    Perceived Parental Monitoring on Adolescence Premarital Sexual Behavior in Pontianak City, Indonesia

    Inadaquate parental monitoring is widely recognized as a risk factor for the development of child and adolescent conduct problems, including early premarital sexual behavior. Previous studies examining parental monitoring have largely effect to adolescents premarital sexual behavior. Parental monitoring is the most important and effective factor to prevent early adolescents sexual activity. This paper examines the role of perceived parental monitoring in adolescent\u27s premarital sexual behavior (study on Adolescent\u27s Junior High School in Pontianak). A cross-sectional study and proportionated random sampling was conducted among 402 adolescents of junior high school at six subdistricts in Pontianak. SEM analyses was conducted using SMART-PLS. Result of path analysis revealed that parental knowledge (r = 0.389) and parental-adolescence relationship (r = 0.334) had a strong influence on parental monitoring. Then, parental monitoring had a significant indirect relationship with adolescent premarital sexual behavior through attitudes about premarital sexual (path coefficient = 0.063), and attitudes about premarital sexual and intention to sexual behaviour (path coefficient = 0.03). Parental monitoring can act as protective factor in early adolescent premarital sexual behavior. Therefore, risk reduction interventions with adolescents should include their parents to learn about monitoring skill and develop skill that will allow them to buffer negative influences

    Perceived parenting styles and adjustment during emerging adulthood: a cross-national perspective

    The aim of the present study is to determine whether the influence of parenting style on children’s wellbeing is sustained during emerging adulthood. This is a stage in which young people, despite feeling themselves to be adults, often remain in the family home and continue to be financially dependent on their parents. Moreover, since parents’ beliefs, attitudes and behaviors are constructed and interpreted within their cultural milieu, the study also aims to explore the situation in Spain (SP) and Portugal (PT). Those two Southern Europe countries are representative of what is known as the “family welfare regime”, in which the family acts as the main provider of care and security not only during childhood, but also during emerging adulthood. Thus, the present study examines, from a cross-cultural perspective, the relationship between perceived parenting styles and psychological adjustment among a sample of 1047 emerging adults from Spain and Portugal. The results reveal that the most beneficial styles during this stage are the authoritative and permissive ones, with the authoritarian style being more closely related to psychological distress.     Parenting practices as risk or preventive factors for adolescent involvement in cyberbullying: Contribution of children and parent gender

    Literature points out the role of parenting on adolescent cyberbullying involvement. However, it is necessary to clarify how gender affects this relationship. The aim of this study has been to examine the relation between the adolescents’ perception about parenting practices, and their involvement in cyberbullying, bearing in mind both girls’ and boys’ gender and progenitors’ gender. The sample comprised 2060 Spanish secondary school students (47.9% girls; Mage = 14.34). Two-way ANOVA and binary logistic regression analyses were carried out. An effect of the interaction between sex and cyberbullying roles in maternal affection and communication, inductive discipline, and psychological control, as well as paternal promotion of autonomy and psychological control, was found. In general, it can be observed that the more negative results were found in cyber-aggressors, especially when this role is assumed by girls. The results of logistic regression analysis suggest that parenting practices explain better cyberbullying involvement in girls compared to boys, finding some important differences between both sexes regarding protective and risk factors.     Relationship between discordance in parental monitoring and behavioral problems among Chilean adolescents

    This study investigated the role of discrepancies between parent and youth reports of perceived parental monitoring in adolescent problem behaviors with a Chilean sample (N= 850). Higher levels of discordance concerning parental monitoring predicted greater levels of maladaptive youth behaviors. A positive association between parent-youth discordance and externalizing problems indicated that large adult-youth disagreement in parental monitoring may impose a great risk, despite protective efforts of parental monitoring. Although the direct relationship between parental monitoring and youth internalizing behaviors was not significant, parent-youth incongruence in monitoring was associated with greater levels of internalizing behaviors.     Psychometric properties of Basic Empathy Scale among female juvenile delinquents and school youths

    Research on empathy often distinguishes between affective and cognitive empathy, but there is limited knowledge regarding the application or measurement of these two dimensions of empathy among female youth, especially forensic samples of female youth. The main aim of the present study was to examine the psychometric properties of the Basic Empathy Scale (BES) among a Portuguese sample of female youths (N = 377), composed of incarcerated female juvenile offenders (n = 103) and school youths (n = 274). The two-factor structure of the BES obtained a good fit among the school sample, but the fit among the forensic sample was poor. Both samples demonstrated adequate psychometric properties in terms of Cronbach's alpha, omega coefficient, mean inter item correlations, corrected item-total correlation range, and criterion validity. However, some caution is advised when using the BES with female youth involved in the juvenile justice system, particularly with incarcerated female youth. (C) 2017 Elsevier Ltd.     Roditeljstvo i eksternalizovani problemi adolescenata - rezultati faktorske analize

