    A Simulated Environment for Testing 4D Detect See and Avoid Scenarios for UAVs

    A synthetic environment has been developed which permits the realistic simulation of encounter scenarios of two small aircraft. This may be used to develop and test Detect Sense and Avoid (DSA) strategies for Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs). A novel maneuver has been invented that simplifies the generation of air-to-air encounters. This “Phi Maneuver” guarantees a variety of encounter geometries, and at least one encounter for each pass of the Intruder aircraft through the loiter zone of the Target aircraft. This provides an effect way to test multiple DSA scenarios and generate statistics on the relative merits of a particular DSA method

    Geology of Tindfjallajökull volcano, Iceland

    The geology of Tindfjallajökull volcano, southern Iceland, is presented as a 1:50,000 scale map. Field mapping was carried out with a focus on indicators of past environments. A broad stratocone of interbedded fragmental rocks and lavas was constructed during Tindfjallajökull’s early development. This stratocone has been dissected by glacial erosion and overlain by a variety of mafic to silicic volcanic landforms. Eruption of silicic magma, which probably occurred subglacially, constructed a thick pile of breccia and lava lobes in the summit area. Mafic to intermediate flank eruptions continued through to the end of the last glacial period, producing lavas, hyaloclastite-dominated units and tuyas that preserve evidence of volcano-ice interactions. The Thórsmörk Ignimbrite, a regionally important chronostratigraphic marker, is present on the SE flank of the volcano.     Seeing the Forest and the Trees: Default Local Processing in Individuals with High Autistic Traits Does Not Come at the Expense of Global Attention.

    Atypical sensory perception is one of the most ubiquitous symptoms of autism, including a tendency towards a local-processing bias. We investigated whether local-processing biases were associated with global-processing impairments on a global/local attentional-scope paradigm in conjunction with a composite-face task. Behavioural results were related to individuals\u27 levels of autistic traits, specifically the Attention to Detail subscale of the Autism Quotient, and the Sensory Profile Questionnaire. Individuals showing high rates of Attention to Detail were more susceptible to global attentional-scope manipulations, suggesting that local-processing biases associated with Attention to Detail do not come at the cost of a global-processing deficit, but reflect a difference in default global versus local bias. This relationship operated at the attentional/perceptual level, but not response criterion

    Surgical treatment of skeletal metastases in proximal tibia: a multicenter case series of 74 patients

    Background and purpose - The proximal tibia is a rare site for metastatic bone disease and is a challenging anatomical site to manage due to the proximity to the knee joint and poor soft tissue envelope. We investigated implant survival and complications of different surgical strategies in the treatment of proximal tibia pathological fractures. Patients and methods - The study comprised a 4 medical center, retrospective analysis of 74 patients surgically treated for metastases of the proximal tibia. Patient records were reviewed to identify outcome, incidence, and type of complications as well as contributing factors. Results - Reconstruction techniques comprised cement-augmented osteosynthesis (n = 33), tumor prosthesis (n = 31), and total knee arthroplasty with long cemented stems (n = 10). Overall implant survival was 88% at 6 months and 1 year, and 67% at 3 years. After stratification by technique, the implant survival was 82% and 71% at 1 and 3 years with tumor prosthesis, 100% at 1 and 3 years with total knee arthroplasty, and 91% at 1 year and 47% at 3 years with osteosynthesis. Preoperative radiotherapy decreased implant survival. Complications were observed in 19/74 patients. Treatment complications led to amputation in 5 patients. Interpretation - In this study, the best results were seen with both types of prothesis reconstructions, with good implant survival, when compared with treatment with osteosynthesis. However, patients treated with tumor prosthesis showed an increased incidence of postoperative infection, which resulted in poor implant survival. Osteosynthesis with cement is a good alternative for patients with short expected survival whereas endoprosthetic replacement achieved good medium-term results.Peer reviewe

    Widespread tephra dispersal and ignimbrite emplacement from a subglacial volcano (Torfajökull, Iceland)

    The tephra dispersal mechanisms of rhyolitic glaciovolcanic eruptions are little known, but can be investigated through the correlation of eruptive products across multiple depositional settings. Using geochemistry and geochronology, we correlate a regionally important Pleistocene tephra horizon—the rhyolitic component of North Atlantic Ash Zone II (II-RHY-1)—and the Thórsmörk Ignimbrite with rhyolitic tuyas at Torfajökull volcano, Iceland. The eruption breached an ice mass >400 m thick, leading to the widespread dispersal of II-RHY-1 across the North Atlantic and the Greenland ice sheet. Locally, pyroclastic density currents traveled across the ice surface, depositing the variably welded Thórsmörk Ignimbrite beyond the ice margin and ~30 km from source. The widely dispersed products of this eruption represent a valuable isochronous tie line between terrestrial, marine, and ice-core paleoenvironmental records. Using the tephra horizon, estimates of ice thickness and extent derived from the eruption deposits can be directly linked to the regional climate archive, which records the eruption at the onset of Greenland Stadial 15.2

