Direct Optical Coupling to an Unoccupied Dirac Surface State in the Topological Insulator Bi2_2Se3_3

We characterize the occupied and unoccupied electronic structure of the topological insulator Bi2_2Se3_3 by one-photon and two-photon angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and slab band structure calculations. We reveal a second, unoccupied Dirac surface state with similar electronic structure and physical origin to the well-known topological surface state. This state is energetically located 1.5 eV above the conduction band, which permits it to be directly excited by the output of a Ti:Sapphire laser. This discovery demonstrates the feasibility of direct ultrafast optical coupling to a topologically protected, spin-textured surface state.Comment: Accepted to Physical Review Letter

The kinematics and morphology of NGC 520: One, two, or three galaxies

    Get PDF
The peculiar galaxy NGC 520 (Arp 157) is often interpreted as an interacting pair of galaxies. The identification of the two bulges and overall morphology of the two galaxies has long been a puzzle which the authors attempt to solve here. New longslit optical spectroscopy and near-infrared images of NGC 520 are presented. These data suggest that the northwest peak is the bulge of one of two galaxies in the system. The other larger bulge is clearly evident in the K band image in the middle of the dust lane. The stellar radial velocity profile in the central 10 seconds of the larger bulge is consistent with counterrotation seen in the molecular gas component. This kinematic subsystem could be the remains of a merged gas-rich irregular

EVOLUTION OF IR-SELECTED GALAXIES IN Z~0.4 CLUSTERS

Wide-field optical and near--IR (JHKJHK) imaging is presented for two rich galaxy clusters: Abell~370 at z=0.374z=0.374 and Abell~851 (Cl0939+47) at z=0.407z=0.407. Galaxy catalogs selected from the near--IR images are 90\% complete to approximately 1.5 mag below KK^\ast resulting in samples with \sim100 probable member galaxies per cluster in the central \sim2 Mpc. Comparison with HSTHST WFPC images yields subsamples of \sim70 galaxies in each cluster with morphological types. Analysis of the complete samples and the HSTHST subsamples shows that the z0.4z\sim 0.4 E/S0s are bluer than those in the Bower et al.\ (1992) Coma sample in the opticalK-K color by 0.130.13~mag for Abell~370 and by 0.180.18~mag for Abell~851. If real, the bluing of the E/S0 populations at moderate redshift is consistent with that calculated from the Bruzual and Charlot (1993) models of passive elliptical galaxy evolution. In both clusters the intrinsic scatter of the known E/S0s about their opticalK-K color--mag relation is small (0.06\sim 0.06 mag) and not significantly different from that of Coma E/S0s as given by Bower et al.\ (1992), indicating that the galaxies within each cluster formed at the same time at an early epoch.Comment: uuencoded gzipped tar file containing latex files of manuscript (42 pages) plus tables (9 pages); figures available by anonymous ftp at ftp://ipac.caltech.edu//pub/pickup/sed ; accepted for publication in the Ap

Environmental degradation of 316 stainless steel in high temperature low cycle fatigue

    Get PDF
Procedures based on modification of the conventional Strainrange Partitioning method are proposed to characterize the time-dependent degradation of engineering alloys in high-temperature, low-cycle fatigue. Creep-fatigue experiments were conducted in air using different waveforms of loading on 316 stainless steel at 816 C (1500 F) to determine the effect of exposure time on cyclic life. Reductions in the partitioned cyclic lives were observed with an increase in the time of exposure (or with the corresponding decrease in the steady-state creep rate) for all the waveforms involving creep strain. Excellent correlations of the experimental data were obtained by modifying the Conventional Strainrange Partitioning life relationships involving creep strain using a power-law term of either: (1) time of exposure, or (2) steady-state creep rate of the creep-fatigue test. Environmental degradation due to oxidation, material degradation due to the precipitation of carbides along the grain boundaries and detrimental deformation modes associated with the prolonged periods of creep were observed to be the main mechanisms responsible for life reductions at long exposure times

Using media to improve the informed consent process for youth undergoing pediatric endoscopy and their parents.

Background and study aims Youth undergoing pediatric endoscopic procedures and their parents demonstrate suboptimal comprehension of the informed consent (IC) process. We developed informational videos discussing key IC elements for pediatric endoscopy and evaluated their effects on youth and parental comprehension of the IC process. Patients and methods A randomized controlled trial of the video intervention was performed among youth undergoing endoscopy and their parents at an academic children's hospital. Randomization occurred at the time of enrollment using permutated blocks. Following the IC process with the proceduralist, subjects underwent structured interviews to assess IC comprehension. An Informed Consent Overall Score (ICOS: range 0 - 4) for comprehension was calculated. Results Seventy-seven pairs of children and their parents participated. Intervention recipients (N = 37 pairs) demonstrated higher ICOS scores as compared to control counterparts (mean (standard deviation): 3.6 (0.7) v. 2.9 (0.9), intervention v. control parents, P < 0.0001 and 2.7 (1.1) v. 1.7 (1.1), intervention v. control youth, P < 0.0001). Conclusions A media intervention addressing key elements of the IC process for pediatric endoscopy was effective in improving comprehension of IC for youth undergoing endoscopic procedures and their parents

A Comparison of Two Non-Verbal Intelligence Tests as Predictors of Academic Success of Navajo Students

This study was a search for a valid and reliable tool for the measurement and appraisal of the Navajo student at Intermountain School whose cultural and bilingual background make many highly verbal tests untrustworthy. The two tests chosen for the study were the Chicago Non-verbal Examination and the Cattell Institute for Personality and Ability Testing Culture Free Test. It was assumed that these tests would call attention to students who had good intellectual ability but were below standard in reading and verbal development and had been overlooked because of their lack of verbal fluency. The two tests were administered to a random sample of one hundred twenty four students (72 boys 52 girls) at Intermountain High School. The tests were administered and corrected by the author, care being taken to follow directions in the manual on administering, correcting, and figuring IQ scores. Statistical treatment was given the obtained data and the findings compared with the standardization sample for each test. Further statistical treatment was given to compare the performance of the boys with the performance of the girls on each test. Grade point averages were obtained for each individual in the sample. A coefficient of correlation between grade point average and IQ scores was figures for both the Chicago Non-verbal and Cattell Institute for Personality and Ability Testing Culture Free Test. A coefficient of correlation between grade point averages and the G score from the General Aptitude Test Battery was computed on ninety eight students on which the scores were available. The results of this study showed that: (1) The Chicago Non-verbal Examination seemed to be more interesting and motivating for Navajo students. (2) The Navajo students in this study scored higher than the standardization sample on the Chicago Non-verbal Examination. This is interesting because on most tests the Navajos score below the mean of the standardization sample
