Mineralogy of the Ibitira eucrite and comparison with other eucrites and lunar samples
Single crystal X-ray and energy dispersive electron-probe techniques are used to study the mineralogy and track history of Ibitira. The mineralogical features of the Ibitire eucrite are described and examined in relation to data for other eucrites and howardites and lunar samples. The processes which transformed a presumed igneous texture into a more complex one are discussed
PPl 15: The First Brown Dwarf Spectroscopic Binary
PPl 15 is the first object to have been confirmed as a brown dwarf by the
lithium test (in 1995), though its inferred mass was very close to the
substellar limit. It is a member of the Pleiades open cluster. Its position in
a cluster color-magnitude diagram suggested that it might be binary, and
preliminary indications that it is a double-lined spectroscopic binary were
reported by us in 1997. Here we report on the results of a consecutive week of
Keck HIRES observations of this system, which yield its orbit. It has a period
of about 5.8 days, and an eccentricity of 0.4+/-0.05. The rotation of the stars
is slow for this class of objects. Because the system luminosity is divided
between 2 objects with a mass ratio of 0.85, this renders each of them an
incontrovertible brown dwarf, with masses between 60-70 jupiters. We show that
component B is a little redder than A by studying their wavelength-dependent
line ratios, and that this variation is compatible with the mass ratio. We
confirm that the system has lithium, but cannot support the original conclusion
that it is depleted (which would be surprising, given the new masses). This is
a system of very close objects which, if they had combined, would have produced
a low mass star. We discuss the implications of this discovery for the theories

Tin-selenium compounds at ambient and high pressures
SnxSey crystalline compounds consisting of Sn and Se atoms of varying
composition are systematically investigated at pressures from 0 to 100 GPa
using the first-principles evolutionary crystal structure search method based
on density functional theory (DFT). All known experimental phases of SnSe and
SnSe2 are found without any prior input. A second order polymorphic phase
transition from SnSe-Pnma phase to SnSe-Cmcm phase is predicted at 2.5 GPa.
Initially being semiconducting, this phase becomes metallic at 7.3 GPa. Upon
further increase of pressure up to 36.6 GPa, SnSe-Cmcm phase is transformed to
CsCl-type SnSe-Pm3m phase, which remains stable at even higher pressures. A
metallic compound with different stoichiometry, Sn3Se4-I43d, is found to be
thermodynamically stable from 18 GPa to 70 GPa. Known semiconductor tin
diselenide SnSe2-P3m1 phase is found to be thermodynamically stable from
ambient pressure up to 18 GPa. Initially being semiconducting, it experiences
metalization at pressures above 8 GPa
The Automatic Real-Time GRB Pipeline of the 2-m Liverpool Telescope
The 2-m Liverpool Telescope (LT), owned by Liverpool John Moores University,
is located in La Palma (Canary Islands) and operates in fully robotic mode. In
2005, the LT began conducting an automatic GRB follow-up program. On receiving
an automatic GRB alert from a Gamma-Ray Observatory (Swift, INTEGRAL, HETE-II,
IPN) the LT initiates a special override mode that conducts follow-up
observations within 2-3 min of the GRB onset. This follow-up procedure begins
with an initial sequence of short (10-s) exposures acquired through an r' band
filter. These images are reduced, analyzed and interpreted automatically using
pipeline software developed by our team called "LT-TRAP" (Liverpool Telescope
Transient Rapid Analysis Pipeline); the automatic detection and successful
identification of an unknown and potentially fading optical transient triggers
a subsequent multi-color imaging sequence. In the case of a candidate brighter
than r'=15, either a polarimetric (from 2006) or a spectroscopic observation
(from 2007) will be triggered on the LT. If no candidate is identified, the
telescope continues to obtain z', r' and i' band imaging with increasingly
longer exposure times. Here we present a detailed description of the LT-TRAP
and briefly discuss the illustrative case of the afterglow of GRB 050502a,
whose automatic identification by the LT just 3 min after the GRB, led to the
acquisition of the first early-time (< 1 hr) multi-color light curve of a GRB

Disc loss and renewal in A0535+26
This paper presents observations of the Be/X-ray binary system A0535+26
revealing the first observed loss of its circumstellar disc, demonstrated by
the loss of its JHK infrared excess and optical/IR line emission. However
optical/IR spectroscopy reveals the formation of a new inner disc with
significant density and emission strength at small radii; the disc has proven
to be stable over 5 months in this intermediate state.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, accepted by MNRAS, uses mn.st
High-Pressure Synthesis of a Pentazolate Salt
The pentazolates, the last all-nitrogen members of the azole series, have
been notoriously elusive for the last hundred years despite enormous efforts to
make these compounds in either gas or condensed phases. Here we report a
successful synthesis of a solid state compound consisting of isolated
pentazolate anions N5-, which is achieved by compressing and laser heating
cesium azide (CsN3) mixed with N2 cryogenic liquid in a diamond anvil cell. The
experiment was guided by theory, which predicted the transformation of the
mixture at high pressures to a new compound, cesium pentazolate salt (CsN5).
Electron transfer from Cs atoms to N5 rings enables both aromaticity in the
pentazolates as well as ionic bonding in the CsN5 crystal. This work provides a
critical insight into the role of extreme conditions in exploring unusual
bonding routes that ultimately lead to the formation of novel high nitrogen
content species
The distances to the X-ray binaries LSI +61 303 and A0535+262
Chevalier & Ilovaisky (1998) use Hipparcos data to show that the X-ray binary
systems LSI+61 303 and A0535+262 are a factor of ten closer (i.e. d = few
hundred pc) than previously thought (d = 2 kpc). We present high quality CCD
spectra of the systems, and conclude that the spectral types, reddening and
absolute magnitudes of these objects are strongly inconsistent with the closer
distances. We propose that the Hipparcos distances to these two systems are
incorrect due to their relatively faint optical magnitudes.Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS Letter
The 2010 M 87 VHE flare and its origin: the multi-wavelength picture
The giant radio galaxy M 87, with its proximity (16 Mpc) and its very massive
black hole ((3 - 6) \times 10^9 M_solar), provides a unique laboratory to
investigate very high energy (E>100 GeV; VHE) gamma-ray emission from active
galactic nuclei and, thereby, probe particle acceleration to relativistic
energies near supermassive black holes (SMBH) and in relativistic jets. M 87
has been established as a VHE gamma-ray emitter since 2005. The VHE gamma-ray
emission displays strong variability on timescales as short as a day. In 2008,
a rise in the 43 GHz Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) radio emission of the
innermost region (core; extension of < 100 Rs ; Schwarzschild radii) was found
to coincide with a flaring activity at VHE. This had been interpreted as a
strong indication that the VHE emission is produced in the direct vicinity of
the SMBH. In 2010 a flare at VHE was again detected triggering further
multi-wavelength (MWL) observations with the VLBA, Chandra, and other
instruments. At the same time, M 87 was also observed with the Fermi-LAT
telescope at MeV/GeV energies, the European VLBI Network (EVN), and the
Liverpool Telescope (LT). Here, preliminary results from the 2010 campaign will
