    Iron line emission in X-ray afterglows

    Recent observations of X-ray afterglows reveal the presence of a redshifted Kalpha iron line in emission in four bursts. In GRB 991216, the line was detected by the low energy grating of Chandra, which showed the line to be broad, with a full width of ~15,000 km/s. These observations indicate the presence of a >1 solar mass of iron rich material in the close vicinity of the burst, most likely a supernova remnant. The fact that such strong lines are observed less than a day after the trigger strongly limits the size of the remnant, which must be very compact. If the remnant had the observed velocity since the supernova explosion, its age would be less than a month. In this case nickel and cobalt have not yet decayed into iron.     The ABC of low-frequency quasi-periodic oscillations in Black-Hole Candidates: analogies with Z-sources

    Three main types of low-frequency quasi-periodic oscillations (LFQPOs) have been observed in Black Hole Candidates. We re-analyzed RXTE data of the bright systems XTE J1859+226, XTE J1550-564 and GX 339-4, which show all three of them. We review the main properties of these LFQPOs and show that they follow a well-defined correlation in a fractional rms vs. softness diagram. We show that the frequency behavior through this correlation presents clear analogies with that of Horizontal-, Normal- and Flaring-Branch Oscillations in Z sources, with the inverse of the fractional rms being the equivalent of the curvilinear coordinate Sz through the Z track.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, accepted by ApJ, uses emulateap

    Integrating Superconductive and Optical Circuits

    We have integrated on oxidized silicon wafers superconductive films and Josephson junctions along with sol-gel optical channel waveguides. The fabrication process is carried out in two steps that result to be solid and non-invasive. It is demonstrated that 660 nm light, coupled from an optical fibre into the channel sol-gel waveguide, can be directed toward superconducting tunnel junctions whose current-voltage characteristics are affected by the presence of the radiation. The dependence of the change in the superconducting energy gap under optical pumping is discussed in terms of a non-equilibrium superconductivity model.Comment: Document composed of 7 pages of text and 3 figure

    Los propósitos que dieron marco a la propuesta se vincularon con: El fortalecimiento de los procesos educativos en el sistema Formal, a partir de la gestión de proyectos interinstitucionales ; El reconocimiento de la Alfabetización Científica como instancia democratizadora del conocimiento lo cual permite enlazar el mundo de la ciencia con prácticas, hábitos, lenguajes y producciones sociales ; El desarrollo de estrategias didácticas que orientan hacia la problematización y complejización de los contenidos curriculares. Se utilizó una metodología cualitativa con organización de colectivos docentes. Las conclusiones obtenidas nos permiten manifestar que este trabajo de articulación es altamente significativo; si bien se requiere extender el período de colectivo para fortalecer el intercambio de los diferentes actores y lograr mejores resultados

    A higher Angiogenin expression is associated with a non-nuclear Maspin location in laryngeal carcinoma

    Objectives. In numerous malignancies, angiogenin (ANG) and Maspin are important proangiogenic and antiangiogenic regulators, respectively. The aim of this study was to identify potential relationships between the biological roles of these two proteins in laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma (LSCC). Methods. Immunohistochemical staining for ANG and Maspin was performed on specimens from 76 consecutive LSCC patients treated with surgery alone, considering the subcellular pattern of Maspin expression. Univariate and multivariate statistical models were used for prognostic purposes. Results. On univariate analysis, a different level of ANG expression was seen for patients stratified by subcellular Maspin expression pattern: the mean ANG expression was higher in cases with a nonnuclear MASPIN expression than in those with a nuclear pattern (P=0.002). Disease-free survival (DFS; in months) differed significantly when patients were stratified by N stage (P=0.01). Patients whose Maspin expression was nonnuclear (i.e., it was cytoplasmic or there was none) had a significantly higher recurrence rate (P<0.001), and shorter DFS (P=0.01) than those with a nuclear Maspin pattern. The mean ANG expression was significantly higher in cases with loco-regional recurrent disease (P=0.007); and patients with an ANG expression 655.0% had a significantly shorter DFS than those with an ANG expression <5.0% (P=0.007). On multivariate analysis, ANG expression 655.0% was a significant, independent, negative prognostic factor in terms of DFS (P=0.041). Conclusion. Our results support the hypothesis that a higher ANG expression is associated with a nonnuclear Maspin expression pattern in patients with LSCC. Further studies are needed to clarify the relationship between the ANG and Maspin pathways, and their potential diagnostic and therapeutic role in LSCC

