Faces of the Teouma Lapita People: Art, Accuracy and Facial Approximation
In 2008 we completed facial approximations of four individuals from the early Lapita Culture, a seafaring people who were the first to settle the islands of the Western Pacific circa 3000 years ago. Typically an approximation is performed as a 3D sculpture or using computer graphics. We chose to sketch what we have been able to determine from the remains because the artistic conventions of drawing work with visual perception in ways that are more complementary to the knowledge, theories and methods that make up the facial approximation of human remains
PiRaNhA: A server for the computational prediction of RNA-binding residues in protein sequences
The PiRaNhA web server is a publicly available online resource that automatically predicts the location of RNA-binding residues (RBRs) in protein sequences. The goal of functional annotation of sequences in the field of RNA binding is to provide predictions of high accuracy that require only small numbers of targeted mutations for verification. The PiRaNhA server uses a support vector machine (SVM), with position-specific scoring matrices, residue interface propensity, predicted residue accessibility and residue hydrophobicity as features. The server allows the submission of up to 10 protein sequences, and the predictions for each sequence are provided on a web page and via email. The prediction results are provided in sequence format with predicted RBRs highlighted, in text format with the SVM threshold score indicated and as a graph which enables users to quickly identify those residues above any specific SVM threshold. The graph effectively enables the increase or decrease of the false positive rate. When tested on a non-redundant data set of 42 protein sequences not used in training, the PiRaNhA server achieved an accuracy of 85%, specificity of 90% and a Matthews correlation coefficient of 0.41 and outperformed other publicly available servers. Oral Advocacy Before the United States Supreme Court: Does It Affect the Justices\u27 Decisions?
Our empirical investigation focuses on two areas. First, we are interested in the quality of the oral advocacy presented to the Court, especially in terms of its etiology, as well as its effectiveness. We investigate these questions empirically by utilizing notes taken by Blackmun during oral arguments while he sat on the Court. Specifically, we here utilize the grades that Justice Blackmun assigned to each attorney’s oral arguments. This information allows us to answer two related questions: (1) why do some attorneys make better arguments before the Court; and (2) does the quality of oral advocacy influence who wins and loses? Second, we turn our attention to the information the Justices elicit about themselves during oral arguments. We analyze data on how often Justice Blackmun paid attention to the views expressed by his brethren during oral arguments (by examining when and why he recorded the comments of a particular colleague during orals) and the factors that led him to pay attention to some, but not all, of his colleagues. Additionally, we utilize Blackmun’s notes to demonstrate that what transpired during oral arguments provided him with an indication of whether his colleagues would vote to affirm or reverse the lower court decision at issue. We do so through an examination of when Justice Blackmun attempted to predict the votes of his colleagues in his oral argument notes. The Article proceeds as follows. In the next two Parts, we take up our first set of questions, which focuses on whether experienced and resourceful attorneys provide better arguments and whether arguments presented by counsel can affect decisions Justices make. Part IV focuses on whether Justices attempt to learn about their colleagues during oral arguments and whether such information affects the coalition-formation process that follows the arguments. Finally, we analyze whether what transpires during oral arguments can help a Justice make predictions about how a case will ultimately be decided
Genital warts and cervical neoplasia: an epidemiological study.
Cervical carcinoma and cervical intra-epithelial neoplasia (CIN) are likely to be associated with all sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). To help discover which (if any) of the recognised STDs might actually cause these conditions, a key question is whether one particular such association is much stronger than the others. The present study is therefore only of women newly attending an STD clinic, and compares the prevalences of cytological abnormalities of the cervix among 415 women attending with genital warts, 135 with genital herpes, and 458 with trichomoniasis or gonorrhoea. Significantly more genital wart patients (8.1%) than trichomoniasis or gonorrhoea patients (1.9%) showed dyskaryotic changes (adjusted relative risk (RR) = 5.8 with 95% limits 2.5-13.5) at, or a few months before, first attendance, while no excess whatever was seen in women with genital herpes. Moreover, half the women had a subsequent smear (at an average of 3-4 years after first attendance) and, although the diagnosis at first attendance was not related to the onset rate of dyskaryotic changes observed in these subsequent smears, it was related to the onset rate of grade III cervical intra-epithelial neoplasia (CIN III), which was found in 7 previous genital wart patients, in 2 previous trichomonas patients, but in 0 previous genital herpes patients. Development of a low cost acoustic emission early warning system for slope instability
Slope failures world-wide cause many thousands of deaths each year and damage
built environment infrastructure. There is a clear need for low cost instrumentation that can provide
an early warning of slope instability to enable evacuation of vulnerable people and timely
repair and maintenance of critical infrastructure. Current instrumentation systems are either too
expensive for wide scale use or have technical limitations. An approach, Assessment of Landslides
using Acoustic Real-time Monitoring Systems (ALARMS), has been developed and
demonstrated through research. An approach has been developed using measurement of acoustic
emission generated during the onset of slope failure to provide quantitative information on slope
displacement rates. Research is in progress to develop low cost acoustic sensors. A unitary
acoustic emission slope displacement rate sensor has been designed and is being trialled in an
active landslide. Continuous monitored acoustic emission rates show comparable trends to displacement
rates measured using an inclinometer. Acoustic emission increase after rainfall events
and this is considered to indicate increased displacement rates
Molecular biogeography of Mediterranean and southern African disjunctions as exemplified by pollen beetles of the Meligethes planiusculus species-group and related taxa (Coleoptera: Nitidulidae; Meligethinae)
We investigated the apparent disjunction expressed in two related assemblages of species of the genus Meligethes, i.e. M. fruticola and its allies in the Cape region of South Africa and the M. planiusculus group in the Mediterranean region. We also inferred possible dynamics in the radiation of the Meligethes planiusculus complex within Macaronesia utilizing morphological, molecular and bionomical data, exploring potential historical and palaeoecological scenarios regulated by a molecular clock dating system. We reconstructed phylogenetic relationships of the M. planiusculus complex and of related Mediterranean (M. tristis), tropical (M. scotti) and southern African (M. chevrolati, M. conformis, and M. fruticola) species, using COI mitochondrial gene sequences. Phylogenetic reconstructions support an unambiguous distinction of two major clades grouping European-Mediterranean M. canariensis, M. isoplexidis andM. planiusculus specimens in one clade and the South-African specimens related to M. fruticola in another. Molecular markers suggested that the European-Mediterranean taxon M. tristis is unambiguously more distantly related to the partly sympatric M. canariensis, M. isoplexidis and M. planiusculus, than to the geographically isolated Southern African taxon, M. fruticola. However, morphological data revealed that M. tristis is more closely related to M. planiusculus and its allies while occupying a position internal to the M. planiusculus species group, but external to the M. planiusculus complex. Results of divergence estimation analyses suggest a splitting between ancestors of the European-Mediterranean species of the M. planiusculus complex and that of the African species M. fruticola at ~21-23 MYA. Molecular results also demonstrated that the remaining Afrotropical species are more related to the M. planiusculus and M. fruticola complexes than to M. tristis. This evidence clearly indicates that the Holarctic M. planiusculus group represents a paraphyletic assemblage with heterochronic Afrotropical origin. The
estimated times of divergence supports evidence from other researchers of an ‘Arid Corridor’, or of a ‘Central or Eastern High Africa Corridor’, which connected several times in the last twenty MY the European-Mediterranean and eastern/southern African areas, and facilitated species migration northwards and southwards. The dynamics of the Meligethes planiusculus complex radiation in Macaronesia apparently followed a contradictory biogeographical scenario than the sequence of events recently hypothesized for their host-plants (Echium, Boraginaceae)
