    Hemolysis in runners as evidenced by low serum haptoglobin: Implications for preflight monitoring of astronauts

    Hematological parameters and serum haptoglobin were examined in 21 male employees of the Kennedy Space Center who were at 3 levels of physical activity: 7 subjects regularly ran more than 40 km (25 miles) per week (Group I); 7 ran 13 to 24 km (8 to 15 miles) per week (II), and 7 were sedentary (III). Blood was drawn on a different day of the week for five weeks. Differences between day of the week, visit number, and activity level were examined. No differences were observed for day of week or visit number; thus mean values for each variable were calculated for each subject. Variables did not differ among groups. However, trends with level of training were observed in some critical variables. Hemoglobin (Hb) and hematocrit (Hct) conformed to a staircase effect with Group I (14.5 gm/dl and 41.3 percent) lower than Group III (15.1 gm/dl and 42.9 percent). Reticulocyte count was higher and haptoglobin levels lower in Group I (1.35% and 75.7 gm/dl) than Group III (.99 percent and 132.9 gm/dl), with haptoglobin for the high mileage Group I in the clinically abnormal range. Since haptoglobin binds free Hb following RBC destruction, these results suggest that intravascular hemolysis occurs in trained male runners. These results may have special meaning for astronauts training before long-duration spaceflights, since the further reduction in red blood cells which is reported to occur during spaceflight could become detrimental to their health and performance

    Diamonds on the Hat: Globular Clusters in The Sombrero Galaxy (M104)

    Images from the HST ACS are used to carry out a new photometric study of the globular clusters (GCs) in M104, the Sombrero galaxy. The primary focus of our study is the characteristic distribution function of linear sizes (SDF) of the GCs. We measure the effective radii for 652 clusters with PSF-convolved King and Wilson dynamical model fits. The SDF is remarkably similar to those measured for other large galaxies of all types, adding strong support to the view that it is a "universal" feature of globular cluster systems. We develop a more general interpretation of the size distribution function for globular clusters, proposing that the shape of the SDF that we see today for GCs is strongly influenced by the early rapid mass loss during their star forming stage, coupled with stochastic differences from cluster to cluster in the star formation efficiency (SFE) and their initial sizes. We find that the observed SDF shape can be accurately predicted by a simple model in which the protocluster clouds had characteristic sizes of 0.9±0.10.9 \pm 0.1 pc and SFEs of 0.3±0.070.3 \pm 0.07. The colors and luminosities of the M104 clusters show the clearly defined classic bimodal form. The blue sequence exhibits a mass/metallicity relation (MMR), following a scaling of heavy-element abundance with luminosity of Z∼L0.3Z \sim L^{0.3} very similar to what has been found in most giant elliptical galaxies. A quantitative self-enrichment model provides a good first-order match to the data for the same initial SFE and protocluster size that were required to explain the SDF. We also discuss various forms of the globular cluster Fundamental Plane (FP) of structural parameters, and show that useful tests of it can be extended to galaxies beyond the Local Group.Comment: In press for MNRA

    Are the hosts of VLBI selected radio-AGN different to those of radio-loud AGN?

    Recent studies have found that radio-AGN selected by radio-loudness show little difference in terms of their host galaxy properties when compared to non-AGN galaxies of similar stellar mass and redshift. Using new 1.4~GHz VLBI observations of the COSMOS field we find that approximately 49±8\pm8\% of high-mass (M >> 1010.5^{10.5} M⊙_{\odot}), high luminosity (L1.4_{1.4} >> 1024^{24} W~Hz−1^{-1}) radio-AGN possess a VLBI detected counterpart. These objects show no discernible bias towards specific stellar masses, redshifts or host properties other than what is shown by the radio-AGN population in general.     Cosmology with gravitationally lensed repeating Fast Radio Bursts

