Livestock Farming in Rural Areas
Serbia has favorable natural conditions for the development of livestock despite the third decade of recording negative trends. Autochthonous breeds are closely connected to geographical and cultural diversity in Serbian rural areas. Unfortunately, number of autochthonous breeds significantly decreased during the last 5 - 6 decades. This is the potential threat for further decrease in production and loss of agro-biodiversity in Serbia. There are 400 - 500 companies in Serbia which are involved in the breeding of rare, autochthonous, domestic animal breeds. According to the 2012 Agricultural Census, total number of cattle in the Republic of Serbia on the family farms had a share of 91.7%. In the last ten years, poultry and pig production is 20% of total number of pigs and 37% of poultry is grown on the farms of legal entities. The paper aims to point out the need for defining measures that should be adopted in the near future (special programs and developing legal, administrative and technical instruments) for preservation and support of the animal resources of Serbia
Taking a Proposal Seriously : Orientations to Agenda and Agency in Support Workers’ Responses to Client Proposals
While joint decision-making is regularly launched by a proposal, it is the recipients’ responses that crucially influence the proposal outcome. This chapter examines how support workers respond to the proposals made by clients during rehabilitation group meetings at the Clubhouse. Drawing on a collection of 180 client-initiated proposal sequences, the paper describes two dilemmas that the support workers face when seeking to take client proposals “seriously.” The first concerns the meeting’s agenda and consists of a tension between providing recognition for the individual client and encouraging collective participation. The second dilemma has to do with agency and consists of a tension between focusing on the client as the originator of the proposal and avoiding treating him or her alone accountable for it. The analysis of these dilemmas contributes to a deeper understanding of group decision-making, in general, while these findings have specific relevance in mental health rehabilitation. While joint decision-making is regularly launched by a proposal, it is the recipients’ responses that crucially influence the proposal outcome. Gemcitabine alters the proteasome composition and immunopeptidome of tumour cells
The antigenic makeup of tumour cells can have a profound effect on the progression of cancer and success of immunotherapies. Therefore, one strategy to improve the efficacy of cancer treatments is to augment the antigens displayed by tumours. The present study explores how the recognition of tumour cells may be altered by non-cytotoxic concentrations of gemcitabine (GEM). Testing a panel of chemotherapeutics in human cancer cell lines in vitro, it was found that GEM increased surface expression of HLA-A,B,C and that underlying this were specific increases in β-2-microglobulin and immunoproteasome subunit proteins. Furthermore, the peptide antigen repertoire displayed on HLA class I was altered, revealing a number of novel antigens, many of which that were derived from proteins involved in the DNA-damage response. Changes in the nature of the peptide antigens eluted from HLA-A,B,C after GEM treatment consisted of amino acid anchor-residue modifications and changes in peptide length which rendered peptides likely to favour alternative HLA-alleles and increased their predicted immunogenicity. Signalling through the MAPK/ERK and NFκB/RelB pathways was associated with these changes. These data may explain observations made in previous in vivo studies, advise as to which antigens should be used in future vaccination protocols and reinforce the idea that chemotherapy and immunotherapy could be used in combination
Body Measures in Endangered Domestic Balkan Donkey Breed
Information regarding morphology of endangered autochthonous donkey breed in Serbia is insufficient. The aim of the study was to establish 18 morphometric values for the Balkan donkey breed and to explore possible age dependence of the parameters tested. In addition, inter-breed similarity of morphometric parameters was assessed by comparing the data obtained for the Balkan donkey with available morphometric measurements of several previously characterized donkey breeds. The study population included 74 donkeys, divided in two age groups (group A ≤ 3 years; group B > 3 years). Significant morphometric differences (p<0.05) in body length, head length, chest circumference and body weight were found between two age groups. Significant differences in morphological parameters were revealed among the Balkan donkey and other donkey breeds (Catalonian, Croatian and Albanian). However, the smallest distance was between the Balkan donkey and Albanian donkeys as demonstrated by the results of cluster analysis. The results of morphometric analyses showed consistency of the obtained values within the breed, and diversity as compared to other donkey breeds, and, thus, could be taken as referent for the Domestic Balkan donkey. The information gained through this comprehensive morphometric characterization of the Balkan donkey breed provides a basis for conservation and development of the breed standard
