Production systems of traditional leafy vegetables: Challenges for research and extension
Traditional leafy vegetables (TLVs) have formed part of rural household food security strategies for generations. The role and production of TLVs (morogo/miroho/imifino)
were determined in three culturally and agro-ecologically diverse rural communities
in South Africa. A questionnaire survey was combined with qualitative methodologies
to access the indigenous or local knowledge associated with the production of these
crops. This paper focuses on factors that are unique to TLV production systems. TLV
production is dominated by women farmers in an attempt to sustain immediate
household food security. The cultural environment within which the women find
themselves, their ability to access needed resources and the use of technical knowledge
(predominantly local knowledge) are interlinked. Research and extension need to
recognize the potential role of TLVs in food security strategies of households and the
influence of the cultural environment on this female dominated production system.
These factors play a significant role in the women\'s ability to produce and maintain

Carbon and nitrogen isotopic ratios of urine and faeces as novel nutritional biomarkers of meat and fish intake
Purpose
Meat and fish consumption are associated with changes in the risk of chronic diseases. Intake is mainly assessed using self-reporting, as no true quantitative nutritional biomarker is available. The measurement of plasma fatty acids, often used as an alternative, is expensive and time-consuming. As meat and fish differ in their stable isotope ratios, δ13C and δ15N have been proposed as biomarkers. However, they have never been investigated in controlled human dietary intervention studies.
Objective
In a short-term feeding study, we investigated the suitability of δ13C and δ15N in blood, urine and faeces as biomarkers of meat and fish intake.
Methods
The dietary intervention study (n = 14) followed a randomised cross-over design with three eight-day dietary periods (meat, fish and half-meat–half-fish). In addition, 4 participants completed a vegetarian control period. At the end of each period, 24-h urine, fasting venous blood and faeces were collected and their δ13C and δ15N analysed.
Results
There was a significant difference between diets in isotope ratios in faeces and urine samples, but not in blood samples (Kruskal–Wallis test, p < 0.0001). In pairwise comparisons, δ13C and δ15N were significantly higher in urine and faecal samples following a fish diet when compared with all other diets, and significantly lower following a vegetarian diet. There was no significant difference in isotope ratio between meat and half-meat–half-fish diets for blood, urine or faecal samples.
Conclusions
The results of this study show that urinary and faecal δ13C and δ15N are suitable candidate biomarkers for short-term meat and fish intake
A linear nonequilibrium thermodynamics approach to optimization of thermoelectric devices
Improvement of thermoelectric systems in terms of performance and range of
applications relies on progress in materials science and optimization of device
operation. In this chapter, we focuse on optimization by taking into account
the interaction of the system with its environment. For this purpose, we
consider the illustrative case of a thermoelectric generator coupled to two
temperature baths via heat exchangers characterized by a thermal resistance,
and we analyze its working conditions. Our main message is that both electrical
and thermal impedance matching conditions must be met for optimal device
performance. Our analysis is fundamentally based on linear nonequilibrium
thermodynamics using the force-flux formalism. An outlook on mesoscopic systems