    A comparative study of WASP-67b and HAT-P-38b from WFC3 data

    Atmospheric temperature and planetary gravity are thought to be the main parameters affecting cloud formation in giant exoplanet atmospheres. Recent attempts to understand cloud formation have explored wide regions of the equilibrium temperature-gravity parameter space. In this study, we instead compare the case of two giant planets with nearly identical equilibrium temperature (TeqT_\mathrm{eq} 1050K\sim 1050 \, \mathrm{K}) and gravity (g10ms1)g \sim 10 \, \mathrm{m \, s}^{-1}). During HSTHST Cycle 23, we collected WFC3/G141 observations of the two planets, WASP-67 b and HAT-P-38 b. HAT-P-38 b, with mass 0.42 MJ_\mathrm{J} and radius 1.4 RJR_\mathrm{J}, exhibits a relatively clear atmosphere with a clear detection of water. We refine the orbital period of this planet with new observations, obtaining P=4.6403294±0.0000055dP = 4.6403294 \pm 0.0000055 \, \mathrm{d}. WASP-67 b, with mass 0.27 MJ_\mathrm{J} and radius 0.83 RJR_\mathrm{J}, shows a more muted water absorption feature than that of HAT-P-38 b, indicating either a higher cloud deck in the atmosphere or a more metal-rich composition. The difference in the spectra supports the hypothesis that giant exoplanet atmospheres carry traces of their formation history. Future observations in the visible and mid-infrared are needed to probe the aerosol properties and constrain the evolutionary scenario of these planets.Comment: 16 pages, 17 figures, 8 tables, accepted for publication in The Astronomical Journa

    Starspot occultations in infrared transit spectroscopy: the case of WASP-52b

    Stellar activity is one of the main obstacles to high-precision exoplanet observations and has motivated extensive studies in detection and characterization problems. Most efforts focused on unocculted starspots in optical transit spectrophotometry, while the impact of starspot crossings is assumed to be negligible in the near-infrared. Here, we present \textit{HST}/WFC3 transit observations of the active star WASP-52, hosting an inflated hot Jupiter, which present a possible starspot occultation signal. By using this data set as a benchmark, we investigated whether the masking of the transit profile distortion or modeling it with both a starspot model and a Gaussian process affects the shape of the transmission spectrum. Different methods produced spectra with the same shape and a robust detection of water vapor, and with 1σ\lesssim 1 \sigma different reference radii for the planet. The solutions of all methods are in agreement and reached a similar level of precision. Our WFC3 light curve of WASP-52b hints that starspot crossings might become more problematic with \textit{JWST}'s higher sensitivity and complete coverage of the transit profile.Comment: 15 pages, 15 figures, 5 tables, data available onlin

    Multiple Soft Tissue Sarcomas in a Single Patient:An International Multicentre Review

    Developing multiple soft tissue sarcomas (STSs) is a rare process, sparsely reported in the literature to date. Little is known about the pattern of disease development or outcomes in these patients. Patients were identified from three tertiary orthopaedic oncology centres in Canada and the UK. Patients who developed multiple extremity STSs were collated retrospectively from prospective oncology databases. A literature review using MEDLINE was also performed. Six patients were identified in the case series from these three institutions, and five studies were identified from the literature review. Overall, 17 patients were identified with a median age of 51 years (range: 19 to 77). The prevalence of this manifestation in STS patients is 1 in 1225. The median disease-free interval between diagnoses was 2.3 years (range: 0 to 19 years). Most patients developed the secondary STS in a metachronous pattern, the remaining, synchronously. The median survival after the first sarcoma was 6 years, and it was 1.6 years after the second sarcoma. The 5-year overall survival rate was 83.3% and 50% following the first and second STS diagnoses, respectively. A diagnosis of two STSs does not confer a worse prognosis than the diagnosis of a single STS. Developing a second STS is a rare event with no identifiable histological pattern of occurrence. Presentation in a metachronous pattern is more common. A high degree of vigilance is required in patients with a previous STS both to detect both local recurrence and to identify new masses remote from the previous STS site.
