    A simulation investigation of cockpit display of aircraft traffic during curved, descending, decelerating approaches

    The results of a simulation experiment involving the evaluation of cockpit display of aircraft traffic information are presented. The experiment was conducted using taped time dependent, noninteractive traffic in an approach to landing situation and two levels of pilot control models: 3-D automatic and computer augmented control. The tests involved two cases: the simulation aircraft flew approach paths which (1) followed another aircraft in between two other aircraft, and (2) merged between two other aircraft. Speed control via manual throttles was used in all tests (path stretching was not allowed for maintaining separation between aircraft). The approaches were conducted while the simulation aircraft was conducting a curved, descending, decelerating approach to landing. Performance data sets were examined, and subjective opinions regarding workload were gathered. Traffic positioning was varied to further evaluate the test subjects' monitoring performance

    Dark Halo and Disk Galaxy Scaling Laws in Hierarchical Universes

    We use cosmological N-body/gasdynamical simulations that include star formation and feedback to examine the proposal that scaling laws between the total luminosity, rotation speed, and angular momentum of disk galaxies reflect analogous correlations between the structural parameters of their surrounding dark matter halos. The numerical experiments follow the formation of galaxy-sized halos in two Cold Dark Matter dominated universes: the standard Omega=1 CDM scenario and the currently popular LCDM model. We find that the slope and scatter of the I-band Tully-Fisher relation are well reproduced in the simulations, although not, as proposed in recent work, as a result of the cosmological equivalence between halo mass and circular velocity: large systematic variations in the fraction of baryons that collapse to form galaxies and in the ratio between halo and disk circular velocities are observed in our numerical experiments. The Tully-Fisher slope and scatter are recovered in this model as a direct result of the dynamical response of the halo to the assembly of the luminous component of the galaxy. We conclude that models that neglect the self-gravity of the disk and its influence on the detailed structure of the halo cannot be used to derive meaningful estimates of the scatter or slope of the Tully-Fisher relation. Our models fail, however, to match the zero-point of the Tully-Fisher relation, as well as that of the relation linking disk rotation speed and angular momentum. These failures can be traced, respectively, to the excessive central concentration of dark halos formed in the Cold Dark Matter cosmogonies we explore and to the formation of galaxy disks as the final outcome of a sequence of merger events.     Evaluation of g seat augmentation of fixed-base/moving base simulation for transport landings under two visually imposed runway width conditions

    Vertical-motion cues supplied by a g-seat to augment platform motion cues in the other five degrees of freedom were evaluated in terms of their effect on objective performance measures obtained during simulated transport landings under visual conditions. In addition to evaluating the effects of the vertical cueing, runway width and magnification effects were investigated. The g-seat was evaluated during fixed base and moving-base operations. Although performance with the g-seat only improved slightly over that with fixed-base operation, combined g-seat platform operation showed no improvement over improvement over platform-only operation. When one runway width at one magnification factor was compared with another width at a different factor, the visual results indicated that the runway width probably had no effect on pilot-vehicle performance. The new performance differences that were detected may be more readily attributed to the extant (existing throughout) increase in vertical velocity induced by the magnification factor used to change the runway width, rather than to the width itself

    A method of parameter extraction for stability and control derivatives of aircraft from flight test data, implementing maximum likelihood estimation, has been developed and successfully applied to actual lateral flight test data from a modern sophisticated jet fighter. This application demonstrates the important role played by the analyst in combining engineering judgment and estimator statistics to yield meaningful results. During the analysis, the problems of uniqueness of the extracted set of parameters and of longitudinal coupling effects were encountered and resolved. The results for all flight runs are presented in tabular form and as time history comparisons between the estimated states and the actual flight test data

    Development of a VOR/DME model for an advanced concepts simulator

    The report presents a definition of a VOR/DME, airborne and ground systems simulation model. This description was drafted in response to a need in the creation of an advanced concepts simulation in which flight station design for the 1980 era can be postulated and examined. The simulation model described herein provides a reasonable representation of VOR/DME station in the continental United States including area coverage by type and noise errors. The detail in which the model has been cast provides the interested researcher with a moderate fidelity level simulator tool for conducting research and evaluation of navigator algorithms. Assumptions made within the development are listed and place certain responsibilities (data bases, communication with other simulation modules, uniform round earth, etc.) upon the researcher

