Effect of soybean:water ratio and heat treatment on yield and protein quality of soymilk
The soymilk elaboration process was optimized, with the purpose of obtaining a product with higher protein extraction and better protein quality. Different soybean:water ratios and different processes of heating were utilized for soymilk elaboration. Through both biochemical and chemical analysis, it was verified that soymilk extracted with a 1:10 soybean:water ratio and autoclaved (121 ºC) during 5 minutes, showed a higher protein extraction, no trypsin-inhibitor activity, a good digestibility of protein in vitro (86.41%), and high value of available methionine (1.22 g/16 g N)
Unpredictability in seasonal infectious diseases spread
In this work, we study the unpredictability of seasonal infectious diseases
considering a SEIRS model with seasonal forcing. To investigate the dynamical
behaviour, we compute bifurcation diagrams type hysteresis and their respective
Lyapunov exponents. Our results from bifurcations and the largest Lyapunov
exponent show bistable dynamics for all the parameters of the model. Choosing
the inverse of latent period as control parameter, over 70% of the interval
comprises the coexistence of periodic and chaotic attractors, bistable
dynamics. Despite the competition between these attractors, the chaotic ones
are preferred. The bistability occurs in two wide regions. One of these regions
is limited by periodic attractors, while periodic and chaotic attractors bound
the other. As the boundary of the second bistable region is composed of
periodic and chaotic attractors, it is possible to interpret these critical
points as tipping points. In other words, depending on the latent period, a
periodic attractor (predictability) can evolve to a chaotic attractor
(unpredictability). Therefore, we show that unpredictability is associated with
bistable dynamics preferably chaotic, and, furthermore, there is a tipping
point associated with unpredictable dynamics
Geographic Coincidence of Increased Malaria Transmission Hazard and Vulnerability Occurring at the Periphery of two Tanzanian Villages.
The goal of malaria elimination necessitates an improved understanding of any fine-scale geographic variations in transmission risk so that complementary vector control tools can be integrated into current vector control programmes as supplementary measures that are spatially targeted to maximize impact upon residual transmission. This study examines the distribution of host-seeking malaria vectors at households within two villages in rural Tanzania. Host-seeking mosquitoes were sampled from 72 randomly selected households in two villages on a monthly basis throughout 2008 using CDC light-traps placed beside occupied nets. Spatial autocorrelation in the dataset was examined using the Moran's I statistic and the location of any clusters was identified using the Getis-Ord Gi* statistic. Statistical associations between the household characteristics and clusters of mosquitoes were assessed using a generalized linear model for each species. For both Anopheles gambiae sensu lato and Anopheles funestus, the density of host-seeking females was spatially autocorrelated, or clustered. For both species, houses with low densities were clustered in the semi-urban village centre while houses with high densities were clustered in the periphery of the villages. Clusters of houses with low or high densities of An. gambiae s.l. were influenced by the number of residents in nearby houses. The occurrence of high-density clusters of An. gambiae s.l. was associated with lower elevations while An. funestus was also associated with higher elevations. Distance from the village centre was also positively correlated with the number of household occupants and having houses constructed with open eaves. The results of the current study highlight that complementary vector control tools could be most effectively targeted to the periphery of villages where the households potentially have a higher hazard (mosquito densities) and vulnerability (open eaves and larger households) to malaria infection
Attenuation of motor deficits by hydroethanolic extract of Poincianella pyramidalis in a Parkinson's disease model
