    Karstic sources of water supply for large consumers in Southeastern Europe – sustainability, disputes and advantages

    Southeastern Europe is known worldwide as classic karst terrain. In the Alpine orogenic belt the karstified carbonate rocks are either dominant, as in the Dinarides, or widely distributed, as in the Carpathian-Balkans, Hellenides or Pindes. Concerning karstic groundwater resources, this region is by far the richest in all of Europe. Some areas, such as southern Montenegro, are characterized by an intensive and high precipitation affecting the water balance. In several countries in the region, water supply from karstic aquifers prevails. There are very large cities with populations of over a half million that depend on a water supply from karst aquifers. Among them are five capitals. Tapping large springs is the traditional method of water supply in the region but the main concern is their unstable discharge regime. This is why many aquifer control projects have been prepared or proposed in the region, particularly in the Mediterranean coastal area. Unfortunately, few have been executed and completed. Even some springs have been abandoned and water supply reoriented towards surface waters or alluvial aquifers. In contrast, with the tapping of the large sublacustrine spring Bolje sestre in Montenegro, the largest of the projects concerning regional water supply in karst is currently being implemented. Some 1.5 m 3/s of the water from the Skadar basin will supply the coastal zone. It is expected that this project, essential for the national economy, will be completed in 2011. Some other proposed large projects such as overseas karstic spring water transportation from Albania to Italy are still under evaluation. However, large and rich karstic reservoirs in this part of Europe should remain a reliable source for water supply in the future despite some possible negative impacts of climatic variation. There is, in fact, the prospect of and interest in exporting and supplying water to both neighbouring and remote areas. </span

    Making identity assurance and authentication strength work for federated infrastructures

    In both higher Research and Education (R&E) as well as in research-/ e-infrastructures (in short: infrastructures), federated access and single sign-on by way of national federations, operated in most cases by NRENs, are used as a means to provide users with access to a variety of services. Whereas in national federations institutional accounts, e.g. provided by a university, are typically used to access services, many infrastructures also accept other sources of identity: provided by \u27\u27community identity providers\u27\u27, social identity providers, or governmental IDs. In order to assess and communicate the quality of identities being used and authentications being performed, so called Level of Assurance (LoA) frameworks are used. Because sophisticated LoA frameworks like NIST 800-63-3, Kantara IAF 1420 or eIDAS regulation are often considered too complex to be used in R&E scenarios, the REFEDS Assurance Suite, a more lightweight approach, has been developed. To select an appropriate assurance level, Service Providers need to weigh risks and potential harms in relation to the kind of service they offer. However, the management of risks is often implicitly assumed and little or no guidance to determine the appropriate assurance level is given. In this paper, first, common LoA frameworks and their relation to risk management are investigated. Following that, their components are compared against the REFEDS Assurance Suite using a graphical representation. The focus of this paper lies in providing guidance and best practices based on example scenarios for both Service Providers to request the appropriate REFEDS assurance level, as well as for Identity Provider operators on how to implement REFEDS assurance components

    On the coupling integrals arising in the method of moments formulation of laterally bounded structures

    A generic integral equation and method of moments formulation is presented for laterally bounded stratified media including planar metallization. The main asset of the developed approach is its flexibility, as it encompasses generic lateral boundary conditions and explicitly applies to any linear subsectional basis functions with constant surface divergence. This includes the rooftop functions on rectangular and triangular supports currently proposed in standard method of moment meshers. This approach provides closed expressions for the coupling integrals appearing in the method of moments matrix elements. These formulas are based of Green's functions modal expansions and in the possibility, conclusively demonstrated in this paper to transform the surface integrals into contour integrals allowing an efficient and systematic implementation of the procedure. Full derivations are presented for several lateral boundary conditions, including rectangular and circular metallic cavities and periodic structures. Numerical examples including the analysis of real-life planar boxed circuits are presented. In all cases the obtained results compare favourably with other existing techniques

    Effect of cold start on engine performance and emissions from diesel engines using IMO-Compliant distillate fuels

    © 2019 Elsevier Ltd Emissions from ships at berth are small compared to the total ship emissions; however, they are one of the main contributors to pollutants in the air of densely-populated areas, consequently heavily affecting public health. This is due to auxiliary marine engines being used to generate electric power and steam for heating and providing services. The present study has been conducted on an engine representative of a marine auxiliary, which was a heavy duty, six-cylinder, turbocharged and after-cooled engine with a high pressure common rail injection system. Engine performance and emission characterisations during cold start are the focus of this paper, since cold start is significantly influential. Three tested fuels were used, including the reference diesel and two IMO (International Maritime Organization) compliant spiked fuels. The research engine was operated at a constant speed and 25% load condition after 12 h cooled soak. Results show that during cold start, significant heat generated from combustion is used to heat the engine block, coolant and lubricant. During the first minute, compared to the second minute, emissions of particle number (PN), carbon monoxide (CO), particulate matter (PM), and nitrogen oxides (NOx) were approximately 10, 4, 2 and 1.5 times higher, respectively. The engine control unit (ECU) plays a vital role in reducing engine emissions by changing the engine injection strategy based on the engine coolant temperature. IMO-compliant fuels, which were higher viscosity fuels associated with high sulphur content, resulted in an engine emission increase during cold start. It should be taken into account that auxiliary marine diesel engines, working at partial load conditions during cold start, contribute considerably to emissions in coastal areas. It demonstrates a need to implement practical measures, such as engine pre-heating, to obtain both environmental and public health advantages in coastal areas

