    Coupling of Transport and Chemical Processes in Catalytic Combustion

    Catalytic combustors have demonstrated the ability to operate efficiently over a much wider range of fuel air ratios than are imposed by the flammability limits of conventional combustors. Extensive commercial use however needs the following: (1) the design of a catalyst with low ignition temperature and high temperature stability, (2) reducing fatigue due to thermal stresses during transient operation, and (3) the development of mathematical models that can be used as design optimization tools to isolate promising operating ranges for the numerous operating parameters. The current program of research involves the development of a two dimensional transient catalytic combustion model and the development of a new catalyst with low temperature light-off and high temperature stablity characteristics

    Adjunctive quetiapine for serotonin reuptake inhibitor-resistant obsessive-compulsive disorder: A meta-analysis of randomised controlled treatment trials

    Small studies have shown positive effects from adding a variety of antipsychotic agents in patients with obsessive–compulsive disorder who are unresponsive to treatment with serotonin reuptake inhibitors. The evidence, however, is contradictory. This paper reports a meta-analysis of existing double-blind randomized placebo-controlled studies looking at the addition of the second-generation antipsychotic quetiapine in such cases. Three studies fulfilled the inclusion criteria. Altogether 102 individuals were subjected to analysis using Review Manager (4.2.7). The results showed evidence of efficacy for adjunctive quetiapine (< 400 mg/day) on the primary efficacy criterion, measured as changes from baseline in total Yale–Brown Obsessive Compulsive Scale scores (P = 0.008), the clinical significance of which was limited by between-study heterogeneity. The mechanism underlying the effect may involve serotonin and/or dopamine neurotransmission

    Pregabalin effects on neural response to emotional faces

    Pregabalin has shown promise in the treatment of anxiety disorders. Previous functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies indicate agents used to treat anxiety, e.g., SSRIs and benzodiazepines, attenuate amygdala, insula, and medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) activation during emotional processing. Our prior study has shown that during anticipation of an emotional stimulus, pregabalin attenuates amygdala and insula activation but increases medial PFC activation. In this study, we examined whether, similar to SSRIs and benzodiazepines, pregabalin attenuates amygdala, insula, and medial PFC during emotional face processing. Sixteen healthy volunteers underwent a double-blind within-subjects fMRI study investigating effects of placebo, 50 mg, and 200 mg pregabalin on neural activation during an emotional face-matching task. Linear mixed model analysis revealed that pregabalin dose-dependently attenuated left amygdala activation during fearful face-matching and left anterior insula activation during angry face-matching. The 50 mg dose exhibited more robust effects than the 200 mg dose in the right anterior insula and ventral ACC. Thus, pregabalin shares some similarity to SSRIs and benzodiazepines in attenuating anger and fear-related insula and amygdala activation during emotional face processing. However, there is evidence that a subclinical 50 mg dose of pregabalin produced more robust and widespread effects on neural responses in this paradigm than the more clinically relevant 200 mg dose. Taken together, pregabalin has a slightly different effect on brain activation as it relates to anticipation and emotional face processing, which may account for its unique characteristic as an agent for the treatment of anxiety disorders

    Approximations of Sobolev norms in Carnot groups

    This paper deals with a notion of Sobolev space W1,pW^{1,p} introduced by J.Bourgain, H.Brezis and P.Mironescu by means of a seminorm involving local averages of finite differences. This seminorm was subsequently used by A.Ponce to obtain a Poincar\'e-type inequality. The main results that we present are a generalization of these two works to a non-Euclidean setting, namely that of Carnot groups. We show that the seminorm expressd in terms of the intrinsic distance is equivalent to the LpL^p norm of the intrinsic gradient, and provide a Poincar\'e-type inequality on Carnot groups by means of a constructive approach which relies on one-dimensional estimates. Self-improving properties are also studied for some cases of interest

    Solar Oscillations and Convection: II. Excitation of Radial Oscillations

    Solar p-mode oscillations are excited by the work of stochastic, non-adiabatic, pressure fluctuations on the compressive modes. We evaluate the expression for the radial mode excitation rate derived by Nordlund and Stein (Paper I) using numerical simulations of near surface solar convection. We first apply this expression to the three radial modes of the simulation and obtain good agreement between the predicted excitation rate and the actual mode damping rates as determined from their energies and the widths of their resolved spectral profiles. We then apply this expression for the mode excitation rate to the solar modes and obtain excellent agreement with the low l damping rates determined from GOLF data. Excitation occurs close to the surface, mainly in the intergranular lanes and near the boundaries of granules (where turbulence and radiative cooling are large). The non-adiabatic pressure fluctuations near the surface are produced by small instantaneous local imbalances between the divergence of the radiative and convective fluxes near the solar surface. Below the surface, the non-adiabatic pressure fluctuations are produced primarily by turbulent pressure fluctuations (Reynolds stresses). The frequency dependence of the mode excitation is due to effects of the mode structure and the pressure fluctuation spectrum. Excitation is small at low frequencies due to mode properties -- the mode compression decreases and the mode mass increases at low frequency. Excitation is small at high frequencies due to the pressure fluctuation spectrum -- pressure fluctuations become small at high frequencies because they are due to convection which is a long time scale phenomena compared to the dominant p-mode periods.Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ (scheduled for Dec 10, 2000 issue). 17 pages, 27 figures, some with reduced resolution -- high resolution versions available at http://www.astro.ku.dk/~aake/astro-ph/0008048

