    The radical character of the acenes: A density matrix renormalization group study

    We present a detailed investigation of the acene series using high-level wavefunction theory. Our ab-initio Density Matrix Renormalization Group algorithm has enabled us to carry out Complete Active Space calculations on the acenes from napthalene to dodecacene correlating the full pi-valence space. While we find that the ground-state is a singlet for all chain-lengths, examination of several measures of radical character, including the natural orbitals, effective number of unpaired electrons, and various correlation functions, suggests that the longer acene ground-states are polyradical in nature.Comment: 10 pages, 8 figures, supplementary material, to be published in J.     STATISTICAL METHODS FOR AFFYMETRIX TILING ARRAY DATA

    Tiling arrays are a microarray technology currently being used for a variety of genomic and epigenomic applications, such as the mapping of transcription, DNA methylation, and histone modifications. Tiling arrays provide high-density coverage of a genome, or a genomic region, through the systematic and sequential placement of probes without regard to genome annotation. In this paper we compare the Affymetrix tiling array to the Affymetrix GeneChip® 3’ expression array and propose methods that address statistical and bioinformatic issues that accompany gene expression data that are generated from Affymetrix tiling arrays.     The Development of a Novel Interprofessional Education Curriculum for third year medical and pharmacy students

    Abstract Introduction: The Liaison Committee on Medical Education and the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education, agencies responsible for the accreditation of medical and pharmacy schools respectively, require interprofessional education (IPE) to be integrated into both curricula. Institutions are given the autonomy to design and implement this requirement, however research is equivocal in regards to when and how best to implement IPE. The development of a new IPE curriculum is often met with a number of challenges, such as a lack of faculty support and resources. Methods: This study describes a newly created pilot IPE curriculum developed with minimal existing organizational IPE structure and resources, led by faculty champions from two complementary healthcare professions, Internal Medicine and Pharmacy. The validated 10-item Student Perceptions of Interprofessional Clinical Education- Revised (SPICE-R) instrument was used to assess the medical and pharmacy students’ attitudes towards interprofessional healthcare teams and the team approach to patient care. Results: Overall, students demonstrated a statistically significant increase in their perception of interprofessional healthcare teams and team approach to patient care. Conclusion: Prior to this IPE curriculum no formal IPE curriculum existed in this setting. This IPE curriculum was successfully implemented with minimal existing resources, the use of faculty champions and student’s perception of IPE improved using the validated SPICE-R instrument. IPE curriculum integration at our institution is in various stages of development. As IPE integration moves forward this pilot can serve as one example of how IPE could be implemented

    In-Situ Infrared Transmission Study of Rb- and K-Doped Fullerenes

    We have measured the four IR active C60C_{60} molecular vibrations in MxC60M_{x}C_{60} (M=K,Rb)(M = K, Rb) as a function of doping xx. We observe discontinuous changes in the vibrational spectra showing four distinct phases (presumably x=0,3,4x = 0, 3, 4, and 6). The 1427cm11427cm^{-1} and 576cm1576cm^{-1} modes show the largest changes shifting downward in frequency in four steps as the doping increases. Several new very weak modes are visible in the x=6x=6 phase and are possibly Raman modes becoming weakly optically active. We present quantitative fits of the data and calculate the electron-phonon coupling of the 1427cm11427cm^{-1} IR mode.Comment: 3 pages, Figure 1 included, 3 more figures available by request.     Effect of room temperature transport vials on DNA quality and phylogenetic composition of faecal microbiota of elderly adults and infants