The six-minute walk test in community dwelling elderly: influence of health status.
BACKGROUND: The 6 minutes walk test (6MWT) is a useful assessment instrument for the exercise capacity of elderly persons. The impact of the health status on the 6MWT-distance in elderly, however, remains unclear, reducing its value in clinical settings. The objective of this study was to investigate to what extent the 6MWT-distance in community dwelling elderly is determined by health conditions. METHODS: One hundred and fifty-six community dwelling elderly people (53 male, 103 female) were assessed for health status and performed the 6MWT. After clinical evaluation, electrocardiography and laboratory examination participants were categorized into a stratified six-level classification system according to their health status, going from A (completely healthy) to D (signs of active disease at the moment of examination). RESULTS: The mean 6MWT-distance was 603 m (SD = 178). The 6MWT-distance decreased significantly with increasing age (ANOVA p = 0.0001) and with worsening health status (ANCOVA, corrected for age p < 0.001). A multiple linear regression model with health status, age and gender as independent variables explained 31% of the 6MWT-distance variability. Anthropometrical measures (stature, weight and BMI) did not significantly improve the prediction model. A significant relationship between 6MWT-distance and stature was only present in category A (completely healthy). CONCLUSIONS: Significant differences in 6MWT-distance are observed according to health status in community-dwelling elderly persons. The proposed health categorizing system for elderly people is able to distinguish persons with lower physical exercise capacity and can be useful when advising physical trainers for seniors
Correlation between 5-fluorouracil metabolism and treatment response in two variants of C26 murine colon carcinoma
Following an i.p. dose of 150 mg x kg(-1) 5-fluorouracil (5-FU), drug uptake and metabolism over a 2-h period were studied by in vivo (19)F magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) for the murine colon carcinoma lines C26-B (5-FU-insensitive; n=11) and C26-10 (5-FU-sensitive; n=15) implanted s.c. in Balb/C mice. Time courses for tumour growth, intracellular levels of FdUMP, thymidylate synthase (TS) activity, and 5-FU in RNA were also determined, and the effects of a 9.5-min period of carbogen breathing, starting 1 min before drug administration, on MRS-detected 5-FU metabolism and tumour growth curves were examined. Both tumour variants generated MRS-detectable 5-FU nucleotides and showed similar initial growth inhibition after treatment. However, the growth rate of C26-B tumours returned to normal, while the sensitive C26-10 tumours, which produced larger fluoronucleotide pools, still showed moderate growth inhibition. Carbogen breathing did not significantly influence 5-FU uptake or fluoronucleotide production but did significantly enhance growth inhibition in C26-10 tumours. While both tumour variants exhibited incorporation of 5-FU into RNA and inhibition of TS via FdUMP, clearance of 5-FU from RNA and recovery of TS activity were greater for the insensitive C26-B line, indicating that these processes, in addition to 5-FU uptake and metabolism, may be important determinants of drug sensitivity and treatment respons

Coordinated optimization of visual cortical maps (I) Symmetry-based analysis
In the primary visual cortex of primates and carnivores, functional
architecture can be characterized by maps of various stimulus features such as
orientation preference (OP), ocular dominance (OD), and spatial frequency. It
is a long-standing question in theoretical neuroscience whether the observed
maps should be interpreted as optima of a specific energy functional that
summarizes the design principles of cortical functional architecture. A
rigorous evaluation of this optimization hypothesis is particularly demanded by
recent evidence that the functional architecture of OP columns precisely
follows species invariant quantitative laws. Because it would be desirable to
infer the form of such an optimization principle from the biological data, the
optimization approach to explain cortical functional architecture raises the
following questions: i) What are the genuine ground states of candidate energy
functionals and how can they be calculated with precision and rigor? ii) How do
differences in candidate optimization principles impact on the predicted map
structure and conversely what can be learned about an hypothetical underlying
optimization principle from observations on map structure? iii) Is there a way
to analyze the coordinated organization of cortical maps predicted by
optimization principles in general? To answer these questions we developed a
general dynamical systems approach to the combined optimization of visual
cortical maps of OP and another scalar feature such as OD or spatial frequency

Terrorism in Australia: factors associated with perceived threat and incident-critical behaviours
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>To help improve incident preparedness this study assessed socio-demographic and socio-economic predictors of perceived risk of terrorism within Australia and willingness to comply with public safety directives during such incidents.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>The terrorism perception question module was incorporated into the New South Wales Population Health Survey and was completed by a representative sample of 2,081 respondents in early 2007. Responses were weighted against the New South Wales population.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Multivariate analyses indicated that those with no formal educational qualifications were significantly more likely (OR = 2.10, 95%CI:1.32–3.35, p < 0.001) to think that a terrorist attack is very or extremely likely to occur in Australia and also more likely (OR = 3.62, 95%CI:2.25–5.83, p < 0.001) to be very or extremely concerned that they or a family member would be directly affected, compared to those with a university-level qualification. Speaking a language other than English at home predicted high concern (very/extremely) that self or family would be directly affected (OR = 3.02, 95%CI:2.02–4.53, p < 0.001) and was the strongest predictor of having made associated changes in living (OR = 3.27, 95%CI:2.17–4.93, p < 0.001). Being female predicted willingness to evacuate from public facilities. Speaking a language other than English at home predicted low willingness to evacuate.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Low education level is a risk factor for high terrorism risk perception and concerns regarding potential impacts. The pattern of concern and response among those of migrant background may reflect secondary social impacts associated with heightened community threat, rather than the direct threat of terrorism itself. These findings highlight the need for terrorism risk communication and related strategies to address the specific concerns of these sub-groups as a critical underpinning of population-level preparedness.</p