    The Effects of a Photoionizing UV Background on the Formation of Disk Galaxies

    We use high resolution N-body/gasdynamical simulations to investigate the effects of a photoionizing UV background on the assembly of disk galaxies in hierarchically clustering universes. We focus on the mass and rotational properties of gas that can cool to form centrifugally supported disks in dark matter halos of different mass. Photoheating can significantly reduce the amount of gas that can cool in galactic halos. Depending on the strength of the UV background field, the amount of cooled gas can be reduced by up to 50%50\% in systems with circular speeds in the range 8080-200200 \kms. The magnitude of the effect, however, is not enough to solve the ``overcooling'' problem that plagues hierarchical models of galaxy formation if the UV background is chosen to be consistent with estimates based on recent observations of QSO absorption systems. Photoionization has little effect on the collapse of gas at high redshift and affects preferentially gas that is accreted at late times. Since disks form inside-out, accreting higher angular momentum gas at later times, disks formed in the presence of a UV background have spins that are even smaller than those formed in simulations that do not include the effects of photoionization. This exacerbates the angular momentum problem that afflicts hierarchical models of disk formation. We conclude that photoionization cannot provide the heating mechanism required to reconcile hierarchically clustering models with observations. Energy feedback and enrichment processes from the formation and evolution of stars must therefore be indispensable ingredients for any successful model of the formation of disk galaxies.Comment: 36 pages, w/ embedded figures, submitted to ApJ.     Integration of altitude and airspeed information into a primary flight display via moving-tape formats

    A ground-based aircraft simulation study was conducted to determine the effect on pilot performance of replacing the electromechanical altimeter and airspeed indicators with electronically generated representations integrated into the primary flight display via moving-tape (linear moving scale) formats. Several key factors relating to moving-tape formats were examined during the study: tape centering, secondary (trend) information, and tape orientation. The factor of centering refers to whether the tape was centered about the actual airspeed or altitude or about some defined reference value. Tape orientation refers to whether the values represented are arranged in either descending or ascending order. Six pilots participated in this study, with each subject performing 18 runs along a single, known flight profile. Subjective results indicated that the moving-tape formats were generally better than that of the conventional instruments. They also indicated that an actual-centered fixed pointer was preferred to a reference-centered pointer. Performance data for a visual secondary task showed that formats not containing trend information produced better performance; however, no difference was noted in airspeed tracking or altitude tracking performance. Regarding tape orientation, subjective comments indicated that there was lower work load and better performance when the airspeed tape had the high numbers at the top

    Stars beyond Galaxies: The Origin of Extended Luminous Halos around Galaxies

    (Abridged) We use numerical simulations to investigate the origin and structure of the luminous halos that surround isolated galaxies. These stellar structures extend out to several hundred kpc away from a galaxy, and consist of stars shed by merging subunits during the many accretion events that characterize the hierarchical assembly of galaxies. Such origin suggests that outer luminous halos are ubiquitous and that they should appear as an excess of light over extrapolations of the galaxy's inner profile beyond its traditional luminous radius. The mass profile of the accreted stellar component is well approximated by a model where the logarithmic slope steepens monotonically with radius; from -3 at the luminous edge of the galaxy to -4 or steeper near the virial radius of the system. Such spatial distribution is consistent with that of Galactic and M31 globular clusters, suggesting that many of the globulars were brought in by accretion events, in a manner akin to the classic Searle-Zinn scenario. The outer stellar spheroid is supported by a velocity dispersion tensor with a substantial and radially increasing radial anisotropy. These properties distinguish the stellar halo from the dark matter component, which is more isotropic in velocity space, as well as from some tracers of the outer spheroid such as satellite galaxies. Most stars in the outer halo formed in progenitors that have since merged with the central galaxy; very few stars in the halo are contributed by satellites that survive as self-bound entities at the present. These features are in reasonable agreement with recent observations of the outer halo of the MW, of M31, and of other isolated spirals, and suggest that all of these systems underwent an early period of active merging, as envisioned in hierarchical models of galaxy formation.Comment: Submitted to MNRAS, 13 pages, 12 figure
