Air pollution modelling for birth cohorts: a time-space regression model
To investigate air pollution effects during pregnancy or in the first weeks of life, models are needed that capture both the spatial and temporal variability of air pollution exposures.; We developed a time-space exposure model for ambient NO2 concentrations in Bern, Switzerland. We used NO2 data from passive monitoring conducted between 1998 and 2009: 101 rural sites (24,499 biweekly measurements) and 45 urban sites (4350 monthly measurements). We evaluated spatial predictors (land use; roads; traffic; population; annual NO2 from a dispersion model) and temporal predictors (meteorological conditions; NO2 from continuous monitoring station). Separate rural and urban models were developed by multivariable regression techniques. We performed ten-fold internal cross-validation, and an external validation using 57 NO2 passive measurements obtained at study participant's homes.; Traffic related explanatory variables and fixed site NO2 measurements were the most relevant predictors in both models. The coefficient of determination (R(2)) for the log transformed models were 0.63 (rural) and 0.54 (urban); cross-validation R(2)s were unchanged indicating robust coefficient estimates. External validation showed R(2)s of 0.54 (rural) and 0.67 (urban).; This approach is suitable for air pollution exposure prediction in epidemiologic research with time-vulnerable health effects such as those occurring during pregnancy or in the first weeks of life
Simulations of atomic trajectories near a dielectric surface
We present a semiclassical model of an atom moving in the evanescent field of
a microtoroidal resonator. Atoms falling through whispering-gallery modes can
achieve strong, coherent coupling with the cavity at distances of approximately
100 nanometers from the surface; in this regime, surface-induced Casmir-Polder
level shifts become significant for atomic motion and detection. Atomic transit
events detected in recent experiments are analyzed with our simulation, which
is extended to consider atom trapping in the evanescent field of a microtoroid.Comment: 29 pages, 10 figure
Bingo: Adaptivity and Asynchrony in Verifiable Secret Sharing and Distributed Key Generation
We present Bingo, an adaptively secure and optimally resilient packed asynchronous verifiable secret sharing (PAVSS) protocol that allows a dealer to share secrets with a total communication complexity of words, where is the security parameter and is the number of parties. Using Bingo, we obtain an adaptively secure validated asynchronous Byzantine agreement (VABA) protocol that uses expected words and constant expected time, which we in turn use to construct an adaptively secure high-threshold asynchronous distributed key generation (ADKG) protocol that uses expected words and constant expected time. To the best of our knowledge, our ADKG is the first to allow for an adaptive adversary while matching the asymptotic complexity of the best known static ADKGs
UV anti-reflection coatings for use in silicon detector design
We report on the development of coatings for a CCD detector optimized for use
in a fixed dispersion UV spectrograph. Due to the rapidly changing index of
refraction of Si, single layer broadband anti-reflection coatings are not
suitable to increase quantum efficiency at all wavelengths of interest.
Instead, we describe a creative solution that provides excellent performance
over UV wavelengths. We describe progress in the development of a CCD detector
with theoretical quantum efficiencies (QE) of greater than 60% at wavelengths
from 120 to 300nm. This high efficiency may be reached by coating a backside
illuminated, thinned, delta-doped CCD with a series of thin film
anti-reflection coatings. The materials tested include MgF2 (optimized for
highest performance from 120-150nm), SiO2 (150-180nm), Al2O3(180-240nm), MgO
(200-250nm), and HfO2 (240-300nm). A variety of deposition techniques were
tested and a selection of coatings which minimized reflectance on a Si test
wafer were applied to live devices. We also discuss future uses and

Family coordination in families who have a child with autism spectrum disorder
Little is known about the interactions of families where there is a child with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The present study applies the Lausanne Trilogue Play (LTP) to explore both its applicability to this population as well as to assess resources and areas of deficit in these families. The sample consisted of 68 families with a child with ASD, and 43 families with a typically developing (TD) child. With respect to the global score for family coordination there were several negative correlations: the more severe the symptoms (based on the child’s ADOS score), the more family coordination was dysfunctional. This correlation was particularly high when parents had to play together with the child. In the parts in which only one of the parents played actively with the child, while the other was simply present, some families did achieve scores in the functional range, despite the child’s symptom severity. Who Borrows from the Lender of Last Resort? * Itamar Drechsler
