    Static and Motion-Based Visual Features Used by Airport Tower Controllers: Some Implications for the Design of Remote or Virtual Towers

    Visual motion and other visual cues are used by tower controllers to provide important support for their control tasks at and near airports. These cues are particularly important for anticipated separation. Some of them, which we call visual features, have been identified from structured interviews and discussions with 24 active air traffic controllers or supervisors. The visual information that these features provide has been analyzed with respect to possible ways it could be presented at a remote tower that does not allow a direct view of the airport. Two types of remote towers are possible. One could be based on a plan-view, map-like computer-generated display of the airport and its immediate surroundings. An alternative would present a composite perspective view of the airport and its surroundings, possibly provided by an array of radially mounted cameras positioned at the airport in lieu of a tower. An initial more detailed analyses of one of the specific landing cues identified by the controllers, landing deceleration, is provided as a basis for evaluating how controllers might detect and use it. Understanding other such cues will help identify the information that may be degraded or lost in a remote or virtual tower not located at the airport. Some initial suggestions how some of the lost visual information may be presented in displays are mentioned. Many of the cues considered involve visual motion, though some important static cues are also discussed

    We use a recently proposed staggered difference-in-differences approach to investigate effects of adoption of an online consultation system in English general practice on antibiotic prescribing patterns. The target estimand is the average effect for each group of practices (defined by year of adoption) in each year, which we aggregate across all adopting practices, by group, and by time since adoption. We find strong evidence of a positive effect of adoption on antibiotic prescribing rates, though the magnitude of effect is relatively small. As time since adoption increases, the effect size increases, while effects vary across groups

    Raising the unification scale in supersymmetry

    In the minimal supersymmetric standard model, the three gauge couplings appear to unify at a mass scale near 2×10162 \times 10^{16} GeV. We investigate the possibility that intermediate scale particle thresholds modify the running couplings so as to increase the unification scale. By requiring consistency of this scenario, we derive some constraints on the particle content and locations of the intermediate thresholds. There are remarkably few acceptable solutions with a single cleanly defined intermediate scale far below the unification scale.Comment: 22 pages, macros included.     Augmented Reality (AR) is a technique by which computer generated signals synthesize impressions that are made to coexist with the surrounding real world as perceived by the user. Human smell, taste, touch and hearing can all be augmented, but most commonly AR refers to the human vision being overlaid with information otherwise not readily available to the user. A correct calibration is important on an application level, ensuring that e.g. data labels are presented at correct locations, but also on a system level to enable display techniques such as stereoscopy to function properly [SOURCE]. Thus, vital to AR, calibration methodology is an important research area. While great achievements already have been made, there are some properties in current calibration methods for augmenting vision which do not translate from its traditional use in automated cameras calibration to its use with a human operator. This paper uses a Monte Carlo simulation of a standard direct linear transformation camera calibration to investigate how user introduced head orientation noise affects the parameter estimation during a calibration procedure of an optical see-through head mounted display

    Static Properties of Quark Solitons

    It has been conjectured that at distances smaller than the confinement scale but large enough to allow for nonperturbative effects, QCD is described by an effective SU(Nc×Nf)L×SU(Nc×Nf)RSU(N_c {\times} N_f)_L\times SU(N_c {\times} N_f)_R chiral Lagrangian. The soliton solutions of such a Lagrangian are extended objects with spin 12{1\over 2}. For Nc=3N_c{=}3, Nf=3N_f{=}3 they are triplets of color and flavor and have baryon number 13{1\over3}, to be identified as constituent quarks. We investigate in detail the static properties of such constituent-quark solitons for the simplest case Nf=1,Nc=3N_f{=}1, N_c{=}3. The mass of these objects comes from the energy of the static soliton and from quantum effects, described semiclassically by rotation of collective coordinates around the classical solution. The quantum corrections tend to be large, but can be controlled by exploring the Lagrangian's parameter space so as to maximize the inertia tensor.     AMOD: a morpholino oligonucleotide selection tool

    AMOD is a web-based program that aids in the functional evaluation of nucleotide sequences through sequence characterization and antisense morpholino oligonucleotide (target site) selection. Submitted sequences are analyzed by translation initiation site prediction algorithms and sequence-to-sequence comparisons; results are used to characterize sequence features required for morpholino design. Within a defined subsequence, base composition and homodimerization values are computed for all putative morpholino oligonucleotides. Using these properties, morpholino candidates are selected and compared with genomic and transcriptome databases with the goal to identify target-specific enriched morpholinos. AMOD has been used at the University of Minnesota to design ∼200 morpholinos for a functional genomics screen in zebrafish.     Towards practice-based studies of HRM: an actor-network and communities of practice informed approach

    HRM may have become co-terminus with the new managerialism in the rhetorical orthodoxies of the HRM textbooks and other platforms for its professional claims. However, we have detailed case-study data showing that HR practices can be much more complicated, nuanced and indeed resistive toward management within organizational settings. Our study is based on ethnographic research, informed by actor-network theory and community of practice theory conducted by one of the authors over an 18-month period. Using actor-network theory in a descriptive and critical way, we analyse practices of managerial resistance, enrolment and counter-enrolment through which an unofficial network of managers used a formal HRM practice to successfully counteract the official strategy of the firm, which was to close parts of a production site. As a consequence, this network of middle managers effectively changed top management strategy and did so through official HRM practices, coupled with other actor-network building processes, arguably for the ultimate benefit of the organization, though against the initial views of the top management. The research reported here, may be characterized as a situated study of HRM-in-practice and we draw conclusions which problematize the concept of HRM in contemporary management literature

    In this summary of the considerations of the QCD working group at Snowmass 2001, the roles of quantum chromodynamics in the Standard Model and in the search for new physics are reviewed, with empahsis on frontier areas in the field. We discuss the importance of, and prospects for, precision QCD in perturbative and lattice calculations. We describe new ideas in the analysis of parton distribution functions and jet structure, and review progress in small-xx and in polarization.Comment: Snowmass 2001.