    High-precision cosmological probes have revealed a small but significant tension between the parameters measured with different techniques, among which there is one based on time delays in gravitational lenses. We discuss a new way of using time delays for cosmology, taking advantage of the extreme precision expected for lensed fast radio bursts (FRBs), which are short flashes of radio emission originating at cosmological distances. With coherent methods, the achievable precision is sufficient for measuring how time delays change over the months and years, which can also be interpreted as differential redshifts between the images. It turns out that uncertainties arising from the unknown mass distribution of gravitational lenses can be eliminated by combining time delays with their time derivatives. Other effects, most importantly relative proper motions, can be measured accurately and disentangled from the cosmological effects. With a mock sample of simulated lenses, we show that it may be possible to attain strong constraints on cosmological parameters. Finally, the lensed images can be used as galactic interferometer to resolve structures and motions of the burst sources with incredibly high resolution and help reveal their physical nature, which is currently unknown.Comment: minor revision, published in A&A, 15 page

    Discovery of Multi-Phase Cold Accretion in a Massive Galaxy at z=0.7

    We present detailed photo+collisional ionization models and kinematic models of the multi-phase absorbing gas, detected within the HST/COS, HST/STIS, and Keck/HIRES spectra of the background quasar TON 153, at 104 kpc along the projected minor axis of a star-forming spiral galaxy (z=0.6610). Complementary g'r'i'Ks photometry and stellar population models indicate that the host galaxy is dominated by a 4 Gyr stellar population with slightly greater than solar metallicity and has an estimated log(M*)=11 and a log(Mvir)=13. Photoionization models of the low ionization absorption, (MgI, SiII, MgII and CIII) which trace the bulk of the hydrogen, constrain the multi-component gas to be cold (logT=3.8-5.2) and metal poor (-1.68<[X/H]<-1.64). A lagging halo model reproduces the low ionization absorption kinematics, suggesting gas coupled to the disk angular momentum, consistent with cold accretion mode material in simulations. The CIV and OVI absorption is best modeled in a separate collisionally ionized metal-poor (-2.50<[X/H]<-1.93) warm phase with logT=5.3. Although their kinematics are consistent with a wind model, given the 2-2.5dex difference between the galaxy stellar metallicity and the absorption metallicity indicates the gas cannot arise from galactic winds. We discuss and conclude that although the quasar sight-line passes along the galaxy minor axis at projected distance of 0.3 virial radii, well inside its virial shock radius, the combination of the relative kinematics, temperatures, and relative metallicities indicated that the multi-phase absorbing gas arises from cold accretion around this massive galaxy.     A sample of low energy bursts from FRB 121102

    We present 41 bursts from the first repeating fast radio burst discovered (FRB 121102). A deep search has allowed us to probe unprecedentedly low burst energies during two consecutive observations (separated by one day) using the Arecibo telescope at 1.4 GHz. The bursts are generally detected in less than a third of the 580-MHz observing bandwidth, demonstrating that narrow-band FRB signals may be more common than previously thought. We show that the bursts are likely faint versions of previously reported multi-component bursts. There is a striking lack of bursts detected below 1.35 GHz and simultaneous VLA observations at 3 GHz did not detect any of the 41 bursts, but did detect one that was not seen with Arecibo, suggesting preferred radio emission frequencies that vary with epoch. A power law approximation of the cumulative distribution of burst energies yields an index −1.8±0.3-1.8\pm0.3 that is much steeper than the previously reported value of ∼−0.7\sim-0.7. The discrepancy may be evidence for a more complex energy distribution. We place constraints on the possibility that the associated persistent radio source is generated by the emission of many faint bursts (∼700\sim700 ms−1^{-1}). We do not see a connection between burst fluence and wait time. The distribution of wait times follows a log-normal distribution centered around ∼200\sim200 s; however, some bursts have wait times below 1 s and as short as 26 ms, which is consistent with previous reports of a bimodal distribution.     Recovery of zeta-chain expression and changes in spontaneous IL-10 production after PSA-based vaccines in patients with prostate cancer.