Abstract Understanding why banks borrow from the Lender of Last Resort (LOLR) during a financial crisis is crucial to understanding the macroeconomic impact of such largescale interventions. We document a strong divergence among banks' take-up of LOLR assistance during the financial crisis in the euro area, as banks which borrowed heavily also used increasingly risky collateral. We propose four explanations for this divergence: (1) illiquidity, (2) risk-shifting, (3) political economy, and (4) differences in banks' private valuations. We test these explanations using proprietary data on all central bank borrowing and collateral pledged in the euro area from 2008 to 2011, together with holdings data from the European bank stress tests. Our results strongly support the risk-shifting explanation. We find it both in the financially-distressed countries, where illiquidity and political economy are also at work, and in the non-distressed countries, where it appears to be the main driver of differences in bank's behavior
Age of Izu-Bonin-Mariana arc basement
Documenting the early tectonic and magmatic evolution of the Izu–Bonin–Mariana (IBM) arc system in the Western Pacific is critical for understanding the process and cause of subduction initiation along the current convergent margin between the Pacific and Philippine Sea plates. Forearc igneous sections provide firm evidence for seafloor spreading at the time of subduction initiation (52 Ma) and production of “forearc basalt”. Ocean floor drilling (International Ocean Discovery Program Expedition 351) recovered basement-forming, low-Ti tholeiitic basalt crust formed shortly after subduction initiation but distal from the convergent margin (nominally reararc) of the future IBM arc (Amami Sankaku Basin: ASB). Radiometric dating of this basement gives an age range (49.3–46.8 Ma with a weighted average of 48.7 Ma) that overlaps that of basalt in the present-day IBM forearc, but up to 3.3 m.y. younger than the onset of forearc basalt activity. Similarity in age range and geochemical character between the reararc and forearc basalts implies that the ocean crust newly formed by seafloor spreading during subduction initiation extends from fore- to reararc of the present-day IBM arc. Given the age difference between the oldest forearc basalt and the ASB crust, asymmetric spreading caused by ridge migration might have taken place. This scenario for the formation of the ASB implies that the Mesozoic remnant arc terrane of the Daito Ridges comprised the overriding plate at subduction initiation. The juxtaposition of a relatively buoyant remnant arc terrane adjacent to an oceanic plate was more favourable for subduction initiation than would have been the case if both downgoing and overriding plates had been oceanic
In-depth profiling of COVID-19 risk factors and preventive measures in healthcare workers
PURPOSE To determine risk factors for coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in healthcare workers (HCWs), characterize symptoms, and evaluate preventive measures against SARS-CoV-2 spread in hospitals. METHODS In a cross-sectional study conducted between May 27 and August 12, 2020, after the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, we obtained serological, epidemiological, occupational as well as COVID-19-related data at a~quaternary care, multicenter hospital~in Munich, Germany. RESULTS 7554 HCWs participated, 2.2% of whom tested positive for anti-SARS-CoV-2 antibodies. Multivariate analysis revealed increased COVID-19 risk for nurses (3.1% seropositivity, 95% CI 2.5-3.9%, p = 0.012), staff working on COVID-19 units (4.6% seropositivity, 95% CI 3.2-6.5%, p = 0.032), males (2.4% seropositivity, 95% CI 1.8-3.2%, p = 0.019), and HCWs reporting high-risk exposures to infected patients (5.5% seropositivity, 95% CI 4.0-7.5%, p = 0.0022) or outside of work (12.0% seropositivity, 95% CI 8.0-17.4%, p < 0.0001). Smoking was a protective factor (1.1% seropositivity, 95% CI 0.7-1.8% p = 0.00018) and the symptom taste disorder was strongly associated with COVID-19 (29.8% seropositivity, 95% CI 24.3-35.8%, p < 0.0001). An unbiased decision tree identified subgroups with different risk profiles. Working from home as a preventive measure did not protect against SARS-CoV-2 infection. A PCR-testing strategy focused on symptoms and high-risk exposures detected all larger COVID-19 outbreaks. CONCLUSION Awareness of the identified COVID-19 risk factors and successful surveillance strategies are key to protecting HCWs against SARS-CoV-2, especially in settings with limited vaccination capacities or reduced vaccine efficacy