    This study is based on the results of the initial observation that the performance of employeesgovernment environments Eastern District of Siau indicated relatively low. This condition is presumablyrelated to the implementation of policies not optimal development of human resources quality civil servantsin the region. Thus, this study aims to: (1) Examine the impact of the quality of human resource developmentpolicy environment of government civil servants Eastern District of Siau Island District Sitaro. (2) to analyzedifferences in the performance of employees government environments Eastern District of Siau IslandDistrict Sitaro between before and after participating in education and training (Training).This research applies descriptive and quantitative approach combined with a qualitative approach, thesample of respondents purposively set as many as 44 employees. After analyzing the data collected byapplying the product moment correlation technique and simple linear resgresi.The results of data analysis showed that (1). The average implementation of the development policy ofhuman resource quality of civil servants and the gains of government employees districts Siau Timur, bothare in the category of "medium" or not achieve optimal results. (2) Policy development of quality humanresources dilingkingan government civil servants Eastern District of Siau positive and significant impact onemployee performance improvement.The conclusions that can be drawn from this research is that an employee who has been following thedevelopment program through education and training (training) showed a much higher performance thanbefore following the employee development program. Advice can be given is conveyed to the government ofRegency Sitaro for more intensive follow-include civil servants, either at the district or sub-district / villagein educational activities and training, and much needed concrete efforts of the local government districtSitaro in the form of rotation, transfer, training in the workplace and others

    Making a home, finding a job: investigating early housing and employment outcomes for young people leaving care

    This paper presents findings from a new study of outcomes for young people leaving care funded by the Department for Education and Skills. It reports findings for a sample of 106 young people in relation to progress made in housing and employment some 12-15 months after leaving care. The generally poor employment outcomes of care leavers are acknowledged, but ingredients that make for success are also highlighted, including the value of settled care and post-care careers, sound career planning and, significantly, the value of delaying young people's transitions from care. Early career paths also interconnect with how young people fare in housing, in developing life skills and with other problems in their lives after leaving care. Housing outcomes were more encouraging and predominantly shaped by events after leaving care, and faring well in housing was the factor most closely associated with positive mental well-being in young people. Some groups that are at risk of faring badly are identified, including young people with mental-health problems, young people with persistent offending or substance misuse problems and, in some respects, young disabled people. The implications of these findings for leaving care services are considered

    Blocking and Persistence in the Zero-Temperature Dynamics of Homogeneous and Disordered Ising Models

    A ``persistence'' exponent theta has been extensively used to describe the nonequilibrium dynamics of spin systems following a deep quench: for zero-temperature homogeneous Ising models on the d-dimensional cubic lattice, the fraction p(t) of spins not flipped by time t decays to zero like t^[-theta(d)] for low d; for high d, p(t) may decay to p(infinity)>0, because of ``blocking'' (but perhaps still like a power). What are the effects of disorder or changes of lattice? We show that these can quite generally lead to blocking (and convergence to a metastable configuration) even for low d, and then present two examples --- one disordered and one homogeneous --- where p(t) decays exponentially to p(infinity).Comment: 8 pages (LaTeX); to appear in Physical Review Letter

    The connection between BRG1, CTCF and topoisomerases at TAD boundaries

    The eukaryotic genome is partitioned into topologically associating domains (TADs). Despite recent advances characterizing TADs and TAD boundaries, the organization of these structures is an important dimension of genome architecture and function that is not well understood. Recently, we demonstrated that knockdown of BRG1, an ATPase driving the chromatin remodeling activity of mammalian SWI/SNF enzymes, globally alters long-range genomic interactions and results in a reduction of TAD boundary strength. We provided evidence suggesting that this effect may be due to BRG1 affecting nucleosome occupancy around CTCF sites present at TAD boundaries. In this review, we elaborate on our findings and speculate that BRG1 may contribute to the regulation of the structural and functional properties of chromatin at TAD boundaries by affecting the function or the recruitment of CTCF and DNA topoisomerase complexes

    Research review: young people leaving care

    This paper reviews the international research on young people leaving care. Set in the context of a social exclusion framework, it explores young people's accelerated and compressed transitions to adulthood, and discusses the development and classification of leaving care services in responding to their needs. It then considers the evidence from outcome studies and argues that adopting a resilience framework suggests that young people leaving care may fall into three groups: young people 'moving on', 'survivors' and 'victims'. In concluding, it argues that these three pathways are associated with the quality of care young people receive, their transitions from care and the support they receive after care
