    Cross-comparison of MRCGP & MRCP(UK) in a database linkage study of 2,284 candidates taking both examinations: assessment of validity and differential performance by ethnicity.

    MRCGP and MRCP(UK) are the main entry qualifications for UK doctors entering general [family] practice or hospital [internal] medicine. The performance of MRCP(UK) candidates who subsequently take MRCGP allows validation of each assessment. In the UK, underperformance of ethnic minority doctors taking MRCGP has had a high political profile, with a Judicial Review in the High Court in April 2014 for alleged racial discrimination. Although the legal challenge was dismissed, substantial performance differences between white and BME (Black and Minority Ethnic) doctors undoubtedly exist. Understanding ethnic differences can be helped by comparing the performance of doctors who take both MRCGP and MRCP(UK)

    Catalyzed Oxidation of IG-110 Nuclear Graphite by Simulated Fission Products Ag and Pd Nanoparticles

    To evaluate the stability of nuclear materials in high temperature gas reactors under air ingress conditions, catalytic oxidation of IG-110 graphite by two simulated fission products, metallic Pd and Ag, was studied in oxidative atmosphere and at temperatures up to 1000 °C using an integrated furnace, mass spectroscopy and infrared spectroscopy system. Transmission electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction studies show that Pd and Ag nanoparticles were successfully introduced onto powdery IG-110 graphite through an impregnation and subsequent heat-treatment process. The combined mass spectroscopy and infrared spectroscopy methods allow simultaneous analysis of two gaseous products, CO and CO2, and separate measurements of activation energy for their formation reactions. It was found that the introduction of Pd or Ag to IG-110 graphite substantially catalyzed the oxidation of graphite, characteristic of decreased onset temperatures for the oxidation of graphite. Moreover, the catalytic effects by Pd and Ag are considerably different based on measured concentration ratios of CO2 to CO as a function of oxidation temperatures. Ag makes the graphite oxidation commence at approximately 400 °C with CO2 being the dominant product. In contrast, Pd significantly increases the concentration ratio of CO2 to CO at temperatures higher than approximately 690 °C, although it decreases the onset temperature for the oxidation reaction to around 525 °C.     Detection and quantification of black foot and crown and root rot pathogens in grapevine nursery soils in the Western Cape of South Africa

    Black foot disease (BFD) and crown and root rot (CRR) are important soilborne diseases that affect young grapevines in nurseries and vineyards. A 3-year survey (2013–2015) of five open-field grapevine nurseries was conducted in the Western Cape Province of South Africa. The survey involved the isolation of BFD and CRR pathogens from grafted rootstocks (ten plants per nursery, per year) that were rooted in soil for 1 year. In 2013 and 2015, grapevines were sampled, while in 2014, sampling was focused on rotation crops and weeds (ten plants each). The rotation crops included white mustard, lupins, canola, triticale and forage radish. The weed species sampled included Johnson grass, ryegrass, winter grass, Cape marigold and corn spurry. Soil samples from ten sites per nursery were also collected in close proximity to the sampled plants, at depths of 0–30 cm and 30–60 cm (ten samples per depth). Isolations were made from the grapevines, rotation crops and weeds. Pathogen detection and quantification in the soil were determined using quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction technology. The predominant BFD pathogens isolated from grapevines were Campylocarpon fasciculare, Ca. pseudofasciculare and Dactylonectria macrodidyma. The predominant CRR pathogens were Pythium irregulare and Phytopythium vexans. Dactylonectria macrodidyma, D. novozelandica, D. pauciseptata, Py. irregulare, Py. ultimum var. ultimum and Py. heterothallicum were isolated from triticale roots. Dactylonectria spp. were also isolated from corn spurry, while Py. irregulare and Py. ultimum var. ultimum were isolated from numerous weeds and rotation crops. Mean soil DNA concentrations of Ilyonectria and Dactylonectria were from 0.04 to 37.14 pg μL-1, and for Py. irregulare were between 0.01 and 3.77 pg μL-1. The Phytophthora mean soil DNA concentrations ranged from 0.01 to 33.48 pg μL-1. The qPCR protocols successfully detected and quantified BFD and CRR pathogens in grapevine nursery soil. This is the first report of D. pauciseptata and D. alcacerensis in South African grapevine nurseries

    Extracellular compounds produced by fungi associated with Botryosphaeria dieback induce differential defence gene expression patterns and necrosis in Vitis vinifera cv. Chardonnay cells

    Three major grapevine trunk diseases, esca, botryosphaeria dieback and eutypa dieback, pose important economic problems for vineyards worldwide, and currently, no efficient treatment is available to control these diseases. The different fungi associated with grapevine trunk diseases can be isolated in the necrotic wood, but not in the symptomatic leaves. Other factors seem to be responsible for the foliar symptoms and may represent the link between wood and foliar symptoms. One hypothesis is that the extracellular compounds produced by the fungi associated with grapevine trunk diseases are responsible for pathogenicity. In the present work, we used Vitis vinifera cv. Chardonnay cells to test the aggressiveness of total extracellular compounds produced by Diplodia seriata and Neofusicoccum parvum, two causal agents associated with botryosphaeria dieback. Additionally, the toxicity of purified mellein, a characteristic toxin present in the extracellular compounds of Botryosphaeriaceae, was assessed. Our results show that the total extracellular compounds produced by N. parvum induce more necrosis on Chardonnay calli and induce a different defence gene expression pattern than those of D. seriata. Mellein was produced by both fungi in amounts proportional to its aggressiveness. However, when purified mellein was added to the culture medium of calli, only a delayed necrosis and a lower-level expression of defence genes were observed. Extracellular compounds seem to be involved in the pathogenicity of the fungi associated with botryosphaeria dieback. However, the doses of mellein used in this study are 100 times higher than those found in the liquid fungal cultures: therefore, the possible function of this toxin is discussed

    A case study of the patient wait experience in an emergency department with therapy dogs

    The quality of patient healthcare is a growing concern in Canada’s hospital emergency departments (ED) due to increasing wait times and associated adverse outcomes. A developing body of literature indicates that therapy dogs can positively impact the patient experience. In 2016, members of our team partnered with the Royal University Hospital (RUH) in Saskatchewan to become the first ED in Canada to integrate a visiting therapy dog to positively impact the patient wait experience. The aim of this preliminary case study was to examine if and how this unique initiative impacted patients’ feelings during their ED wait. A brief questionnaire was completed with one-hundred and twenty-four patients pre and post-therapy dog visit and a research observer documented the encounters. Quantitative and qualitative analysis of the data revealed that visiting with a therapy dog in the ED appeared to improve patients’ feelings. Specifically, patients’ perceived comfort levels increased and their distress levels decreased, and the encounters were considered by patients to be a welcome distraction from the stressful ED environment. Our team, comprised of clinicians, researchers, therapy dog handlers and patient advocates documented the advantages and challenges of implementing the initiative. The outcomes support further study of patients’ wait time experiences in the ED and the utility of a visiting therapy dog

    Geological time units are the lingua franca of earth sciences: they are a terminological convenience, a vernacular of any geological conversation, and a prerequisite of geo-scientific writing found throughout in earth science dictionaries and textbooks. Time units include terms formalized by stratigraphic committees as well as informal constructs erected ad hoc to communicate more efficiently. With these time terms we partition Earth’s history into utilitarian and intuitively understandable time segments that vary in length over seven orders of magnitude: from the 225-year-long Anthropocene (Crutzen and Stoermer, 2000) to the ,4-billion-year-long Precambrian (e.g., Hicks, 1885; Ball, 1906; formalized by De Villiers, 1969)
