A numerical method for computing radially symmetric solutions of a dissipative nonlinear modified Klein-Gordon equation
In this paper we develop a finite-difference scheme to approximate radially
symmetric solutions of the initial-value problem with smooth initial conditions
in an open sphere around the origin, where the internal and external damping
coefficients are constant, and the nonlinear term follows a power law. We prove
that our scheme is consistent of second order when the nonlinearity is
identically equal to zero, and provide a necessary condition for it to be
stable order n. Part of our study will be devoted to compare the physical
effects of the damping coefficients
Intra-uterine fetal demise caused by amniotic band syndrome after standard amniocentesis
The amniotic band syndrome represents a prime example of exogenous disruption of an otherwise normal feta I development. It may be a sequel of invasive diagnostic procedures such as amniocentesis or fetal blood sampling. A 38-year-old gravida II, para II delivered a morphologically normal male stillborn at term. The pregnancy history had been unremarkable but for an early 2nd-trimester amniocentesis. Cause of the intra-uterine fetal demise was noted to be an amniotic band constricting the umbilical cord, An amniotic band is a rare but potentially fatal condition which may be induced by, e.g., invasive prenatal procedures. Such bands are not usually diagnosed prenatally; however, selected patients with augmented risk may profit from intensive ultrasound evaluation including Doppler studies. Copyright (C) 2000 S. Sonographic cervical volumetry in higher order multiple gestation
Objective:The aim of this study of multifetal pregnancies was the comparison of three-dimensional (3D) volumetry of the cervix, conventional sonographic cervical length measurement and clinical assessment. Methods 10 mothers were investigated in an observational study between 5/1999 and 9/2000. A total of 34 consecutive 2D-and 3D-transabdominal ultrasound measurements were performed. Results: Volumetry of the cervix was possible in all 34 exams. 2D-cervical length assessment could not be obtained in 6% because the presenting fetal part obstructed the sonographic plane. Both methods allowed equal judgement of the configuration of the cervix. A significant correlation was found between mean 2D-cervical length (28.7 mm, 7.7 SD) and mean cervical volume (30.0 cm(3), 16.0 SD). Parity, subjective preterm labor or need of tocolytics showed no correlation with any biometrical parameter studied. Conclusion: Volumetry was superior for the assessment of cervical biometry and conformation in women when the transabdominal 2D-plane was obstructed. When cervical length was obtainable by a conventional scan, the technically more complex 3D-imaging did not provide further information. Copyright (C) 2001 S. Karger AG, Basel

Toward a taxonomic model of attention in effortful listening
In recent years, there has been increasing interest in studying listening effort. Research on listening effort intersects with the development of active theories of speech perception and contributes to the broader endeavor of understanding speech perception within the context of neuroscientific theories of perception, attention, and effort. Due to the multidisciplinary nature of the problem, researchers vary widely in their precise conceptualization of the catch-all term listening effort. Very recent consensus work stresses the relationship between listening effort and the allocation of cognitive resources, providing a conceptual link to current cognitive neuropsychological theories associating effort with the allocation of selective attention. By linking listening effort to attentional effort, we enable the application of a taxonomy of external and internal attention to the characterization of effortful listening. More specifically, we use a vectorial model to decompose the demand causing listening effort into its mutually orthogonal external and internal components and map the relationship between demanded and exerted effort by means of a resource-limiting term that can represent the influence of motivation as well as vigilance and arousal. Due to its quantitative nature and easy graphical interpretation, this model can be applied to a broad range of problems dealing with listening effort. As such, we conclude that the model provides a good starting point for further research on effortful listening within a more differentiated neuropsychological framework
Four-dimensional light shaping: manipulating ultrafast spatio-temporal foci in space and time
Spectral dispersion of ultrashort pulses allows simultaneous focusing of
light in both space and time creating so-called spatio-temporal foci. Such
space-time coupling may be combined with existing holographic techniques to
give a further dimension of control when generating focal light fields. It is
shown that a phase-only hologram placed in the pupil plane of an objective and
illuminated by a spatially chirped ultrashort pulse can be used to generate
three dimensional arrays of spatio-temporally focused spots. Exploiting the
pulse front tilt generated at focus when applying simultaneous spatial and
temporal focusing (SSTF), it is possible to overlap neighbouring foci in time
to create a smooth intensity distribution. The resulting light field displays a
high level of axial confinement, with experimental demonstrations given through
two-photon microscopy and non-linear laser fabrication of glass
Inspection and lifetime assessment for arch bridges
Arch bridges made from nature stone nowadays are the oldest structures which are still in use on road and railway lines. With an average age of more than hundred years, these structures often are seen as historical important buildings. Most of them had been constructed during the great building period of roads and railways from the 1840ies to 1900. Lots of the considered nature stone bridges are constructed as circle or three center curve, some of them also in a parabolic form or catenaries or cycloide. The height of the apex cover varies in a large range. If masomy was appropriated, usually sand, chalkstone or clay bricks were used. For most bridges no observations of the material parameter are available, as a result the stone and the mortar strengths are unknown. Under the usage of the German railway company, there are more than 8000 arch bridges yet, although at local roads there is an additional unknown
number of them. In Austria, the railway network, especially along the Southern railway line has around 1000 arch bridges in usage. In whole Europe, the stock of masomy railway bridges is estimated with around 70.000. In the course of route expansion plans in the past especially arch bridges have been replaced by new steel or reinforced concrete structures. Considerations of preservation, the budgetary situation of the rail and road operators, as well as a sustainable, resource efficiënt usage of resources and existing infrastructure are motivations to maintain
and - if necessary - toughen up existing arch bridges. Therefore, the issues of sustainability, durability and serviceability become more important
The lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community online: discussions of bullying and self-disclosure in YouTube videos
Computer-mediated communication has become a popular platform for identity construction and experimentation as well as social interaction for those who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender (LGBT). The creation of user-generated videos has allowed content creators to share experiences on LGBT topics. With bullying becoming more common amongst LGBT youth, it is important to obtain a greater understanding of this phenomenon. In our study, we report on the analysis of 151 YouTube videos which were identified as having LGBT- and bullying-related content. The analysis reveals how content creators openly disclose personal information about themselves and their experiences in a non-anonymous rhetoric with an unknown public. These disclosures could indicate a desire to seek friendship, support and provide empathy
MOF-in-COF molecular sieving membrane for selective hydrogen separation
Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are promising materials for advanced molecular-separation membranes, but their wide nanometer-sized pores prevent selective gas separation through molecular sieving. Herein, we propose a MOF-in-COF concept for the confined growth of metal-organic framework (MOFs) inside a supported COF layer to prepare MOF-in-COF membranes. These membranes feature a unique MOF-in-COF micro/nanopore network, presumably due to the formation of MOFs as a pearl string-like chain of unit cells in the 1D channel of 2D COFs. The MOF-in-COF membranes exhibit an excellent hydrogen permeance (>3000 GPU) together with a significant enhancement of separation selectivity of hydrogen over other gases. The superior separation performance for H2/CO2 and H2/CH4 surpasses the Robeson upper bounds, benefiting from the synergy combining precise size sieving and fast molecular transport through the MOF-in-COF channels. The synthesis of different combinations of MOFs and COFs in robust MOF-in-COF membranes demonstrates the versatility of our design strategy
