    Natural Metric for Quantum Information Theory

    We study in detail a very natural metric for quantum states. This new proposal has two basic ingredients: entropy and purification. The metric for two mixed states is defined as the square root of the entropy of the average of representative purifications of those states. Some basic properties are analyzed and its relation with other distances is investigated.     Effect of the microtubule-associated protein tau on dynamics of single-headed motor proteins KIF1A

    Intracellular transport based on molecular motors and its regulation are crucial to the functioning of cells. Filamentary tracks of the cells are abundantly decorated with nonmotile microtubule-associated proteins, such as tau. Motivated by experiments on kinesin-tau interactions [Dixit et al., Science 319, 1086 (2008)] we developed a stochastic model of interacting single-headed motor proteins KIF1A that also takes into account the interactions between motor proteins and tau molecules. Our model reproduces experimental observations and predicts significant effects of tau on bound time and run length which suggest an important role of tau in regulation of kinesin-based transport.publishedVersionFil: Sparacino, Javier.     The Wireless Experiment Box (WEB) was proposed to work with the International Space Station (ISS) External Wireless Communication (EWC) system to support high-definition video from the Dextre Pointing Package (DPP). DPP/WEB was a NASA GSFC proposed ExPRESS Logistics Carrier (ELC) payload designed to flight test an integrated suite of Autonomous Rendezvous and Docking (AR&D) technologies to enable a wide spectrum of future missions across NASA and other US Government agencies.     Plant phloem sterol content: forms, putative functions, and implications for phloem-feeding insects

    All eukaryotes contain sterols, which serve as structural components in cell membranes, and as precursors for important hormones. Plant vegetative tissues are known to contain mixtures of sterols, but very little is known about the sterol composition of phloem. Plants are food for many animals, but plant-feeding arthropods (including phloem-feeding insets) are unique among animals in that they have lost the ability to synthesize sterols, and must therefore acquire these essential nutrients from their food, or via endosymbionts. Our paper starts by providing a very brief overview of variation in plant sterol content, and how different sterols can affect insect herbivores, including those specializing on phloem. We then describe an experiment, where we bulk collected phloem sap exudate from bean and tobacco, and analyzed its sterol content. This approach revealed two significant observations concerning phloem sterols. First, the phloem exudate from each plant was found to contain sterols in three different fractions – free sterols, sterols conjugated to lipids (acylated), and sterols conjugated to carbohydrates (glycosylated). Second, for both plants, cholesterol was identified as the dominant sterol in each phloem exudate fraction; the remaining sterols in each fraction were a mixture of common phytosterols. We discuss our phloem exudate sterol profiles in a plant physiology/biochemistry context, and how it relates to the nutritional physiology/ecology of phloem-feeding insects. We close by proposing important next steps that will advance our knowledge concerning plant phloem sterol biology, and how phloem-sterol content might affect phloem-feeding insects.The open access fee for this work was funded through the Texas A&M University Open Access to Knowledge (OAK) Fund

    A multicenter experience with the Talent endovascular graft for the treatment of abdominal aortic aneurysms

    AbstractObjective: The Talent endovascular graft has been used in the treatment of abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAAs) in more than 13,000 patients worldwide. However, information regarding the results of its use has been limited. This report describes the experience with 368 patients with AAAs who underwent treatment at four medical centers as part of an investigator-sponsored investigational device exemption trial. Methods: Patients with AAAs were enrolled at four sites during a 32-month period from January 1999 to July 2001. All patients underwent treatment for infrarenal AAA with the Talent endovascular graft. Repair was performed with transrenal stent fixation under epidural (362/368 patients; 98.3%), local (4/368 patients; 1.1%), or general (2/368 patients; 0.5%) anesthesia. The average diameters were: maximum aortic aneurysm, 6.2 ± 1.2 cm; proximal aortic fixation site, 2.6 ± 0.4 cm; and distal iliac fixation site, 1.4 ± 0.6 cm. Bifurcated grafts were used in 276 of 366 patients (75%), aortouniiliac in 57 of 366 patients (16%), and tube aortoaortic in 33 of 366 patients (9%). Multiple comorbid medical conditions were present in all patients (average, 4.7 conditions/patient). The mean age was 75.8 years, and 85% of the patients were male. Follow-up period ranged from 2 to 33 months (mean, 7.3 months). Results: Endovascular graft deployment was accomplished in 366 of 368 patients. In the 263 patients followed for at least 6 months after endovascular repair, AAA diameter decreased by 5 mm or more in 83 patients (32%); diameter remained unchanged (change < 5 mm) in 157 patients (60%) and increased by 5 mm or more in 23 patients (8.7%). Major morbidity occurred in 46 of 368 patients (12.5%), and minor morbidity occurred in 31 of 368 (8.4%). The 30-day mortality rate was 1.9%. Secondary procedures were performed in 32 patients (8.7%). Late rupture occurred in two patients, and late deaths unrelated to AAA occurred in 32 patients (8.7%) during the follow-up period. The primary technical success rate for all patients was 93.4%. The 30-day primary procedural success rate was 73.3%. The 30-day secondary procedural success rate was significantly higher at 85.8%. Computed tomographic scan was performed within 1 month after surgery in 349 patients. An endoleak was present in 43 of 349 patients (12.3%). These endoleaks were comprised of 10 attachment site (type I; 2.9%), 31 retrograde side-branch (type II; 8.9%), and two transgraft (type III; 0.6%). Conclusion: These midterm findings show a high degree of technical and procedural success achieved in a patient population with extensive comorbid medical illnesses with low perioperative morbidity and mortality rates. Further follow-up study will be necessary to determine the effectiveness of the Talent endograft for the long-term treatment of AAA. (J Vasc Surg 2002;35:1123-8.

    The use of a physiologically based pharmacokinetic model to evaluate deconvolution measurements of systemic absorption

    BACKGROUND: An unknown input function can be determined by deconvolution using the systemic bolus input function (r) determined using an experimental input of duration ranging from a few seconds to many minutes. The quantitative relation between the duration of the input and the accuracy of r is unknown. Although a large number of deconvolution procedures have been described, these routines are not available in a convenient software package. METHODS: Four deconvolution methods are implemented in a new, user-friendly software program (PKQuest, ). Three of these methods are characterized by input parameters that are adjusted by the user to provide the "best" fit. A new approach is used to determine these parameters, based on the assumption that the input can be approximated by a gamma distribution. Deconvolution methodologies are evaluated using data generated from a physiologically based pharmacokinetic model (PBPK). RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS: The 11-compartment PBPK model is accurately described by either a 2 or 3-exponential function, depending on whether or not there is significant tissue binding. For an accurate estimate of r the first venous sample should be at or before the end of the constant infusion and a long (10 minute) constant infusion is preferable to a bolus injection. For noisy data, a gamma distribution deconvolution provides the best result if the input has the form of a gamma distribution. For other input functions, good results are obtained using deconvolution methods based on modeling the input with either a B-spline or uniform dense set of time points