    Background/Aim. Modern conceptualising of parenting in relation to manifesting adolescence externalising problems is based on parent-child two-way communication, mutual trust and parental involvement. A lot of research reports prove independent contribution of parental variables on expressing externalising problems in middle and late adolescence while data about their mutual relationship are missing. The aim of this study was to determine the relationships of parental variables and variables of externalising problems in a common space. Methods. The study included 507 students, both boys and girls, of Belgrade secondary schools, aged from fifteen to eighteen. Parental monitoring was studied using the Parental Monitoring Scale, affective attachment to parents by the Inventory of Parents and Peers Attachment, parenting practices using the Alabama Parenting Questionnaire and externalising problems by the Achenbach System of Empirically Based Assessment, Youth Self-Report. Results. Factor analysis indicated the existence of 4 factors (components) which together accounted for 65.5% of variance. The first factor (positive parenting and affective attachment to mother) accounted for 38.1%, the second (externalising problems and negative parenting) accounted for 11.26%, the third (affective attachment to father) accounted for 8.93% and the fourth (negative discipline and inadequate affective attachment to mother) accounted for 7.22% of variance. The most important discovery arised from matrix correlation was a negative correlation of the second component with the first (-0.539) and the third (-0.481) one. Conclusion. A positive relationship between parents and adolescents except for a positive parenting practices of parents characterize all the subscales of parental monitoring except for the parental control. Compared to fathers, mothers are generally more involved in life of adolescents and have better mutual relationship with them, but in relation to externalising problems the affective attachment to fathers proved to be very significant even independently of their parenting role.Uvod/Cilj. Moderna konceptualizacija roditeljstva u vezi sa ispoljavanjem eksternalizovanih problema u adolescenciji bazirana je na dvosmernoj komunikaciji roditelj-dete, međusobnom poverenju i uključenosti roditelja. Obilje istraĆŸivačkih nalaza upućuje na dokaze o nezavisnom doprinosu roditeljskih varijabli na ispoljavanje eksternalizovanih problema u srednjoj i kasnoj adolescenciji, dok nedostaju podaci i njihovom međusobnom odnosu. Cilj rada bio je da se ispita odnos roditeljskih varijabli i varijabli eksternalizovanih problema u zajedničkom prostoru. Metode. Ispitivanjem je obuhvaćeno 507 učenika beogradskih srednjih ĆĄkola uzrasta od petnaest do osamnaest godina, oba pola. Roditeljski nadzor je ispitivan putem Skale roditeljskog nadzora, afektivna vezanost za roditelje putem Inventara afektivne vezanosti za roditelje, vaspitni postupci roditelja putem Alabama upitnika o roditeljstvu, a eksternalizovani problemi putem Ahenbahovog sistema empirijski bazirane procene. Rezultati. Faktori analiza upućuje na postojanje 4 faktora (komponente) koji zajedno objaĆĄnjavaju 65,5% varijanse. Prvi faktor (pozitivno roditeljstvo i afektivna vezanost za majku) učestvuje u 38,1%, drugi (eksternalizovani problemi i negativno roditeljstvo) u 11,26%, treći (afektivna vezanost za oca) u 8,93% i četvrti (negativno disciplinovanje i neadekvatno afektivno vezivanje za majku) u 7,22% varijanse. Najznačajniji nalaz proistekao iz matrice korelacije predstavlja negativno korelisanje druge sa prvom (-0,539) i trećom (0,481) komponentom. Zaključak. Pozitivan odnos između roditelja i adolescenata, osim pozitivnih vaspitnih postupaka roditelja, opredeljuju i sve podskale roditeljskog nadzora, sem roditeljske kontrole. Majke su, u odnosu na očeve, generalno uključenje u ĆŸivot adolescenata i ostvaruju bolje odnose sa njima, ali se, u odnosu prema eksternalizovanim problemima, afektivna vezanost za očeve pokazala veoma značajnom i to nezavisno od njihove vaspitne uloge

    Parental Monitoring and Youth's Binge Behaviors: The Role of Sensation Seeking and Life Satisfaction

    Framed within an ecological perspective of the onset of adolescent problem behaviors, the current study explored the joint role of parent-adolescents’ relationships and youth's individual factors in binge eating and drinking. Firstly, in line with pieces of research highlighting the beneficial impact of effective parenting on youth development, the present paper sought to enhance the knowledge about the positive influence of parental monitoring on youth's binge drinking and eating. Moreover, since literature evidenced that the explanatory mechanisms of the association between parental monitoring and binge behaviors are not fully explored, the study focused on the potential intervening role of sensation seeking and life satisfaction as mediators. The study design was cross-sectional and self-report questionnaires were administered among a population of 944 high school students (M = 16.35, SD = 1.31) living in Palermo (Italy). Path analysis showed that parental monitoring was directly and negatively related to both binge eating and binge drinking. Moreover, sensation seeking negatively mediated the relationships between parental monitoring and both binge behaviors, whereas life satisfaction only mediated between parental monitoring and binge eating. The current study provided data useful to understand the complex interrelations between intrapersonal (life satisfaction and personality trait, i.e. sensation seeking) and contextual factors (parent–child relationships) that may discourage or cause eating and alcohol use disorders among youth. Finally, implications for parents and practitioners working with youngsters were discussed