PrimPol bypasses UV photoproducts during eukaryotic chromosomal DNA replication
DNA damage can stall the DNA replication machinery, leading to genomic instability. Thus, numerous mechanisms exist to complete genome duplication in the absence of a pristine DNA template, but identification of the enzymes involved remains incomplete. Here, we establish that Primase-Polymerase (PrimPol; CCDC111), an archaeal-eukaryotic primase (AEP) in eukaryotic cells, is involved in chromosomal DNA replication. PrimPol is required for replication fork progression on ultraviolet (UV) lightdamaged DNA templates, possibly mediated by its ability to catalyze translesion synthesis (TLS) of these lesions. This PrimPol UV lesion bypass pathway is not epistatic with the Pol h-dependent pathway and, as a consequence, protects xeroderma pigmentosum variant (XP-V) patient cells from UV-induced cytotoxicity. In addition, we establish that PrimPol is also required for efficient replication fork progression during an unperturbed S phase. These and other findings indicate that PrimPol is an important player in replication fork progression in eukaryotic cells
Neurological Complications of Elbow Arthroscopy
Elbow arthroscopy is an increasingly common procedure performed in orthopedic surgery. However, due to the presence of several major neurovascular structures in close proximity to the operative portals, it can have potentially devastating complications. The largest series of elbow arthroscopies to date described a 2.5% rate of post-operative neurological injury. All of these injuries were transient nerve injuries resolved without intervention. A recent report of major nerve injuries after elbow arthroscopy demonstrated that these injuries are likely under-reported in literature. A review of our records from 1998 to 2014 revealed six patients who had undergone elbow arthroscopy and developed neurological injury post-operatively. While complications after elbow arthroscopy are rare, the most common permanent nerve palsy post-operatively is the posterior interosseous nerve (PIN) followed by the ulnar nerve. Because of the surrounding neurovascular structures, familiarity with the normal elbow anatomy and portals will decrease the risk of damage to important structures. The purpose of this chapter is to review important steps in performing elbow arthroscopy with an emphasis on avoiding neurovascular injury. With a sound understanding of the important bony anatomic landmarks, sensory nerves, and neurovascular structures, elbow arthroscopy can provide both diagnostic and therapeutic intervention with little morbidity
Making identity assurance and authentication strength work for federated infrastructures
In both higher Research and Education (R&E) as well as in research-/ e-infrastructures (in short: infrastructures), federated access and single sign-on by way of national federations, operated in most cases by NRENs, are used as a means to provide users with access to a variety of services. Whereas in national federations institutional accounts, e.g. provided by a university, are typically used to access services, many infrastructures also accept other sources of identity: provided by \u27\u27community identity providers\u27\u27, social identity providers, or governmental IDs. In order to assess and communicate the quality of identities being used and authentications being performed, so called Level of Assurance (LoA) frameworks are used. Because sophisticated LoA frameworks like NIST 800-63-3, Kantara IAF 1420 or eIDAS regulation are often considered too complex to be used in R&E scenarios, the REFEDS Assurance Suite, a more lightweight approach, has been developed. To select an appropriate assurance level, Service Providers need to weigh risks and potential harms in relation to the kind of service they offer. However, the management of risks is often implicitly assumed and little or no guidance to determine the appropriate assurance level is given. In this paper, first, common LoA frameworks and their relation to risk management are investigated. Following that, their components are compared against the REFEDS Assurance Suite using a graphical representation. The focus of this paper lies in providing guidance and best practices based on example scenarios for both Service Providers to request the appropriate REFEDS assurance level, as well as for Identity Provider operators on how to implement REFEDS assurance components
Detection and analysis of new psittacine beak and feather disease virus (PBFDv) nucleotide sequences
ΔΕΝ ΥΠΑΡΧΕΙ ΠΕΡΙΛΗΨΗPsittacine beak and feather disease (PBFD) affects a large number of Psittaciformes species. In this study, five White Cockatoo parrots (Cacatua alba) with clinical signs of PBFD were examined. After euthanasia, a full necropsy of parrots was performed and organs with macroscopic changes were sampled for routine histopathological evaluation. To confirm the presence of psittacine beak and feather disease virus (PBFDv), feather samples were analyzed with the PCR method. Sequence analysis of the obtained PCR products indicated their close relationship (99%) to other PBFDv isolates. Six variable nucleotide sites were discovered, two missense and four silent mutations. This paper presents the evidence of new PBFDv sequence in Cockatoo species
