Distribution and incidence of viruses in Irish seed potato crops

    Get PDF
peer-reviewedVirus diseases are of key importance in potato production and in particular for the production of disease-free potato seed. However, there is little known about the frequency and distribution of potato virus diseases in Ireland. Despite a large number of samples being tested each year, the data has never been collated either within or across years. Information from all known potato virus testing carried out in the years 2006–2012 by the Department of Agriculture Food and Marine was collated to give an indication of the distribution and incidence of potato virus in Ireland. It was found that there was significant variation between regions, varieties, years and seed classes. A definition of daily weather data suitable for aphid flight was developed, which accounted for a significant proportion of the variation in virus incidence between years. This use of weather data to predict virus risk could be developed to form the basis of an integrated pest management approach for aphid control in Irish potato crops

The use of implicit evidence for relevance feedback in web retrieval

In this paper we report on the application of two contrasting types of relevance feedback for web retrieval. We compare two systems; one using explicit relevance feedback (where searchers explicitly have to mark documents relevant) and one using implicit relevance feedback (where the system endeavours to estimate relevance by mining the searcher's interaction). The feedback is used to update the display according to the user's interaction. Our research focuses on the degree to which implicit evidence of document relevance can be substituted for explicit evidence. We examine the two variations in terms of both user opinion and search effectiveness

Quantum Monte Carlo study of the Ne atom and the Ne+ ion

We report all-electron and pseudopotential calculations of the ground-stateenergies of the neutral Ne atom and the Ne+ ion using the variational and diffusion quantum Monte Carlo (DMC) methods. We investigate different levels of Slater-Jastrow trial wave function: (i) using Hartree-Fock orbitals, (ii) using orbitals optimized within a Monte Carlo procedure in the presence of a Jastrow factor, and (iii) including backflow correlations in the wave function. Small reductions in the total energy are obtained by optimizing the orbitals, while more significant reductions are obtained by incorporating backflow correlations. We study the finite-time-step and fixed-node biases in the DMC energy and show that there is a strong tendency for these errors to cancel when the first ionization potential (IP) is calculated. DMC gives highly accurate values for the IP of Ne at all the levels of trial wave function that we have considered

    Caustic treatment of zircon sand

Interest in zirconium as a structural material for nuclear reactors has focused attention on producing this metal more cheaply in a high state of purity. The use of zirconium in nuclear reactors requires the removal of the 1 to 3 per cent hafnium associated with zirconium in all naturally occurring ores. To remove the hafnium and to realize the corrosion resistance of the pure metal require rather elaborate chemical processing. The chemistry of zirconium is complex and incompletely understood, but advances within the last few years have transformed zirconium from a laboratory curiosity to a potentially important metal

Progress of Diamond Digital Low Level RF

The first version of digital low level RF (DLLRF) for the Diamond Light Source storage ring and booster was developed with ALBA Synchrotron. Six systems have been built so far. Two of them are in routine operation controlling two normal conducting HOM-damped cavi-ties in the Diamond storage ring. A third system is being used for cavity testing in the RF test facility (RFTF). The fourth system is being commissioned to control the sec-ond normal conducting booster cavity. The fifth DLLRF system is being prepared for the third normal conducting RF cavity in the storage ring. A new DLLRF system based on SIS8300-KU with RTM has been developed and tested in the last few years. We are aiming to develop a common platform for the differ-ent RF systems in Diamond, including the storage ring, the booster and the Linac. It will also be our baseline design for the future Diamond II. Firmware, software and supporting hardware have been developed and tested. The Linac version with arbitrary waveform generator mode was tested successfully to generate flat top pulse from SLED in the high power test in the Linac. The stor-age ring version was also tested successfully in RFTF.Comment: Poster presented at LLRF Workshop 2022 (LLRF2022, arXiv:2208.13680

The influence of Harmonia axyridis morbidity on 2-Isopropyl-3-methoxypyrazine in 'Cabernet Sauvignon' wine

    Get PDF
Harmonia axyridis (Pallas) (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae; the Multicolored Asian Lady Beetle; MALB) is a vineyard pest in many winemaking regions of the world due to its ability to taint juice and wine (‘ladybug taint’) through excretion or extraction of 2-isopropyl-3-methoxypyrazine (IPMP) when the beetles are incorporated with the grapes at harvest. A common vineyard intervention is the use of insecticidal sprays and the resulting dead beetles are often incorporated in with the harvested fruit. The main objective of this study was to quantify the impact of dead MALB on IPMP concentrations in red wine. Duplicate 'Cabernet Sauvignon' wines were produced with the addition of 10 beetles·l-1 juice, added either live or at 1, 3, 7, or 60-days postmortem. A control wine with no added beetles was included. IPMP concentration was substantially higher in live-beetle wines, and decreased to base-line levels at approximately 6.5 days post-mortem. These results should assist in decisions on viticultural interventions, such as timing of insecticidal sprays, as well as the establishment of grape quality parameters.

Práticas discursivas e produção de sentido: apontamentos metodológicos para a análise de discursos sobre a saúde e a doença

    Get PDF