    Writing : A Versatile Resource in the Treatment of the Clients’ Proposals

    This chapter investigates how writing serves as a resource in decision-making at the Clubhouse and how writing activities relate to professionals’ responses to clients. The ideology of the Clubhouse is one of interaction, and in accordance with this perspective, support workers and clients should be treated equally in decision-making processes related to the activity of the Clubhouse. However, as demonstrated in previous research, encouraging clients in mental health rehabilitation to participate actively in interaction and decision-making can be difficult. Therefore, support workers carry a substantial responsibility for promoting clients’ participation in interactions; this responsibility is supported by how they respond to clients. The focus in this chapter is on a certain type of participation-encouraging response—that is, a response that promotes the documentation of vaguely expressed ideas in written documents and encourages a dialogue between support workers and Clubhouse clients around the formulations in a text-in-production.This chapter investigates how writing serves as a resource in decision-making at the Clubhouse and how writing activities relate to professionals’ responses to clients.     Impact of blade structural and aerodynamic uncertainties on wind turbine loads

    Offshore wind power has been in the spotlight among renewable energy sources. The current trends of increased power ratings and longer blades come together with the aim to reduce energy costs by design optimisation. The standard approach to deal with uncertainties in wind-turbine design has been by the use of characteristic values and safety factors. This paper focusses on modelling the effect of structural and aerodynamic uncertainties in blades. First, the uncertainties in laminate properties are characterised and propagated in a blade structural model by means of a Monte Carlo simulation. Wind tunnel measurement data are then used to define the variability in lift and drag coefficients for both clean and rough aerofoil behaviour, which is then used to extrapolate rough behaviours throughout the blade. A stochastic spatial interpolation parameter is used to define the evolution of the degradation level. The combined effect and the variance contribution of these two uncertainty sources in turbine loads is finally defined by aeroelastic turbine simulation.     Maternal psychological distress in primary care and association with child behavioural outcomes at age three

    Observational studies indicate children whose mothers have poor mental health are at increased risk of socio-emotional behavioural difficulties, but it is unknown whether these outcomes vary by the mothers’ mental health recognition and treatment status. To examine this question, we analysed linked longitudinal primary care and research data from 1078 women enrolled in the Born in Bradford cohort. A latent class analysis of treatment status and self-reported distress broadly categorised women as (a) not having a common mental disorder (CMD) that persisted through pregnancy and the first 2 years after delivery (N = 756, 70.1 %), (b) treated for CMD (N = 67, 6.2 %), or (c) untreated (N = 255, 23.7 %). Compared to children of mothers without CMD, 3-year-old children with mothers classified as having untreated CMD had higher standardised factor scores on the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (d = 0.32), as did children with mothers classified as having treated CMD (d = 0.27). Results were only slightly attenuated in adjusted analyses. Children of mothers with CMD may be at risk for socio-emotional and behavioural difficulties. The development of effective treatments for CMD needs to be balanced by greater attempts to identify and treat women.     Identification of SOX2 as a novel glioma-associated antigen and potential target for T cell-based immunotherapy

    Prognosis for patients suffering from malignant glioma has not substantially improved. Specific immunotherapy as a novel treatment concept critically depends on target antigens, which are highly overexpressed in the majority of gliomas, but the number of such antigens is still very limited. SOX2 was identified by screening an expression database for transcripts that are overexpressed in malignant glioma, but display minimal expression in normal tissues. Expression of SOX2 mRNA was further investigated in tumour and normal tissues by real-time PCR. Compared to cDNA from pooled normal brain, SOX2 was overexpressed in almost all (9 out of 10) malignant glioma samples, whereas expression in other, non-malignant tissues was almost negligible. SOX2 protein expression in glioma cell lines and tumour tissues was verified by Western blot and immunofluorescence. Immunohistochemistry demonstrated SOX2 protein expression in all malignant glioma tissues investigated ranging from 6 to 66% stained tumour cells. Human leucocyte antigen-A*0201-restricted SOX2-derived peptides were tested for the activation of glioma-reactive CD8+ cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTLs). Specific CTLs were raised against the peptide TLMKKDKYTL and were capable of lysing glioma cells. The abundant and glioma-restricted overexpression of SOX2 and the generation of SOX2-specific and tumour-reactive CTLs may recommend this antigen as target for T-cell-based immunotherapy of glioma
