Zeno and Anti Zeno effect for a two level system in a squeezed bath
We discuss the appearance of Zeno (QZE) or anti-Zeno (QAE) effect in an
exponentially decaying system. We consider the quantum dynamics of a
continuously monitored two level system interacting with a squeezed bath. We
find that the behavior of the system depends critically on the way in which the
squeezed bath is prepared. For specific choices of the squeezing phase the
system shows Zeno or anti-Zeno effect in conditions for which it would decay
exponentially if no measurements were done. This result allows for a clear
interpretation in terms of the equivalent spin system interacting with a
fictitious magnetic field.Comment: 18 pages, 7 figures;added references for section 4;changes in the

Rindler Particles and Classical Radiation
We describe the quantum and classical radiation by a uniformly accelerating
point source in terms of the elementary processes of absorption and emission of
Rindler scalar photons of the Fulling-Davies-Unruh bath observed by a
co-accelerating observer. To this end we compute the emission rate by a DeWitt
detector of a Minkowski scalar particle with defined transverse momentum per
unit of proper time of the source and we show that it corresponds to the
induced absorption or spontaneous and induced emission of Rindler photons from
the thermal bath. We then take what could be called the inert limit of the
DeWitt detector by considering the limit of zero gap energy. As suggested by
DeWitt, we identify in this limit the detector with a classical point source
and verify the consistency of our computation with the classical result.
Finally, we study the behavior of the emission rate in D space-time dimensions
in connection with the so called apparent statistics inversion.Comment: 8 pages, 2 figure
Non Abelian BF theories with sources and 2-D gravity
We study the interaction of non-Abelian topological theories defined on
two dimensional manifolds with point sources carrying non-Abelian charges. We
identify the most general solution for the field equations on simply and
multiply connected two-manifolds. Taking the particular choice of the so-called
extended Poincar\'e group as the gauge group we discuss how recent discussions
of two dimensional gravity models do fit in this formalism.Comment: 20 pages, Latex, To appear in Phys Rev D5
A âgreenâ adsorbent: effect of chemical modification of biosorbents on the adsorption of methylene blue and malachite green
Abstract The dyes methylene blue and malachite green were adsorbed onto the as-prepared and chemically-modified biosorbents obtained from the mesocarp of crushed calabash (Lagenaria siceraria). The aim was to investigate the adsorption capacity of the natural biosorbent, neutralized biosorbent (0.1 mol L-1 NaOH, followed by 0.1 mol L-1 HCl), acid biosorbent (0.1 mol L-1 HCl) and basic biosorbent (0.1 mol L-1 NaOH). The maximum adsorption capacities for methylene blue were, in ascending order: 11.37 mg g-1 for acid biomass < 11.87 mg g-1 for basic biomass < 16.55 mg g-1 for neutralized biomass < 18.83 mg g-1 for natural biomass. In ascending order, for malachite green the maximum adsorption capacities were: 12.80 mg g-1 for basic biomass < 13.31 mg g-1 for acid biomass < 18.74 mg g-1 for natural biomass < 19.67 mg g-1 for neutralized biomass. A comparison of the thermodynamic parameters Gibbs free energy, enthalpy and entropy obtained for the natural biosorbent with those obtained for the chemically-modified biosorbents indicated that the chemical modification proposed led to a change in the materials. The removal capacity, the Freundlich isotherms and the pH of the biosorbents underwent changes with the chemical modification carried out, promoting a novel approach for the use of this biosorbent
Reduction of SARS-CoV-2 viral load in saliva after rinsing with mouthwashes containing cetylpyridinium chloride: a randomized clinical study
Background Symptomatic patients with COVID-19 typically have a high SARS-CoV-2 viral load in their saliva. Procedures to reduce the viral load in their oral cavity are important for mitigating the viral transmission. Methods This randomized clinical trial investigated the impact of two mouthwashes (0.075% cetylpyridinium chloride plus 0.28% zinc lactate (CPC+Zn) (n = 32), and 0.075% cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC) (n = 31)) on the viral load of SARS-CoV-2 in saliva when compared to the distilled water negative control (n = 32). Saliva was collected before (T0) and after (5 min, T1; 30 min, T2; and 60 min, T3) the intervention. Viral load in saliva was measured by qRT-PCR assays. The data in both groups was normalized for T0 and Negative Control, resulting in fold change values. Results CPC+Zn oral solution reduced the viral load in saliva by 6.34-fold at T1, 3.6-fold at T2 and 1.9-fold at T3. Rinsing with the CPC mouthwash reduced the viral load in saliva by 2.5-fold at T1, 1.9-fold at T2 and 2.0-fold at T3. Conclusion CPC+Zn mouthwash or with the CPC mouthwash reduced the viral load in saliva of COVID-19 patients immediately after rinsing. These reductions extended up to 60 min