The present study aimed to evaluate the possible neuroprotective effect of the hydroethanolic extract of Poincianella pyramidalis (EFIPp) (Tul.) L. P. Queiroz (Fabaceae), an endemic plant found in Northeastern Brazil, commonly used in folk medicine, on the motor deficits induced by repeated treatment with reserpine (RES) in rats. Adult male Wistar rats received 10 s.c. injections of 0.1 mg/kg RES or vehicle (VR), every 48 h, and daily i.p. injections daily of HEPp (25 mg/kg) or vehicle (VE). Throughout treatment, catalepsy behavior and oral movements were scored. After behavioral tests, superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) activities were evaluated in the prefrontal cortex, hippocampus and striatum. RES treatment induced a progressive increase of catalepsy time in the treated group compared to control groups starting at day 15. RES also increased the number of vacuous chewing movements, tongue protrusions and duration of facial twitching. Treatment with HEPp attenuated the motor deficit in the catalepsy test and delayed the onset of oral movements induced by RES. No significant changes were observed in the antioxidant assay. Taken together, these results show a beneficial effect of HEPp on motor deficits induced by reserpine, suggesting a neuroprotective effect in a rat model of PD.Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Cientifico e Tecnologico (CNPq)Coordenacao de Aperfeicoamento de Pessoal de Nivel Superior (CAPES)Fundação de Apoio a Pesquisa e a Inovação Tecnologica do Estado de Sergipe (FAPITEC)Pro-reitoria de Pesquisa da Universidade Federal de Sergipe (POSGRAP/UFS)Univ Fed Sergipe, Dept Physiol, Sao Cristovao, SE, BrazilUniv Massachusetts, Neurosci & Behav Program, Amherst, MA 01003 USAMinist Educ, CAPES Fdn, BR-70040020 Brasilia, DF, BrazilUniv Fed Sao Paulo, Dept Biosci, Santos, SP, BrazilUniv Fed Sao Paulo, Dept Pharmacol, Sao Paulo, SP, BrazilUniv Fed Sergipe, Dept Biosci, Itabaiana, SE, BrazilUniv Fed Sao Paulo, Dept Biosci, Santos, SP, BrazilUniv Fed Sao Paulo, Dept Pharmacol, Sao Paulo, SP, BrazilWeb of Scienc
Measurement of the Boson Mass
A measurement of the mass of the boson is presented based on a sample of
5982 decays observed in collisions at
= 1.8~TeV with the D\O\ detector during the 1992--1993 run. From a
fit to the transverse mass spectrum, combined with measurements of the
boson mass, the boson mass is measured to be .Comment: 12 pages, LaTex, style Revtex, including 3 postscript figures

Measurement of the Top Quark Mass Using Dilepton Events
The D0 collaboration has performed a measurement of the top quark mass based
on six candidate events for the process t tbar -> b W+ bbar W-, where the W
bosons decay to e nu or mu nu. This sample was collected during an exposure of
the D0 detector to an integrated luminosity of 125 pb^-1 of sqrt(s)=1.8 TeV
p-pbar collisions. We obtain mt = 168.4 +- 12.3 (stat) +- 3.7 (sys) GeV/c^2,
consistent with the measurement obtained using single-lepton events.
Combination of the single-lepton and dilepton results yields mt = 172.0 +- 7.5
GeV/c^2.Comment: 12 pages, 3 figure
Direct Measurement of the Top Quark Mass at D0
We determine the top quark mass m_t using t-tbar pairs produced in the D0
detector by \sqrt{s} = 1.8 TeV p-pbar collisions in a 125 pb^-1 exposure at the
Fermilab Tevatron. We make a two constraint fit to m_t in t-tbar -> b W^+bbar
W^- final states with one W boson decaying to q-qbar and the other to e-nu or
mu-nu. Likelihood fits to the data yield m_t(l+jets) = 173.3 +- 5.6 (stat) +-
5.5 (syst) GeV/c^2. When this result is combined with an analysis of events in
which both W bosons decay into leptons, we obtain m_t = 172.1 +- 5.2 (stat) +-
4.9 (syst) GeV/c^2. An alternate analysis, using three constraint fits to fixed
top quark masses, gives m_t(l+jets) = 176.0 +- 7.9 (stat) +- 4.8 (syst)
GeV/C^2, consistent with the above result. Studies of kinematic distributions
of the top quark candidates are also presented.Comment: 43 pages, 53 figures, 33 tables. RevTeX. Submitted to Phys. Rev.
Search for First Generation Scalar Leptoquark Pairs in ppbar Collisions at sqrt(s)=1.8 TeV
We have searched for first generation scalar leptoquark (LQ) pairs in the
enu+jets channel using ppbar collider data (integrated luminosity= 115 pb^-1)
collected by the DZero experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron during 1992-96. The
analysis yields no candidate events. We combine the results with those from the
ee+jets and nunu+jets channels to obtain 95% confidence level (CL) upper limits
on the LQ pair production cross section as a function of mass and of beta, the
branching fraction to a charged lepton. Comparing with the next-to-leading
order theory, we set 95% CL lower limits on the LQ mass of 225, 204, and 79
GeV/c^2 for beta=1, 1/2, and 0, respectively.Comment: 14 pages, 4 figures, submitted to Physical Review Letters Replaced to
