    Biological studies on some moorland short-palped craneflies (Tipulidae, Diptera)

    Moorland Tipulidae (in particular, short-palped craneflies with special reference to Tricyphona immaculata) have been studied on the upper Teesdale moor district of Chapel Fell (Ref NY 863349) between September 1992 and August 1993. The lifecycles of a number of short and long-palped craneflies were recorded using a series of pit-fall traps located at fourteen sites previously selected to represent the range of vegetation present at Chapel Fell summit, 630m.Spiracular disc size was measured in five small-palped species and frequency distribution histograms are given showing the presence of four instars in each. Using pit-fall traps Tricyphona immaculata was found to emerge as an adult both in May and September. Through the collection of peat from the field and subsequent extraction of larvae Tricyphona immaculata was found to exist in two groups, one beginning its lifecycle in the spring, the other in the autumn. Laboratory experiments on eggs of Tricyphona immaculata revealed that eggs do not respond differently to long and short- day photoperiod regimes and that egg development was positively related to temperature. Field experiments indicated species-site habitat associations. Larval densities for short- palped species are given along with adult-site occurrence for both long and short-palped species. The two different habitats of Sphagnum and Nardus are shown to maintain different densities of three species of short-palped cranefly. Annual variation in cranefly numbers is discussed in relation to the summer drought of 1992 after which most species showed a decline in number. Egg development in Tipula czezeki was found not to be influenced by short and long-day photoperiod regimes and this finding is compared to the hatching distribution found in Tipula pagana eggs when subjected to similar conditions. A comparative assessment on larval growth showed that the relationship of breadth and length differs between the species studied.     Syntax in experimental literature: a literary linguistic investigation

    This dissertation uses the methods of literary linguistics to investigate experimental uses of literary language. I consider what kinds of formal experimentation are possible with natural language, examine how the unusual forms of experimental literature are interpreted, and ask what these kinds of experimentation show us about the nature of language. To begin with, I will discuss the goals of this study in detail, outlining the theoretical basis for a linguistic study of experimental literature and what may be learned from such a study. Literary linguistics is concerned with understanding how literary texts use language, focusing on formal aspects of literary texts and how they are related to the formal features of language. Language is the medium of literary texts, and the formal aspects of these texts - such as metre or genre - are in part enabled by using this medium. To understand regularities in the formal aspects of literary texts, literary linguistics research explores regularities in linguistic form and the ways in which the literary form exploits linguistic form

    Black Bear Damage to Forest Stands in Western Washington

    Cambium-feeding behavior by black bears (Ursus americanus), or bear damage, is a major reforestation problem in the Pacific Northwest. Historically, studies have measured the cumulative effects of damage over time, but few have viewed damage in the frame of one season. Bear damage occurring in 1996 was surveyed in areas of radio-marked bears in western Washington. Fresh damage occurred on 48% of bear location plots (n = 96). Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii) (69%), western hemlock (Tsuga heterophylla) (19%), and Pacific silverfir (Abies amabilis) (10%) with a mean dbh of 25.1, 29.5, and 30.7cm, respectively, were most frequently damaged. Random plots were surveyed from mid-July to mid-August to measure habitat availability. Stand and site variables were measured on freshly damaged bear location plots, random plots, and non-damaged bear location plots. This study identified several variables that make forest stands vulnerable to bear damage: conifer dbh, conifer density, stand age, and canopy cover. Awareness of such stand characteristics can assist natural resource managers with animal damage prevention and control programs
