The fashion industry, which includes fashion accessories, is a globalized industry with mass production and consumption. The fast obsolescence of fashion accessories has led to a significant environmental impact. In the last decade, however, there has been an increase in fashion brands' sensitivity to sustainable concerns, not only environmental but also social, and many have defined new strategies with a focus on sustainability. This new paradigm emerges based on the conscious consumption movement and focuses on the development of new differentiating factors, with accessory brands exploring sustainable concepts of product creation. This study investigates and explores issues related to sustainable fashion and conscious consumption, consumers, their characteristics and their influence on brand decisions and the impact of the new competitive context on fashion accessories and their attributes. It also seeks to contribute to the characterization of the slow fashion movement, often associated with sustainable design and conscious consumption, and to establish the attributes that define sustainable fashion accessories

Social prescribing (SP) is an approach that promotes the use of local non-clinical activities by people. The referral is usually made by primary health-care professionals, in a process wherein local providers play a pivotal role. The main objective of this study was to identify domains of intervention and evidence about the effectiveness of SP programs regarding health-related outcomes. A systematic literature review was carried out following Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. A literature search was conducted in PubMed, CINHAL, and SCOPUS. Inclusion criteria of the reviewed papers were as follows: (i) effectiveness studies of interventions designated as SP or interventions entailing SP conceptual components; (ii) interventions with adults. Quality assessment was performed with the Cochrane tool for assessing risk of bias in randomized trials; an assessment tool developed by the US National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute was applied to observational studies. Overall, 13 articles were included for analysis, with a total of 4603 patients. Although three studies comprised a control group, only two followed a randomized controlled trials (RCT) design. Nine principal domains of intervention within SP were identified, with three categories of outcome measures: Physical and psychological wellbeing; Health behaviors and self-efficacy; and Health care resources end economic evaluation. SP is an emergent and promising health-care intervention, and it has been used to promote different health behaviors. Evidence of SP effectiveness on patient’s health and wellbeing is not strong. Further research is needed for understanding how SP can be applied efficiently.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Co-activation of upper limb muscles during reaching in post-stroke subjects: An analysis of the contralesional and ipsilesional limbs

The purpose of this study was to analyze the change in antagonist co-activation ratio of upper-limb muscle pairs, during the reaching movement, of both ipsilesional and contralesional limbs of post-stroke subjects. Nine healthy and nine post-stroke subjects were instructed to reach and grasp a target, placed in the sagittal and scapular planes of movement. Surface EMG was recorded from postural control and movement related muscles. Reaching movement was divided in two sub-phases, according to proximal postural control versus movement control demands, during which antagonist co-activation ratios were calculated for the muscle pairs LD/PM, PD/AD, TRIlat/BB and TRIlat/BR. Post-stroke's ipsilesional limb presented lower co-activation in muscles with an important role in postural control (LD/PM), comparing to the healthy subjects during the first sub-phase, when the movement was performed in the sagittal plane (p<0.05). Conversely, the post-stroke's contralesional limb showed in general an increased co-activation ratio in muscles related to movement control, comparing to the healthy subjects. Our findings demonstrate that, in post-stroke subjects, the reaching movement performed with the ipsilesional upper limb seems to show co-activation impairments in muscle pairs associated to postural control, whereas the contralesional upper limb seems to have signs of impairment of muscle pairs related to movement.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Influenza virus is a huge financial and social burden for health care systems over the world. Currently, traditionalapproaches are not effective in the fight of the epidemy and new alternatives like DNA vaccines have been developed. However, the downstream process of DNA vaccines is a constant challenge in the biotechnology industry. Cryogels has several advantages over traditional supports and have been tested as stationary phase in chromatographic separations. In this work, a method based on poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) cryogel was used to purify the plasmid NTC7482-41H-VA2 HA, which express the Influenza hemagglutinin gene. For this purpose, the cryogel was synthesized by cryo-polymerization of 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate and characterized by scanning electron microscopy. The purification of supercoiled isoform of the plasmid NTC7482-41H-VA2 HA from a clarified lysate sample was achieved in a two-step experiment using NaCl and the dynamic binding capacity of pHEMA cryogel was determined. The assessment of DNA vaccine allowed to conclude that the level of contaminants such as proteins, genomic DNA, RNA and endotoxins are in accordance with FDA agency.Project POCI-01-0145-FEDER-007491info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Demographic, clinical characteristics and cardiovascular disease burden in a Portuguese cohort of older chronic kidney disease patients

ABSTRACT Introduction: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is an independent risk factor for several unfavorable outcomes including cardiovascular disease (CVD), particularly in the elderly, who represent the most rapidly growing segment of the end-stage kidney disease (ESKD) population. Portugal has the highest European unadjusted incidence and prevalence rates of ESKD. In 2012, we started to follow a cohort of elderly CKD patients, we describe their baseline characteristics, risk profile, and cardiovascular disease burden. Methods: All CKD patients aged 65 years and older referred to our department during 2012 were enrolled. Baseline data included: demographic, CKD stage, medication, comorbid conditions. Estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) was calculated by the CKD-EPI formula. Results: A total of 416 patients, 50% referred by primary care physicians, aged 77 ± 7 years, 52% male, with a median eGFR of 32 mL/min/1.73m2 participated in the study. Fifty percent had diabetes (DM), 85% dyslipidemia, 96% hypertension; 26% were current/former smokers, and 24% had a body mass index > 30 kg/m2. The prevalence of CVD was 62% and higher in stage 4-5 patients; in diabetics, it gradually increased with CKD progression (stage 3a < stage 3b < stage 4-5) (39, 58, 82%; p < 0.001). Conclusions: At baseline, our CKD elderly cohort had a higher burden of CVD. The prevalence of CVD was greater than in other European CKD cohorts. Lower level of eGFR was associated with a greater burden of CVD and was more pronounced in diabetics, highlighting the importance of strategically targeting cardiovascular risk reduction in these patients

First screening of biocides, persistent organic pollutants, pharmaceutical and personal care products in Antarctic phytoplankton from Deception Island by FT-ICR-MS

    No full text
In recent years, the Antarctic territory has seen a rise in the number of tourists and scientists. This has led to an increase in the anthropogenic footprint in Antarctic ecosystems, namely in terms of emerging contaminants, such as Biocides, Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) as well as Pharmaceutical and Personal Care Products (PPCPs). Yet scarce information on the presence of these emerging contaminants is available for trophic compartments, especially the phytoplankton community. Using high resolution Fourier-transform ion cyclotron-resonance mass spectrometry (FT-ICR-MS), an untargeted screening of the metabolome of the phytoplankton community was performed. Seventy different contaminant compounds were found to be present in phytoplankton collected at two sites in Port Foster Bay at Deception Island. These emerging contaminants included 1 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH), 10 biocides (acaricides, fungicides, herbicides, insecticides and nematicides), 11 POPs (flame retardants, paints and dyes, polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB), phthalates and plastic components), 5 PCPs (cosmetic, detergents and dietary compounds), 40 pharmaceutical compounds and 3 illicit drugs. Pharmaceutical compounds were, by far, the largest group of emerging contaminants found in phytoplankton cells (anticonvulsants, antihypertensives and beta-blockers, antibiotics, analgesic and anti-inflammatory drugs). The detection of several of these potentially toxic compounds at the basis of the marine food web has potentially severe impacts for the whole ecosystem trophic structure. Additionally, the present findings also point out that the guidelines proposed by the Antarctic Treaty and Protocol on Environmental Protection to the Antarctic Treaty should be revisited to avoid the proliferation of these and other PPCPs in such sensitive environments.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
