    Noncommutative ampleness for multiple divisors

    Get PDF
The twisted homogeneous coordinate ring is one of the basic constructions of the noncommutative projective geometry of Artin, Van den Bergh, and others. Chan generalized this construction to the multi-homogeneous case, using a concept of right ampleness for a finite collection of invertible sheaves and automorphisms of a projective scheme. From this he derives that certain multi-homogeneous rings, such as tensor products of twisted homogeneous coordinate rings, are right noetherian. We show that right and left ampleness are equivalent and that there is a simple criterion for such ampleness. Thus we find under natural hypotheses that multi-homogeneous coordinate rings are noetherian and have integer GK-dimension.Comment: 11 pages, LaTeX, minor corrections, to appear in J. Algebr

The intensity of the ancient lunar field from magnetic studies on lunar samples

Palaeointensity determination on Apollo 11, 16, and 17 rocks have indicated that from 3.9 to 4.0 AE ago the strength of the surface lunar magnetic field was about 1.3 Oe, while there is evidence from younger rocks that a field of about one quarter of this value was present at a later time (3.6 AE)

The N170 event-related potential differentiates congruent and incongruent gaze responses in gaze leading

To facilitate social interactions, humans need to process the responses that other people make to their actions, including eye movements that could establish joint attention. Here, we investigated the neurophysiological correlates of the processing of observed gaze responses following the participants’ own eye movement. These observed gaze responses could either establish, or fail to establish, joint attention. We implemented a gaze leading paradigm in which participants made a saccade from an on-screen face to an object, followed by the on-screen face either making a congruent or incongruent gaze shift. An N170 event-related potential was elicited by the peripherally located gaze shift stimulus. Critically, the N170 was greater for joint attention than non-joint gaze both when task-irrelevant (Experiment 1) and task-relevant (Experiment 2). These data suggest for the first time that the neurocognitive system responsible for structural encoding of face stimuli is affected by the establishment of participant-initiated joint attention

Gas of self-avoiding loops on the brickwork lattice

An exact calculation of the phase diagram for a loop gas model on the brickwork lattice is presented. The model includes a bending energy. In the dense limit, where all the lattice sites are occupied, a phase transition occuring at an asymmetric Lifshitz tricritical point is observed as the temperature associated with the bending energy is varied. Various critical exponents are calculated. At lower densities, two lines of transitions (in the Ising universality class) are observed, terminated by a tricritical point, where there is a change in the modulation of the correlation function. To each tricritical point an associated disorder line is found.Comment: 19 pages, 6 figures. to appear in J. Phys. A : Math. & Ge

Creating Novel Strategies: Understanding Theory Development in Adult Learning

    Get PDF
There are a numerous “theories” associated with adult learning and adult education. However, to date, there is not one single theory that adequately describes adult learning. Rather there are several theories, models, and frameworks used in advancing the ideologies of adult learning and the characteristics of the adult learner. This paper advances and table presentation advances the discussion about the elements of good theory development in the practice of adult education

Please Help Our Own American Indians: Give Them a Chance, They Will Make Good, February 1953

    Get PDF
This statement dated February 1953, by George S. Stephenson, addresses the issue of food availability for Native Americans. In this statement, Stephenson comments on wheat and corn being sold at a fraction of its value or burned as fuel, while tribal members did not have enough food. Stephenson calls on the United States Congress to pass an emergency relief bill to allocate one million bushels of wheat to be distributed to American Indians. There is a handwritten annotation at the top of the statement.