    XMM-Newton and Swift observations of XTE J1743-363

    XTEJ1743-363 is a poorly known hard X-ray transient, that displays short and intense flares similar to those observed from Supergiant Fast X-ray Transients. The probable optical counterpart shows spectral properties similar to those of an M8 III giant, thus suggesting that XTEJ1743-363 belongs to the class of the Symbiotic X-ray Binaries. In this paper we report on the first dedicated monitoring campaign of the source in the soft X-ray range with XMM-Newton and Swift/XRT. T hese observations confirmed the association of XTEJ1743-363 with the previously suggested M8 III giant and the classification of the source as a member of the Symbiotic X-ray binaries. In the soft X-ray domain, XTEJ1743-363 displays a high absorption (~6x10^22 cm^-2 ) and variability on time scales of hundreds to few thousand seconds, typical of wind accreting systems. A relatively faint flare (peak X-ray flux 3x10^-11 erg/cm^2/s) lasting ~4 ks is recorded during the XMM-Newton observation and interpreted in terms of the wind accretion scenario.Comment: Accepted for publication on A&

    The supergiant fast X-ray transients XTE J1739-302 and IGR J08408-4503 in quiescence with XMM-Newton

    Context. Supergiant fast X-ray transients are a subclass of high mass X-ray binaries that host a neutron star accreting mass from the wind of its OB supergiant companion. They are characterized by an extremely pronounced and rapid variability in X-rays, which still lacks an unambiguous interpretation. A number of deep pointed observations with XMM-Newton have been carried out to study the quiescent emission of these sources and gain insight into the mechanism that causes their X-ray variability. Aims. We continued this study by using three XMM-Newton observations of the two supergiant fast X-ray transient prototypes XTEJ1739-302 and IGR J08408-4503 in quiescence. Methods. An in-depth timing and spectral analysis of these data have been carried out. Results. We found that the quiescent emission of these sources is characterized by both complex timing and spectral variability, with multiple small flares occurring sporadically after periods of lower X-ray emission. Some evidence is found in the XMM-Newton spectra of a soft component below ~2 keV, similar to that observed in the two supergiant fast X-ray transients AXJ1845.0-0433 and IGRJ16207-5129 and in many other high mass X-ray binaries. Conclusions.We suggest some possible interpretations of the timing and spectral properties of the quiescent emission of XTEJ1739- 302 and IGR J08408-4503 in the context of the different theoretical models proposed to interpret the behavior of the supergiant fast X-ray transients.Comment: 13 pages, 14 figures.     A broad iron line in the Chandra/HETG spectrum of 4U 1705-44

    We present the results of a Chandra 30 ks observation of the low mass X-ray binary and atoll source 4U 1705-44. Here we concentrate on the study of discrete features in the energy spectrum at energies below 3 keV, as well as on the iron Kalpha line, using the HETG spectrometer on board of the Chandra satellite. Below 3 keV, three narrow emission lines are found at 1.47, 2.0, and 2.6 keV. The 1.47 and 2.6 keV are probably identified with Ly-alpha emission from Mg XII and S XVI, respectively. The identification of the feature at 2.0 keV is uncertain due to the presence of an instrumental feature at the same energy. The iron Kalpha line at ~6.5 keV is found to be intrinsically broad (FWHM ~ 1.2 keV); its width can be explained by reflection from a cold accretion disk extending down to 15 km from the neutron star center or by Compton broadening in the external parts of a hot (~2 keV) Comptonizing corona.
