    Determination of the combined vibrational and acoustic emission signature of a wind turbine gearbox and generator shaft in service as a pre-requisite for effective condition monitoring

Copyright @ 2013 Elsevier B.V.A review of current progress in Condition Monitoring (CM) of wind turbine gearboxes and generators is presented, as an input to the design of a new continuous CM system with automated warnings based on a combination of vibrational and Acoustic Emission (AE) analysis. For wind turbines, existing reportage on vibrational monitoring is restricted to a few case histories whilst data on AE is even scarcer. In contrast, this paper presents combined vibration and AE monitoring performed over a continuous period of 5 days on a wind turbine. The vibrational and AE signatures for a healthy wind turbine gearbox and generator were obtained as a function of wind speed and turbine power, for the full normal range of these operational variables. i.e. 5–25 m/s and 0–300 kW respectively. The signatures have been determined as a vital pre-requisite for the identification of abnormal signatures attributable to shaft and gearbox defects. Worst-case standard deviations have been calculated for the sensor data. These standard deviations determine the minimum defect signal that could be detected within the defined time interval without false alarms in an automated warning system.UK Northern Wind Innovation Program NWI

    International audiencePlusieurs études multidisciplinaires ont été effectuées sur les couches riches en matière organique (MO) de la formation Bahloul. Nos études de terrain et les synthèses géologiques, géochimiques, isotopiques et minéralogiques disponibles ont permis d'apporter des précisions nouvelles d'ordre paléogéographique et paléocéanographique. Ces données ont contribué à l'élaboration d'un modèle de dépôt sous une zone à minimum d'oxygène (ZMO) dans des bassins marins profonds et subsidents de type bathyal, où se sont accumulées et préservées d'importantes quantités de MO (jusqu'à 18,7 % de COT). Le présent modèle a permis la corrélation de la formation Bahloul à d'autres coupes de référence à l'échelle globale, ce qui permet de mettre en évidence que le d13C mesuré sur MO serait un meilleur outil de corrélation que le d13C mesuré sur carbonates pour reconnaître la limite Cénomanien/Turonien

    A survey on energy efficient techniques in wireless sensor networks

    International audienceThe myriad of potential applications supported by wireless sensor networks (WSNs) has generated much interest from the research community. Various applications range from small size low industrial monitoring to large scale energy constrained environmental monitoring. In all cases, an operational network is required to fulfill the application missions. In addition, energy consumption of nodes is a great challenge in order to maximize network lifetime. Unlike other networks, it can be hazardous, very expensive or even impossible to charge or replace exhausted batteries due to the hostile nature of environment. Researchers are invited to design energy efficient protocols while achieving the desired network operations. This paper focuses on different techniques to reduce the consumption of the limited energy budget of sensor nodes. After having identified the reasons of energy waste in WSNs, we classify energy efficient techniques into five classes, namely data reduction, control reduction, energy efficient routing, duty cycling and topology control. We then detail each of them, presenting subdivisions and giving many examples. We conclude by a recapitulative table

    Determinants of Faculty-Student Engagement for Southeast Asian Men in Community College: An Exploratory Analysis

    The purpose of this study was to examine determinants of faculty-student engagement for Southeast Asian men in community colleges. Using data derived from the Community College Survey of Men (CCSM), this study investigated faculty-student engagement for 140 Southeast Asian men attending community colleges in the United States. Five groupings of predictor variables were examined: background/defining, campus ethos, environmental, academic, and non-cognitive factors. Backwards multiple linear regression was employed to identify variables with significant contributions to the model. The final model converged on the eighth iteration and significantly predicted the outcome, accounting for 38% of the variance in faculty-student engagement. Findings indicated that faculty validation, stressful life events, action control, and use of academic advising and career counseling services were significant predictors of faculty-student engagement. Implications for community college practice and research are discussed

    MODESA: An optimized multichannel slot assignment for raw data convergecast in wireless sensor networks

    International audienceIn aerospace applications, wireless sensor networks (WSNs) collect data from sensor nodes towards a sink in a multi-hop convergecast structure. The throughput requirement of these applications is difficult to meet with a single wireless channel. That is why, in this paper, we focus on a multichannel time slot assignment that minimizes the data gathering cycle. We first formalize the problem as a linear program and compute the optimal time needed for a raw data convergecast in various multichannel topologies. These optimal times apply to sinks equipped with one or several radio interfaces. We then propose our algorithm called MODESA and prove its optimality in various multichannel topologies. We evaluate its performances in terms of number of slots, maximum buffer size and number of active/sleep switches per node.
