in liquid argon and nitrogen
Tests with cosmic ray muons of a small liquid argon time projection chamber
(LAr TPC) in a magnetic field of 0.55 T are described. No effect of the
magnetic field on the imaging properties were observed. In view of a future
large, magnetized LAr TPC, we investigated the possibility to operate a high
temperature superconducting (HTS) solenoid directly in the LAr of the detector.
The critical current of HTS cables in an external magnetic field was
measured at liquid nitrogen and liquid argon temperatures and a small prototype

Anomalously small wave tails in higher dimensions
We consider the late-time tails of spherical waves propagating on
even-dimensional Minkowski spacetime under the influence of a long range radial
potential. We show that in six and higher even dimensions there exist
exceptional potentials for which the tail has an anomalously small amplitude
and fast decay. Along the way we clarify and amend some confounding arguments
and statements in the literature of the subject.Comment: 13 page

Climate Change Geoengineering: Philosophical Perspectives, Legal Issues, and Governance Frameworks
The international community is not taking the action necessary to avert dangerous increases in greenhouse gases. Facing a potentially bleak future, the question that confronts humanity is whether the best of bad alternatives may be to counter global warming through human-engineered climate interventions. In this book, eleven prominent authorities on climate change consider the legal, policy, and philosophical issues presented by geoengineering. The book asks: When, if ever, are decisions to embark on potentially risky climate modification projects justified? If such decisions can be justified, in a world without a central governing authority, who should authorize such projects and by what moral and legal right? If states or private actors undertake geoengineering ventures absent the blessing of the international community, what recourse do the rest of us have
Internal mode mechanism for collective energy transport in extended systems
We study directed energy transport in homogeneous nonlinear extended systems
in the presence of homogeneous ac forces and dissipation. We show that the
mechanism responsible for unidirectional motion of topological excitations is
the coupling of their internal and translation degrees of freedom. Our results
lead to a selection rule for the existence of such motion based on resonances
that explains earlier symmetry analysis of this phenomenon. The direction of
motion is found to depend both on the initial and the relative phases of the
two harmonic drivings, even in the presence of noise.Comment: Final version, to appear in Physical Review Letter
Shot Noise in Linear Macroscopic Resistors
We report on a direct experimental evidence of shot noise in a linear
macroscopic resistor. The origin of the shot noise comes from the fluctuation
of the total number of charge carriers inside the resistor associated with
their diffusive motion under the condition that the dielectric relaxation time
becomes longer than the dynamic transit time. Present results show that neither
potential barriers nor the absence of inelastic scattering are necessary to
observe shot noise in electronic devices.Comment: 10 pages, 5 figure
Rat Poison Kills a Pack of Eastern Coyotes, Canis latrans, in an Urban Area
We document the death of a pack of Eastern Coyotes (Canis latrans) from high levels of brodifacoum, a second generation poison that is the active ingredient in some forms of rat poison (e.g., d-Con®). The Coyotes died within a week of each other during late March/early April 2005. This incident indicates the vulnerability of wild animals to commercial over-the-counter rodenticides
