    Editing OWL through generated CNL

Abstract. Traditionally, Controlled Natural Languages (CNLs) are de-signed either to avoid ambiguity for human readers, or to facilitate auto-matic semantic analysis, so that texts can be transcoded to a knowledge representation language. CNLs of the second kind have recently been adapted to the requirements of knowledge formation in OWL for the Semantic Web. We suggest in this paper a variant approach based on automatic generation of texts in CNL (as opposed to automatic analy-sis), and argue that this provides the best of both worlds, allowing us to pursue human readability in addition to a precise mapping from texts to a formal language.

The Economics of Building Life Cycle Costing

If one is to arrive at a true reflection of the investment potential and total cost of a particular real property investment the appraisal method used must be capable of allowing for the following factors which, although by no means complete, incorporates those aspects which are required to give a valid and meaningful assessment of the investment . 1. Comparisons to be made with alternative investment opportunities 2. Limited life of certain components in a building which may have to be repaired or replaced 3. Comparisons to be made with alternative materials and/or forms of construction 4. The total costs and income generated throughout the effective life of the building including residual value at the expiry of the investment 5. The effect of the time value of money and the impact of inflation 6. Income tax implications 7. Adaptation to the individual characteristics of each specific project Life cycle costing which is essentially similar in concept to costs-in-use or terotechnology, is a sophisticated method of appraisal capable of satisfying the abovementioned needs. It could be defined essentially as: A financial appraisal technique which allows valid comparative evaluation of available alternative possibilities based on time-phased costs over a specific investment period in order to arrive at the optimum economic solution. The purpose of this thesis is to examine the economics of buildings with special reference to life cycle costing in order to illustrate how valid comparisons of alternative construction methods or material selection can be achieved with a view to optimizing total costs

Improving the Quality of Electronic Documentation in Critical Care Nursing

Electronic nursing documentation systems can facilitate complete, accurate, timely documentation practices, but without effective policies and procedures in place, a gap in practice exists and quality of care may be impacted. This systematic review of literature examined current evidence regarding electronic nursing documentation quality. General systems theory and the Donabedian model of health care quality provided the framework for the project. Electronic databases PubMed and the Cumulative Index of Nursing and Allied Health were searched for articles addressing electronic nursing documentation practices. The Cochrane systematic review methodology was used to analyze the articles. Articles were excluded if published before 2001 or not in the English language. The search revealed 860 articles of which 35 were included in the final review. Most studies were quasi-experimental involving multiple interventions such as clinical decision support (CDSS), education, and audit and feedback specific documentation foci. The most reported outcomes were an improvement in documentation completeness and correctness. A multifaceted intervention strategy consisting of CDSS, education, and audit and feedback can be used to improve electronic documentation completeness and correctness. Policies and procedures regarding documentation practice should support the intended outcomes. Electronic documentation systems can improve completeness, but care should be taken not to depend on the quantity of documentation alone. Further research may shed light on the importance of concordance or plausibility, and the truth of documentation and ultimately how that can impact social determinates of health and social change
