The urban space in Łódź as an archive. Material traces of Construction in Process

    Get PDF
At the end of October and at the beginning of November 1981 (26.10 – 15.11.1981) Łódź hosted the first Construction in Process. Although it was held outside the official structures and institutional art circulation, it became an important event and an independent artistic undertaking on the international scale. Łódź was then visited by eminent artists bound with the avant-garde artistic trends of those days like Sol LeWitt, Richard Serra, Richard Nonas, Dennis Oppenheim or David Rabinowitch. Artistic interventions and activities frequently took place outside the buildings. Traits that have remained enrich public space and, at the same time, testify to the events from the past. Therefore, Łódź can be perceived as a sort of an archive of pieces of art and cultural artefacts in public space. The “archival collection” is made up of works created during the following Łódź editions of Construction in Process

Characteristics of the Eliashberg formalism on the example of high-pressure superconducting state in phosphor

The work describes the properties of the high-pressure superconducting state in phosphor: p{20,30,40,70}p\in\{20, 30, 40, 70\} GPa. The calculations were performed in the framework of the Eliashberg formalism, which is the natural generalization of the BCS theory. The exceptional attention was paid to the accurate presentation of the used analysis scheme. With respect to the superconducting state in phosphor it was shown that: (i) the observed not-high values of the critical temperature ([TC]p=30GPamax=8.45\left[T_{C}\right]_{p=30{\rm GPa}}^{\rm max}=8.45 K) result not only from the low values of the electron - phonon coupling constant, but also from the very strong depairing Coulomb interactions, (ii) the inconsiderable strong - coupling and retardation effects force the dimensionless ratios RΔR_{\Delta}, RCR_{C}, and RHR_{H} - related to the critical temperature, the order parameter, the specific heat and the thermodynamic critical field - to take the values close to the BCS predictions.Comment: 6 pages, 6 figure

The industrial heritage and post-industrial urban identity: the case of Lodz in Poland

This article examines how the concept of redefinition of city identity is connected and merges with activities concerning adaptive reuse of the 19th-century post-industrial architectural heritage of Lodz, one of largest Polish cities

Identification of Microbial and Gaseous Contaminants in Poultry Farms and Developing Methods for Contamination Prevention at the Source

    Get PDF
Microbial concentrations in poultry houses increase over time and contribute to the sick building syndrome. Very high and often logarithmic growth rates are reported for aerobic mesophilic bacteria, which account for the majority of known pathogenic bacteria. Bioaerosols suspended in air also contain mold spores and mold fragments, mostly fungi of various genera, including pathogenic fungi that produce mycotoxins. Microbiological mineralization of organic compounds, processes that involve litter and fecal microbes, produces toxic gases, including ammonia, carbon dioxide (CO2), as well as volatile toxic and aroma compounds. The above threats have led to the initiation of various measures to limit pollution at the source, including legal regulations and methods aiming to neutralize the adverse effects of pollution (dietary, production, and hygiene standards). Hygienic methods are recommended as alternative methods of reducing contamination in poultry houses. Essential oil mist, organic and organic-mineral biofilters, litter additives, such as aluminosilicates (bentonite, vermiculite, halloysite), microbiological and disinfecting preparations, herbal extracts, and calcium compounds may improve hygiene standards in poultry farms

    Introduction

The present volume of Scripta Classica is a collection of miscellaneous articles in which various aspects of the ancient world and its impact on modern times are analysed. This time the thematic varietas consists of texts about ancient history, culture and tradition and their reception. The publication also contains translations of Latin and Greek texts that have not been edited in Polish yet. The Greek section starts with the translation of Plutarch’s diatribe Περὶ τοῦ πότερον τὰ ψυχῆς ἢ τὰ σώματος πάθη χείρονα (Animine an corporis affectiones sint peiores) and an article about the key role of dreams in ancient medicine. The aim of the article is to show different dreams in everyday life. In the Latin section readers can find translations of several ancient passages. The first is a fragment of Silius Italicus’ Punica, describing the events during the Battle of the Metaurus. The second is a fragment of Arnobius’ Adversus Nationes about Attis’ life and death. All the translations are supplemented with an extensive commentary. Additionally, in this part there is also an article about trickery vocabulary in Florus’ Epitome de Tito Livio. It contains not only a kind of catalogue of terms connected with deceit, such as dolus, fraus and consilium, but also a description of historical and cultural facts related to the topic. A discussion of a Priape, a graphic novel by Nicolas Presl, ends the essays in this volume. We sincerely hope that these articles will appeal to our readers

The effects of sensory integration technique on equilibrium processes in children after prenatal exposure to alcohol

ABSTRACTBackground:The objective of the study was evaluation of sensory integration therapyeffectiveness in children after prenatal exposure to alcohol, on the example of equilibriumprocesses. Material and methods: The study was conducted in 2012 at the Centre ofAdvanced Physiotherapy in Kielce, and covered a group of 20 children aged 4-5 who had ahistory of prenatal exposure to alcohol. The children systematically participated in a one-hourSI therapy session, once a week for the period of 6 months. Results: While evaluating theequilibrium system, 5 trials with clinical observations were performed according to Ayres: theSchilder test, dynamic and static balance, gravitational uncertainty, and postrotary nystagmus. The high effectiveness of SI therapy was confirmed in children subjected to prenatal alcoholexposure based on the example of the equilibrium system. The positive effects of therapywere proved for all the tests applied: the Schilder test (p<0.001), dynamic balance (p<0.001),static balance (p<0.001), gravitational insecurity (p<0.001), and postrotary nystagmus(p<0.05). Conclusions: The sensory integration technique exerts a beneficial effect on thebalance functions of children after prenatal exposure to alcohol
