The purpose of this study was to compare the physical demands associated with three direct-current (DC) right angle power tool tightening strategies. Thirty-six participants (x ̅ = 37.14 years ± 12.03) were assigned to one of two experimental groups: 1) Hard joint (30o, n=18), and, 2) Soft joint (540o, n=18). Within each experimental group, participants performed 36 trials, consisting of 3 tightening strategies, 3 target torques and 4 joint locations, in random order. Data from 3Dlinear sensor handle, motion capture markers, and Borg ratings were analyzed. Repeated measures ANOVA with Tukey’s post hoc test were used to determine statistical significance (p\u3c0.05). Participants operating the TurboTight® fastening strategy experienced the least forces at the hand-handle interface, least joint angle displacements (shoulder & elbow angular displacement) as well as reported the lowest ratings of discomfort and strength

Examining the Novel The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time Using a Narrative Inquiry Analysis: How do Sensory Behaviors Impact Adolescents?

    Get PDF
This project seeks to understand how sensory processing disorder (SPD) impacts a teenager in the novel The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time by Mark Haddon. The book tells the story of a young teenage boy named Christopher who goes on a quest to solve the murder of his neighbor’s dog. Although the novel is a work of fiction, the main character is based off of the author’s experiences working with children who have diagnoses such as SPD and autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Christopher experiences sensory processing difficulties, and his account of his local neighborhood mystery is not only an investigation, but also insight into the nature of SPD. A qualitative, narrative inquiry analysis approach provides insight into Christopher’s sensory experiences as an adolescent. Narrative analysis helps to understand the personal, social, and cultural experiences through story telling (Cohen & Crabtree, 2006). It is a valuable tool to gain internal thoughts, emotions, and perspectives from a person who experiences sensory patterns and sensory dysfunction first hand. Coding strategies were used to identify themes throughout the novel. This approach utilizes a unique perspective for gathering sensory data, as compared to the typical assessments and observation skills that clinicians, specifically occupational therapists, use to guide intervention. Coding techniques used to analyze the novel allow for increased awareness of the unique needs of adolescents with sensory difficulties. Mark Haddon’s work is a beneficial read for clinicians, caregivers, and interested readers alike

    Get PDF
This paper analyzes the dynamics of innovation in the economy. Thus, it examines the economic and social conditions involved in the technological progress and promotion of innovations. The economic structure is seen in front of the company's innovative features and the accumulation of capabilities dedicated to the innovation. The social conditions are considered in respect of the role of institutions in the innovation process. The relationship between economic and social environments shape the social capital, responsible for the generation, dissemination and use of technologies that shape the innovation process. The analysis of these conditions for the promotion of innovation is built by means of systemic models of innovation. These models capture innovation in four environments, the national, sectoral, regional and technological. Stylized facts are verified in the literature and confirm the conditions microeconomic, sectoral, regional and institutional into the development of innovations. The artice proposes that the study of innovation incorporates these differences in their theoretical and empirical body.

University-industry collaboration importance in innovative brazilian industrial firms: a sectorial model

    Get PDF
This article examines empirically the university-industry collaboration (UIC) importance in innovative firms on Brazilian industry. This relation is considered an important tool for economic growth in innovation-led firms. It was used a hierarchical regression model for 25.667 innovative industrial firms in the year 2005, the innovation involves product, process, or organizational change. The Total Factor Productivity was introduced as independent variable, because it can be used in all firms as performance measure, and it was average centralized. The TFP is explained by firm’s internal capabilities, and in industry by the UIC importance. The found results are upward average (positive sign), and downward average (negative sign). The sectorial impact of UIC in the TFP is positive, but near zero. The internal capabilities present exchanged signs between the firm and the industry, only innovative labor have both signs positive. The random effects identify nine industries with upward productivity gains, 8,26 % of total Brazilian industry, and these industries are traditional, low-tech intensity, only the automotive industry is medium-technology. Twenty industries have downward productivity gains, 18,35 % of total Brazilian industry, and between them are high-technology industries, as diverse capital tools, and electronics.

Title from PDF of title page (University of Missouri--Columbia, viewed on March 7, 2011).The entire thesis text is included in the research.pdf file; the official abstract appears in the short.pdf file; a non-technical public abstract appears in the public.pdf file.Dissertation advisor: Dr. Cynthia MacGregor.Vita.Ed. D. University of Missouri--Columbia 2010.The increased accountability to schools and districts to meet federal standings has lead to commencing systematic approaches to the needs of all students. In order for teachers to be able to facilitate instructional strategies that are differentiated and functional for all students they must receive leadership and support. The importance of expertise and leadership in the educational process is paramount, for there is more power in a leadership model and not necessarily in a model that designs its own standards. This need for expertise and leadership has lead to collaboration among general and special education experts, as well as the students' families, achieves an integrated and effective approach in response to struggling learners. First supported by senior administration in school districts, the Teacher Support Team (TST) initiative relied upon a selected team within each school to show what it can achieve for students. This leads to the significance of distributive leadership in the TST and creating relational trust by allowing those in the organization to take leadership roles and distribute the leadership appears to be imperative. This allows for greater participation in the organization, as well as greater morale and a relieved workload for the leader. It also encourages leadership in the organization, which benefits the organization as a whole. The overall purpose of this study was to establish a connection between the role of distributed leadership and the impact of TSTs on elementary students of high poverty. To achieve this, information was gathered from high poverty elementary schools in the Sunnyside Public School District. The study examined key respondents' perceptions on the leadership within the TST. A mixed method of gathering both qualitative and quantitative data was chosen as the most appropriate approach to collect the data. The project began by the researcher contacting six high poverty elementary schools within the Sunnyside Public Schools and requesting their participation in the research project. The purpose of narrowing the research to schools that serve a high poverty population is to ensure similarities within the students and communities. Each TST was made up of the building administrator, a TST coordinator, and other teachers as noted by the team. Each team was provided an opportunity to participate in the research activity and it was assured the data was anonymous and not reflective of employment performance or used as an evaluative tool. The approach to the design was a mixed methods research study. Based on the data gathered via a survey, quantitative information was gathered in order to address the research questions. In additional to the quantitative approach, a qualitative aspect was analyzed. This mixed methods approach was chosen due to the potential to discover true meaning to the research questions. It was also anticipated the mixed methods approach would allow for further research designs to come to the forefront. Descriptive analyses were preformed to support the research questions and sub-parts to the research questions. Finding of this study displayed both favorable and less favorable confidence in the leadership of the TST coordinator and the TST itself. The concerns of the TST coordinator and the TST itself were focused on time being wasted, weak leadership, and teachers who were frustrated with the results of the TST process.Includes bibliographical reference