Pan-Eurasian Experiment (PEEX) Program : An Overview of the First 5 Years in Operation and Future Prospects
The Pan-Eurasian Experiment (PEEX) program was initiated as a bottom-up approach by the researchers coming from Finland and Russia in October 2012. The PEEX China kick off meeting was held in November 2013. During its five years in operation, the program has established a governance structure and delivered a science plan for the Northern Eurasian region. PEEX has also introduced a concept design for a modelling platform and ground-based in situ observation systems for detecting land-atmosphere and ocean-atmosphere interactions. Today, PEEX has an extensive researcherâs network representing research communities coming from the Nordic countries, Russia and China. PEEX is currently carrying out its research activities on a project basis, but is looking for more coordinated funding bases, especially in Russia and in China. The near-future challenge in implementing the PEEX research agenda is to achieve a successful integration and identification of the methodological approaches of the socio-economic research to environmental sciences. Here we give insight into these issues and provide an overview on the main tasks for the upcoming years. The Pan-Eurasian Experiment (PEEX) program was initiated as a bottom-up approach by the researchers coming from Finland and Russia in October 2012. Mir-132/212 is required for maturation of binocular matching of orientation preference and depth perception
MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are known to mediate post-transcriptional gene regulation, but their role in postnatal brain development is still poorly explored. We show that the expression of many miRNAs is dramatically regulated during functional maturation of the mouse visual cortex with miR-132/212 family being one of the top upregulated miRNAs. Age-downregulated transcripts are significantly enriched in miR-132/miR-212 putative targets and in genes upregulated in miR-132/212 null mice. At a functional level, miR-132/212 deletion affects development of receptive fields of cortical neurons determining a specific impairment of binocular matching of orientation preference, but leaving orientation and direction selectivity unaltered. This deficit is associated with reduced depth perception in the visual cliff test. Deletion of miR-132/212 from forebrain excitatory neurons replicates the binocular matching deficits. Thus, miR-132/212 family shapes the age-dependent transcriptome of the visual cortex during a specific developmental window resulting in maturation of binocular cortical cells and depth perception
Endovascular strategy or open repair for ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm: one-year outcomes from the IMPROVE randomized trial.
AIMS: To report the longer term outcomes following either a strategy of endovascular repair first or open repair of ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm, which are necessary for both patient and clinical decision-making. METHODS AND RESULTS: This pragmatic multicentre (29 UK and 1 Canada) trial randomized 613 patients with a clinical diagnosis of ruptured aneurysm; 316 to an endovascular first strategy (if aortic morphology is suitable, open repair if not) and 297 to open repair. The principal 1-year outcome was mortality; secondary outcomes were re-interventions, hospital discharge, health-related quality-of-life (QoL) (EQ-5D), costs, Quality-Adjusted-Life-Years (QALYs), and cost-effectiveness [incremental net benefit (INB)]. At 1 year, all-cause mortality was 41.1% for the endovascular strategy group and 45.1% for the open repair group, odds ratio 0.85 [95% confidence interval (CI) 0.62, 1.17], P = 0.325, with similar re-intervention rates in each group. The endovascular strategy group and open repair groups had average total hospital stays of 17 and 26 days, respectively, P < 0.001. Patients surviving rupture had higher average EQ-5D utility scores in the endovascular strategy vs. open repair groups, mean differences 0.087 (95% CI 0.017, 0.158), 0.068 (95% CI -0.004, 0.140) at 3 and 12 months, respectively. There were indications that QALYs were higher and costs lower for the endovascular first strategy, combining to give an INB of ÂŁ3877 (95% CI ÂŁ253, ÂŁ7408) or âŹ4356 (95% CI âŹ284, âŹ8323). CONCLUSION: An endovascular first strategy for management of ruptured aneurysms does not offer a survival benefit over 1 year but offers patients faster discharge with better QoL and is cost-effective.