    Background: Alterations in intestinal microbiota have been correlated with a growing number of diseases. Investigating the faecal microbiota is widely used as a non-invasive and ethically simple proxy for intestinal biopsies. There is an urgent need for collection and transport media that would allow faecal sampling at distance from the processing laboratory, obviating the need for same-day DNA extraction recommended by previous studies of freezing and processing methods for stool. We compared the faecal bacterial DNA quality and apparent phylogenetic composition derived using a commercial kit for stool storage and transport (DNA Genotek OMNIgene GUT) with that of freshly extracted samples, 22 from infants and 20 from older adults. Results: Use of the storage vials increased the quality of extracted bacterial DNA by reduction of DNA shearing. When infant and elderly datasets were examined separately, no differences in microbiota composition were observed due to storage. When the two datasets were combined, there was a difference according to a Wilcoxon test in the relative proportions of Faecalibacterium, Sporobacter, Clostridium XVIII, and Clostridium XlVa after 1 week's storage compared to immediately extracted samples. After 2 weeks' storage, Bacteroides abundance was also significantly different, showing an apparent increase from week 1 to week 2. The microbiota composition of infant samples was more affected than that of elderly samples by storage, with significantly higher Spearman distances between paired freshly extracted and stored samples (

    Posttraumatic growth as positive personality change: evidence, controversies and future directions

    This target article focuses on the construct of post-traumatic growth—positive psychological change experienced as a result of the struggle with highly challenging life circumstances. Prominent theories of post-traumatic growth define it in terms of personality change, and as a result, this area of research should be of great interest to personality psychologists. Despite this fact, most of the research on this topic has not been sufficiently informed by relevant research in personality psychology, and much of the extant research suffers from significant methodological limitations. We review the literature on post-traumatic growth, with a particular focus on how researchers have conceptualized it and the specific methodological issues associated with these conceptualizations. We outline some ways in which personality science can both be enriched by the study of this phenomenon and inform rigorous research on post-traumatic growth and provide a series of guidelines for future research of post-traumatic growth as positive personality change

    Comparison of Pharmaceutical Calculations Learning Outcomes Achieved Within a Traditional Lecture or Flipped Classroom Andragogy

    Objective. To compare learning outcomes achieved from a pharmaceutical calculations course taught in a traditional lecture (lecture model) and a flipped classroom (flipped model). Methods. Students were randomly assigned to the lecture model and the flipped model. Course instructors, content, assessments, and instructional time for both models were equivalent. Overall group performance and pass rates on a standardized assessment (Pcalc OSCE) were compared at six weeks and at six months post-course completion. Results. Student mean exam scores in the flipped model were higher than those in the lecture model at six weeks and six months later. Significantly more students passed the OSCE the first time in the flipped model at six weeks; however, this effect was not maintained at six months. Conclusion. Within a 6 week course of study, use of a flipped classroom improves student pharmacy calculation skill achievement relative to a traditional lecture andragogy. Further study is needed to determine if the effect is maintained over time

    Review of biorthogonal coupled cluster representations for electronic excitation

    Single reference coupled-cluster (CC) methods for electronic excitation are based on a biorthogonal representation (bCC) of the (shifted) Hamiltonian in terms of excited CC states, also referred to as correlated excited (CE) states, and an associated set of states biorthogonal to the CE states, the latter being essentially configuration interaction (CI) configurations. The bCC representation generates a non-hermitian secular matrix, the eigenvalues representing excitation energies, while the corresponding spectral intensities are to be derived from both the left and right eigenvectors. Using the perspective of the bCC representation, a systematic and comprehensive analysis of the excited-state CC methods is given, extending and generalizing previous such studies. Here, the essential topics are the truncation error characteristics and the separability properties, the latter being crucial for designing size-consistent approximation schemes. Based on the general order relations for the bCC secular matrix and the (left and right) eigenvector matrices, formulas for the perturbation-theoretical (PT) order of the truncation errors (TEO) are derived for energies, transition moments, and property matrix elements of arbitrary excitation classes and truncation levels. In the analysis of the separability properties of the transition moments, the decisive role of the so-called dual ground state is revealed. Due to the use of CE states the bCC approach can be compared to so-called intermediate state representation (ISR) methods based exclusively on suitably orthonormalized CE states. As the present analysis shows, the bCC approach has decisive advantages over the conventional CI treatment, but also distinctly weaker TEO and separability properties in comparison with a full (and hermitian) ISR method
