Lepton-number violation and right-handed neutrinos in Higgs-less effective theories
Following previous work, we identify a symmetry S_nat that generalizes the
concept of custodial symmetry, keeping under control deviations from the
Standard Model (SM). To realize S_nat linearly, the space of gauge fields has
to be extended. Covariant constraints formulated in terms of spurions reduce
S_nat back to SU(2)_L x U(1)_Y. This allows for a covariant introduction of
explicit S_nat-breaking parameters. We assume that S_nat is at play in a theory
of electroweak symmetry-breaking without a light Higgs particle. We describe
some consequences of this assumption, using a non-decoupling effective theory
in which the loop expansion procedure is based on both momentum and spurion
power counting, as in Chiral Perturbation Theory. A hierarchy of lepton-number
violating effects follows. Leading corrections to the SM are non-oblique. The
effective theory includes stable light right-handed neutrinos, with an unbroken
Z_2 symmetry forbidding neutrino Dirac masses. nu_R contribution to dark matter
places bounds on their masses.Comment: Corresponds to published version: added subsection VI-D about

Improvements and future challenges for the research infrastructure in the field “Measuring cognitive ability”
The assessment of cognitive abilities is critical in large-scale survey studies that aim at elucidating the longitudinal interplay between the individual’s cognitive potential and socio-economic variables. The format of such studies calls for assessment methods which can not only be administered economically but also display a high (psychometric) measurement quality. In consideration of recent theoretical and empirical advances in intelligence research, we recommend the implementation of tests drawing on working memory in large-scale survey studies. Working memory is a limited-capacity system for temporary storage and processing of information and currently discussed to be the cognitive key system underlying intellectual abilities. Four types of working memory tests are exemplarily described and critically evaluated with regard to their psychometric quality and the need for further evaluation.cognitive abilities, intelligence, knowledge, information processing, mental speed, working memory

Error enhancement in geomagnetic models derived from scalar data
Models of the main geomagnetic field are generally represented by a scalar potential gamma expanded in a finite number of spherical harmonics. Very accurate observations of F were used, but indications exist that the accuracy of models derived from them is considerably lower. One problem is that F does not always characterize gamma uniquely. It is not clear whether such ambiguity can be encountered in deriving gamma from F in geomagnetic surveys, but there exists a connection, due to the fact that the counterexamples of Backus are related to the dipole field, while the geomagnetic field is dominated by its dipole component. If the models are recovered with a finite error (i.e. they cannot completely fit the data and consequently have a small spurious component), this connection allows the error in certain sequences of harmonic terms in gamma to be enhanced without unduly large effects on the fit of F to the model
The influence of shc proteins on the whole body energetic response to calorie restriction initiated in 3-month-old mice.
There is increasing evidence that Shc proteins play a role in energy metabolism, and we have previously reported that knockdown of Shc proteins influences the energetic response to acute (3 days) calorie restriction (CR) in 18-month-old mice. Whether Shc proteins play a role in the metabolic response to CR in younger mice has yet to be elucidated. Hence, we sought to determine the impact of 3 days and longer term (2 months) CR on energy expenditure (EE) and respiratory quotient (RQ) in 3 month-old Shc knockout (ShcKO) and wild-type (WT) mice. ShcKO mice decreased (P < 0.001) EE normalized for body weight (EEBW) by 3 days of CR, while no such change was observed in WT animals. However, both ShcKO and WT mice decreased (P < 0.001) EEBW at 2 months of CR and there were no differences in body weight between the ShcKO and WT mice at either 3 days or 2 months of CR. Consistent with increased fatty acid oxidation, only ShcKO mice maintained decreased (P < 0.001) 24 h RQ through 2 months of CR, suggesting that they were able to maintain increased fatty acid oxidation for a longer period of time than WT mice. These results indicate that Shc proteins may contribute to some of the acute energetic responses to CR
