Epizoic acoelomorph flatworms compete with their coral host for zooplankton

Satisfying nutrient requirement of corals is still a major constraint for maintaining corals in marine aquariums. Corals are polytrophic in nature. Heterotrophic feeding on zooplankton is one of the corals’ strategies to overcome nutrient deficiency. Artemia salina nauplii are commonly used as biocarriers for many fish larvae in aquaculture and can also serve as a biocarrier for coral in aquariums, provided coral acceptability, optimal feeding rate, and digestibility of the nauplii are well understood. Feeding rate and digestibility of coral fed on A. salina nauplii at 100, 2,000, 4,000, 6,000, and 10,000 ind. l-1 under light and dark conditions was assessed in this study. The maximum feeding rates of Galaxea fascicularis under light and dark conditions was 113.6 ind. polyp-1 h-1 and 76.9 ind. polyp-1 h-1, respectively. The daily feeding rates of G. fascicularis varies and depends on nauplii density. Light plays an important role in coral feeding. Nevertheless, the quantity of A. salina nauplii consumed by the coral under light and dark conditions was not significantly different (P > 0.05). A. salina nauplii are well accepted by G. fascicularis. Complete nauplii digestion was observed after 180 min. Digestibility of A. salina nauplii by G. fascicularis was positively correlated with digestion time

Parenting and child psychosocial problems:Effectiveness of parenting support in Preventive Child Healthcare

Psychosocial problems (e.g. aggressive behaviour, fear, anxiety) frequently occur in children and may lead to serious restrictions in daily functioning currently and in later life, and are the major cause of long-term work disability in young adults. Ineffective and inconsistent parenting styles may contribute to psychosocial problems in children. Our research showed that child psychosocial problems are associated with parenting stress and living in deprived areas, while internalizing problems of parents are associated with living in deprived areas, parental concerns and problem behaviour of their child. To investigate the effectiveness of Primary Care Triple P (PCTP), we conducted a multicenter, randomized, and controlled trial in Preventive Child Healthcare in the Netherlands. We compared PCTP with the usual care, and measured the effects immediately after treatment and after 6 and 12 months. Parents of children with mild psychosocial problems were invited to participate in this study. Our study showed positive effects of PCTP, but the intervention did not outperform the control condition. In general, a few outcomes improved in both treatment groups. Analyses based on imputed data showed similar results. Based on this underpowered study, we cannot conclude that PCTP is more effective than UC in preventive child healthcare. Though Primary Care Triple P did not outperform the usual care provided by PCH, it concerns a short and standardized intervention that suits the competences of CHPs and that showed no negative effects

A two-year study of Trichoptera caught on light in the Kaaistoep (The Netherlands).

A screen and light source were operated at a fixed place in the Kaaistoep, a nature reserve near the city of Tilburg (province Noord-Brabant, TheNetherlands). Some 75 nights per year have been spent catching insects by hand, and among these many caddis flies (Trichoptera). We collected and identifïed caddis flies during 2005 and 2006. In both years together more than 16,000 specimens were caught, comprising 52 species, including quite some rare and unexpected species. Flight periods could be constructed, which sometimes showed great difference between the two years. Weather conditions are likely to be responsible for these differences