    Circulating T lymphocytes of patients with prostate cancer have been reported to have functional deficits, including low or absent zeta-chain expression. To determine whether these functional impairments could be reversed by prostate specific antigen-based vaccination therapy, 10 patients treated with recombinant human prostate specific antigen plus GM-CSF and eight others receiving prostate specific antigen plus oil emulsion in two pilot clinical trials were evaluated prior to and after vaccination for several immunologic end points, including zeta-chain expression and cytokine production by circulating T cells as well as the frequency of T cells able to respond to prostate specific antigen in ELISPOT assays. The flow cytometry assay for zeta-chain expression was standardized to allow for a reliable comparison of pre- vs post-vaccination samples. Prior to therapy, the patients were found to have significantly lower zeta-chain expression in circulating CD3(+) cells and a higher percentage of zeta-chain negative CD3(+) and CD4(+) cells than normal donors. The patients\u27 peripheral blood mononuclear cells spontaneously produced more IL-10 ex vivo than those of normal controls. After vaccination, recovery of zeta-chain expression was observed in 50% of patients in both clinical trials. Also, spontaneous IL-10 secretion by peripheral blood mononuclear cells decreased following immunotherapy in patients treated with prostate specific antigen and GM-CSF. The frequency of prostate specific antigen-reactive T cells was detectable in 7 out of 18 patients vs 4 out of 18 patients prior to vaccination. Only one of 18 patients was a clinical responder. The vaccine had stimulatory effects on the patients\u27 immune system, but post-vaccine immune recovery could not be correlated to progression-free survival in this small cohort of patients with prostate cancer

    In Vitro Demonstration of Delayed Hypersensitivity in Patients with Berylliosis

    To clarify immunopathological mechanisms in granulomatous hypersensitivity (GHR) to beryllium (Be), migration inhibitory factor (MIF) was assayed. Blood lymphocytes from three patients with GHR to Be and two normal persons were isolated and cultured with and without BeO or other antigens. Cell-free supernatants removed daily were dialyzed, lyophilized and assayed for MIF by measuring the area of migration of normal guinea pig peritoneal exudate cells out of capillary tubes within 24 hours after exposure to the supernatant. BeO added to sensitized lymphocytes produced supernatant that decreased migration, in contrast to supernatant from non-sensitized lymphocytes, indicating that BeO-sensitized lymphocytes cultured with Be elaborate a soluble factor, MIF, which correlates with delayed hypersensitivity and may play a role in granuloma formation. It may also prove useful in diagnosis of berylliosis

    Detection of Bursts from FRB 121102 with the Effelsberg 100-m Radio Telescope at 5 GHz and the Role of Scintillation

    FRB 121102, the only repeating fast radio burst (FRB) known to date, was discovered at 1.4 GHz and shortly after the discovery of its repeating nature, detected up to 2.4 GHz. Here we present three bursts detected with the 100-m Effelsberg radio telescope at 4.85 GHz. All three bursts exhibited frequency structure on broad and narrow frequency scales. Using an autocorrelation function analysis, we measured a characteristic bandwidth of the small-scale structure of 6.4±\pm1.6 MHz, which is consistent with the diffractive scintillation bandwidth for this line of sight through the Galactic interstellar medium (ISM) predicted by the NE2001 model. These were the only detections in a campaign totaling 22 hours in 10 observing epochs spanning five months. The observed burst detection rate within this observation was inconsistent with a Poisson process with a constant average occurrence rate; three bursts arrived in the final 0.3 hr of a 2 hr observation on 2016 August 20. We therefore observed a change in the rate of detectable bursts during this observation, and we argue that boosting by diffractive interstellar scintillations may have played a role in the detectability. Understanding whether changes in the detection rate of bursts from FRB 121102 observed at other radio frequencies and epochs are also a product of propagation effects, such as scintillation boosting by the Galactic ISM or plasma lensing in the host galaxy, or an intrinsic property of the burst emission will require further observations.Comment: Accepted to ApJ.
