    The transition to e-books is happening fast and there are many issues to address.  It seems like the e-book juggernaut is moving along like a train with no brakes. The author, a veteran librarian and publisher, shares some of his perspectives on what we need to think about with respect to e-books and how we and our users and organizations will need to adapt and change our understanding of the very concept of a book. Are we entering a period of Frankenbooks where the creation will turn into a monster that destroys both the good and the bad?  Or will the creation ultimately be a positive transformational change, unseen on this scale since the printing press

    Toward assessing farm-based anaerobic digestate public health risks : comparative investigation with slurry, effect of pasteurization treatments, and use of miniature bioreactors as proxies for pathogen spiking trials

    Manure and slurry may contain a range of bacterial, viral, and parasitic pathogens and land application of these organic fertilizers typically occurs without prior treatment. In-situ treatment through farm-based anaerobic digestion (AD) of such organic fertilizers co-digested with food-production wastes is multi-beneficial due to energy recovery, increased farm incomes and noxious gas reduction. Before risk assessment can be carried out at field scale an investigation of the fate of relevant target pathogens during the actual AD process must be undertaken, requiring the development of practical test systems for evaluation of pathogen survival. The present study examines miniature (50 mL) and laboratory (10 L) scale AD systems. Treatments included slurry co-digested with fats, oils, and grease (FOG) under typical operating and pasteurization conditions used in farm-based AD, in batch-fed miniature and laboratory mesophilic (37°C) continuously stirred tank reactors. Biogas production, pH, chemical oxygen demand, volatile solids, and ammonia concentration were measured throughout the trial, as were fecal indicator bacteria (FIB) i.e., total coliforms, Escherichia coli, and Enterococcus species. The miniature and laboratory bioreactors performed similarly in terms of physicochemical parameters and FIB die-off. In the absence of pasteurization, after 28 days, enterococci numbers were below the <1,000 cfu g−1 threshold required for land application, while E. coli was no longer detectable in the digestate. For comparison, FIB survival in slurry was examined and after 60 days of storage, none of the FIB tested was <1,000 cfu g−1, suggesting that slurry would not be considered safe for land application if FIB thresholds required for AD digestate were to be applied. Taken together we demonstrate that (i) miniature-scale bioreactors are valid proxies of farm-based AD to carry out targeted pathogen survival studies and (ii) in situ AD treatment of slurry prior to land application reduces the level of FIB, independently of pasteurization, which in turn might be indicative of a decreased potential pathogen load to the environment and associated public health risks

    Signatures of technetium oxidation states: a new approach

    A general strategy for the determination of Tc oxidation state by new approach involving X-ray absorption near edge spectroscopy (XANES) at the Tc L-3 edge is shown. A comprehensive series of Tc-99 compounds, ranging from oxidation states I to VII, was measured and subsequently simulated within the framework of crystal-field multiplet theory. The observable trends in the absorption edge energy shift in combination with the spectral shape allow for a deeper understanding of complicated Tc coordination chemistry. This approach can be extended to numerous studies of Tc systems as this method is one of the most sensitive methods for accurate Tc oxidation state and ligand characterization

    Cultural associations with red are potent. They include blood and intense passion, injury and death, love and life; and all these are authentic indications of Kieslowski’s themes. Yet in this film the connotations of the colour are not exclusively traditional because the heroine, a model, will have her image displayed on a gigantic scarlet billboard to promote bubble gum. The model’s glamorous, colour-saturated but transient world and the grey existence of an emotionally constipated senex come into contact. The initially hostile contact between this ill-matched pair brings them not into each other’s arms – this is no romantic comedy – but, through discovery of each other’s weaknesses and strengths, to a degree of completion (not perfection) in which conscious and unconscious are better aligned. In part they are moved by synchronicities in which the life of a young advocate begins to echo the judge’s past. Not only this factor (which extends the reach of the drama beyond the odd couple) but the ever present cultural socio-cultural background of advertising and judicial morality generalise the issues of the main protagonists across the European collective. Eventually the unforgettable calamity with which the film ends brings into focus the characteristics of the main protagonists from the entire trilogy that renders them psychologically convincing survivors

    Appropriateness of the 30-day expected mortality metric in palliative radiation treatment: a narrative review

    BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE The 30-day expected mortality rate is frequently used as a metric to determine which patients benefit from palliative radiation treatment (RT). We conducted a narrative review to examine whether its use as a metric might be appropriate for patient selection. METHODS A literature review was conducted to identify relevant studies that highlight the benefits of palliative RT in timely symptom management among patients with a poor performance status, the accuracy of predicting survival near the end of life and ways to speed up the process of RT administration through rapid response clinics. KEY CONTENT AND FINDINGS Several trials have demonstrated substantial response rates for pain and/or bleeding by four weeks and sometimes within the first two weeks after RT. Models of patient survival have limited accuracy, particularly for predicting whether patients will die within the next 30 days. Dedicated Rapid Access Palliative RT (RAPRT) clinics, in which patients are assessed, simulated and treated on the same day, reduce the number of patient visits to the radiation oncology department and hence the burden on the patient as well as costs. CONCLUSIONS Single-fraction palliative RT should be offered to eligible patients if they are able to attend treatment and could potentially benefit from symptom palliation, irrespective of predicted life expectancy. We discourage the routine use of the 30-day mortality as the only metric to decide whether to offer RT. More common implementation of RAPRT clinics could result in a significant benefit for patients of all life expectancies, but particularly those having short ones
