A Q-Methodology of Preservice Teachers’ Cognition of Digital Literacy: A Philippine Case Study in Resource-Rich and Resource-Limited Settings

    Get PDF
This study aims to determine the existing digital literacy notions of Filipino preservice in two universities: one is a resource-rich context while the other is a resource-limited context. Contexts were determined based on the observed availability of digital tools. Twenty (20) preservice teachers each from two universities were invited for interviews after which they were again requested to arrange statements culled from the interviews. Utilizing the Q-sort methodology, a method that determines the standpoints of participants by their ranking of statements, three dimensions were identified: the portrait of balance, portrait of responsibility and portrait of support. The portraits represent the themes identified after participants determined the ranking of their statements. As evidenced on the results, the pre-service students in the resource-rich context identified themselves with the portrait of support and responsibility while those from the resource-limited context concentrated heavily on the portrait of balance. The differences in the viewpoints identified how the preservice teachers’ access to resources has impacted their cognition of digital literacy

HIV and AIDS in Sierra Leone: A programmatic scenario

    Get PDF
This review is a comprehensive description of the programmatic scenario in Sierra Leone’s fight against HIV/AIDS. It presents a situation analysis for HIV/AIDS infection including a range of prevention and treatment activities. The spread of the infection and disease would have damaging  consequences if not controlled. The country’s experience suggests that there are certain aspects of this development problem which require urgent and adequate attention. Among these are mainstreaming HIV/AIDS  education and developing well coordinated programmes to protect orphans and other vulnerable children. Stigma and discrimination, treatment and the country’s need to find sustainable resources for this complex, multi-faceted development problem which requires both short-term containment actions and long-term broad-based responses are elaborated on and extensively discussed hereunder.Key Words: HIV, Programmatic, Sierra Leon

Health Promotion as Part of a Holistic Approach to Community Mental Health Care in Sierra Leone

    Get PDF
Mental health care in Sierra Leone is deplorable and its service delivery faces immense challenges. Improving mental health care facilities and services and encouraging health care professionals to enter this sector of service is probably plagued by the strong stigma that prevails in society. Reliable quantitative data on mental illness is extremely minimal. There is a dearth and paucity of information required for effective evalutation. Schizophrenia, hypomania and substance abuse seem to lead the charts in terms of diagnosed mental health disorders in Sierra Leone. An overall picture of the country’s mental health care and disease burden is presented herein. Health promotion is suggested as cardinal in a holistic approach to community health care as it represents a comprehensive social and political process; which embraces strategies and actions directed at strengthening the skills of individuals, changing social, environmental and economic conditions. This overview discusses extensively and recommends that there should be a comprehensive reviewKeywords: Health Promotion, Mental Health Care, Sierra Leon

Low Ten-eleven-translocation 2 (tet2) Transcript Level Is Independent Of Tet2 Mutation In Patients With Myeloid Neoplasms

Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico (CNPq)Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado de São Paulo (FAPESP)New sequencing technologies have enabled the identification of mutations in Ten-eleven-translocation 2 (TET2), an enzyme that catalyzes the conversion of 5-methylcytosine into 5-hydroxymethylcytosine (5-hmC) in myeloid neoplasms. We have recently identified reduced TET2 mRNA expression in myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) and acute myeloid leukemia (AML), which is associated with a poor overall survival in MDS. We herein aimed to investigate TET2 mutations and their impact on TET2 expression in a cohort of patients with myeloid neoplasms, including MDS and AML patients. Findings: TET2 mutations were observed in 8 out of 19 patients (42 %) with myeloid neoplasms. The TET2 expression profile was similar between in wild type and in TET2 mutated patients. Conclusion: Our results suggest that TET2 expression is reduced in MDS/AML patients, independently of mutational status.11Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Cientifico e Tecnologico (CNPq)Fundacao de Amparo a Pesquisa do Estado de Sao Paulo (FAPESP) [610021/2009-5, 2011/51959-0, 2011/15905-3, 2012/09982-8]Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico (CNPq)Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado de São Paulo (FAPESP

With the theme, Looking Ahead: People and Projects Shaping the Future, the Fall-Winter 2022-2023 leads with the first in what will be a series of articles about offshore wind development impacting Connecticut. That is followed by the inspiring story of how a dying forest was replanted for climate resilience. Next, a profile of longtime marine educator Tim Visel tells about his lasting impact on Connecticut schools and students. Lastly, the complex challenge of dealing with Contaminants of Emerging Concern is examined, with descriptions of how Sea Grant is involved and the particularly troublesome group of substances called PFAS

Estudio de la respuesta de plantas de pepino (Cucumis Sativbus L. CV). Hyclos) a diferentes relaciones NO3/NH4+

Cucumber plants were hydroponically grown in a greenhouse with four N03-/NH4+ ratios (100/0, 80/20, 60/40 and 30/70), in order to study their tolerance to NH/ supply. Plants grown in 60/40 N03- /NH/ solution displayed higher weight than N03- treated plants. By contrast, plants grown with N03-/NH4+ ratios of 80/20 and 30/70 showed lower growth than plants fed with N03- as the sole source of N. As the proportion of NH4+ in the nutrient solution was increased Ca, Mg, Mn and B in the leaf and Ca and Mg in the root decreased, whereas P, K, and Zn concentrations in the leaf and Fe, B and Zn levels in the root increased. Finally, NH/ supplied in low and high concentrations was harmful to cucumber plants cv.
