Making sense of the local Galactic escape speed estimates in direct dark matter searches

Direct detection (DD) of dark matter (DM) candidates in the $\lesssim$10 GeV mass range is very sensitive to the tail of their velocity distribution. The important quantity is the maximum WIMP speed in the observer's rest frame, i.e. in average the sum of the local Galactic escape speed $v_{\rm esc}$ and of the circular velocity of the Sun $v_c$. While the latter has been receiving continuous attention, the former is more difficult to constrain. The RAVE Collaboration has just released a new estimate of $v_{\rm esc}$ (Piffl {\em et al.}, 2014 --- P14) that supersedes the previous one (Smith {\em et al.}, 2007), which is of interest in the perspective of reducing the astrophysical uncertainties in DD. Nevertheless, these new estimates cannot be used blindly as they rely on assumptions in the dark halo modeling which induce tight correlations between the escape speed and other local astrophysical parameters. We make a self-consistent study of the implications of the RAVE results on DD assuming isotropic DM velocity distributions, both Maxwellian and ergodic. Taking as references the experimental sensitivities currently achieved by LUX, CRESST-II, and SuperCDMS, we show that: (i) the exclusion curves associated with the best-fit points of P14 may be more constraining by up to $\sim 40$% with respect to standard limits, because the underlying astrophysical correlations induce a larger local DM density; (ii) the corresponding relative uncertainties inferred in the low WIMP mass region may be moderate, down to 10-15% below 10 GeV. We finally discuss the level of consistency of these results with other independent astrophysical constraints. Backreaction and the Covariant Formalism of General Relativity

This thesis is a review of backreaction, which is a possible alternative to dark energy and modified gravity. We describe in detail the 3+1 covariant formalism and Frobenius' theorem. We present the averaging procedure developed by Buchert, the Buchert equations and the generalization of these equations to the case of general matter. We then generalize to arbitrary number of spatial dimensions. L'articolo parla della formazione del friulano ed esamina i suoi usi linguistici e letterari. Per comprendere il processo di caratterizzazione linguistica si è partiti da una puntualizzazione storico-geografica, completata da un'analisi storico-linguisitca. Si è accennato ai problemi dell'unità interna del friulano, dell'appartenenza al gruppo «retoromanzo», del rapporto con le lingue limitrofe. Per concludere si è presentato il panorama letterario friulano, il suo rapporto con la cultura locale e all'opposto il tentativo di emancipazione artistica.The article refers to the formation of Friulano and examines its linguistic and literary use. In order to understand the process of linguistic characterisation, the essay starts with an historico-geographical description, completed with an historico-linguistic analysis. Mention is made of the problems of the internal unity of Friulano, of its pertaining to the «retoromanzo» group, of its relationship with limitroph languages. In conclusion, the article sets out the literary panorama for Friulano, its relationship with the local culture and, in contrast to this, the attempts at artistic emancipation

The use of fuzzy logic and expert systems for rating and pricing firms: a new perspective on valuation.

This paper presents an expert system aimed at evaluating firms and business units. It makes use of fuzzy logic and integrates financial, strategic, managerial aspects, processing both quantitative and qualitative information. Twenty-nine value drivers are explicitly taken into account and combined together via “if-then” rules to produce an output. The output is a real number in the interval [0,1], representing the value-creation power of the firm. The role of training in decreasing anxiety among experienced computer users

The purpose of our paper is twofold: on one hand we draw on the team climate literature to understand how IT knowledge integration capability can be promoted within team-based structures; on the other hand we rely on resource-based view framework for understanding how IT knowledge integration capability affects teams performance, in terms of effectiveness, and efficiency. We tested our research model on a sample of 410 members and leaders of 69 organizational work teams. Results show the critical role played by team climate for favouring IT knowledge integration capability, which in turn affects team outcomes.

International audienceDeuxième montagne d'altitude, avec ses 8609 mètres, dans le monde de l'alpinisme, le K2 est considéré comme la montagne la plus difficile à gravir dans le cercle exclusif de huit mille mètres. Située dans l'Himalaya, à la frontière entre le Pakistan et la Chine, cette montagne a une valeur particulière pour l'Italie. « L'éperon des Abruzzes », la voie alpine la plus utilisée pour se rapprocher du sommet, a été inaugurée en 1909 par Luigi Amedeo, duc des Abruzzes. Après cette entreprise, la conquête de la montagne n'a pas été facile. En 1939, puis en 1953, la montagne a été le théâtre de deux expéditions américaines qui ont abouti à une tragédie. En 1954, c'est à nouveau un Italien, Ardito Desio, qui organise l'expédition, toute italienne, qui réussit dans l'entreprise. L'Italie vit ce succès comme un triomphe national. Mais très vite, les héros de cette escalade donnent vie à un feuilleton autour des derniers instants de l'ascension quand, près du sommet, il ne restait plus que quatre grimpeurs pour l'attaque finale. Les faits, d’ailleurs s’y prêtent : le 3O janvier 1889, Rodolphe – le prince héritier, marié, de la famille Habsbourg – est trouvé mort dans des circonstances mystérieuses dans un lit de son pavillon de chasse, à Mayerling, à côté d’une femme, elle aussi sans vie. Les versions officieuses et officielle(s) se diffusent immédiatement. Au début des années 1920, G.A. Borgese s’est consacré à ce drame en écrivant deux livres sur les faits : La tragedia di Mayerling, texte en prose, et L’Arciduca, une pièce de théâtre, parcourent l’un la vie entière des deux héros, l’autre la dernière nuit des deux amants, en tentant d’analyser et reconstruire ce qui a réellement poussé ces deux aristocrates à se donner une mort commune.Nella notte del 30 gennaio 1889, nella tenuta di caccia della famiglia Asburgo a Mayerling accadde una di quelle tragedie su cui le cronache non potevano che accanirsi.
