Critical thinking, empathy and problem solving using a modern board game: A learning experience valued by physical therapy students
This study aimed at understanding how physical therapy students
recognize a modern board game experience as an opportunity to
train socioemotional skills. Thirteen physical therapy students participated in a learning experience using the Magic Maze board
game and were assessed in terms of critical thinking, empathy, and
problem-solving perceived experience. The facilitator’s perceptions
were also registered. Students showed to be goal oriented focusing on choosing different solutions and reflecting critically on the
most suitable one. Magic Maze was classified as a relevant learning

Publisher Copyright: © 2022 The Author(s)Staphylococcus aureus is an opportunistic pathogen and one of the most frequent causes for community acquired and nosocomial bacterial infections. Even so, its energy metabolism is still under explored and its respiratory enzymes have been vastly overlooked. In this work, we unveil the dihydroorotate:quinone oxidoreductase (DHOQO) from S. aureus, the first example of a DHOQO from a Gram-positive organism. This protein was shown to be a FMN containing menaquinone reducing enzyme, presenting a Michaelis-Menten behaviour towards the two substrates, which was inhibited by Brequinar, Leflunomide, Lapachol, HQNO, Atovaquone and TFFA with different degrees of effectiveness. Deletion of the DHOQO coding gene (Δdhoqo) led to lower bacterial growth rates, and effected in cell morphology and metabolism, most importantly in the pyrimidine biosynthesis, here systematized for S. aureus MW2 for the first time. This work unveils the existence of a functional DHOQO in the respiratory chain of the pathogenic bacterium S. aureus, enlarging the understanding of its energy metabolism.publishersversionpublishe
Drosophila Genes That Affect Meiosis Duration Are among the Meiosis Related Genes That Are More Often Found Duplicated
Using a phylogenetic approach, the examination of 33 meiosis/meiosis-related genes in 12 Drosophila species, revealed nine independent gene duplications, involving the genes cav, mre11, meiS332, polo and mtrm. Evidence is provided that at least eight out of the nine gene duplicates are functional. Therefore, the rate at which Drosophila meiosis/meiosis-related genes are duplicated and retained is estimated to be 0.0012 per gene per million years, a value that is similar to the average for all Drosophila genes. It should be noted that by using a phylogenetic approach the confounding effect of concerted evolution, that is known to lead to overestimation of the duplication and retention rate, is avoided. This is an important issue, since even in our moderate size sample, evidence for long-term concerted evolution (lasting for more than 30 million years) was found for the meiS332 gene pair in species of the Drosophila subgenus. Most striking, in contrast to theoretical expectations, is the finding that genes that encode proteins that must follow a close stoichiometric balance, such as polo, mtrm and meiS332 have been found duplicated. The duplicated genes may be examples of gene neofunctionalization. It is speculated that meiosis duration may be a trait that is under selection in Drosophila and that it has different optimal values in different species
Empathy, creativity, and feelings using a modern board game: A learning experience valued by physiotherapy students
This study aimed at understanding how physiotherapy students perceive a modern board game experience as an opportunity to train socioemotional skills. Twenty physiotherapy students participated in a learning experience using the Telestration game and were assessed in terms of: game-based self-perceived experience; game’s serious dimension. The facilitator’s perceptionswere also accounted for. Students learned creative expression skills (85% students characterized a true/strong creative experience; 90% expressed a strong feeling of “freedom of experimentation”) and were considered immersed and emotionally involved (significant association between understanding game’s serious purposes and emotional relationship
with experience, p-value=0.01). Telestration was classified as a relevant learning method for other serious purposes (>50% students revealed inttention to use Telestration for other serious purposes). Therefore, physiotherapy students self-rated this experience with the Telestration game as significant for learning relevant socioemotional skills. Additionally, facilitator’s perceptions confirmed that they were perfectly immersed and emotionally involved in this learning experience. Future studies in this topic are needed, including larger samples and students from different health courses. Non-indigenous species in Portuguese coastal areas, coastal lagoons, estuaries and islands
Trends in abundance, temporal occurrence and spatial distribution of marine and brackish nonindigenous
species (NIS) are part of the indicators to assess the compliance of Good Environmental
Status in the European Marine Strategy Framework Directive (EU-MSFD). European-wide regional and
national databases for NIS will be useful for the implementation of the EU-MSFD but there are still spatial
gaps for some regions and taxonomic groups. In 2009, Portugal was among the countries with the lowest
reported numbers of NIS in Europe and a national online database on NIS was not available. This study
provides an updated list of NIS registered in Portuguese coastal and estuarine waters, including mainland
Portugal and the Azores and Madeira archipelagos. A list of 133 NIS was cataloged, most of which
recorded in the last three decades, showing that this area of the North Atlantic is no less prone to introductions
than neighboring areas. Most NIS reported in the current inventory are native in the Indo-
Pacific region. Fouling and ballast water are the most likely introduction vectors of NIS in the studied
area but shipping routes connecting to the NIS native regions are rare, indicating that most species are
secondary introductions. The high number of NIS in the Azores and Madeira islands indicates that this
ecosystem type seems to be more susceptible to invasions but these preliminary results might be biased
by a higher number of studies and knowledge on the NIS occurrence on the islands
