Improved dynamic object detection within evidential grids framework

    Get PDF
International audienceThe deployment of autonomous robots/vehicles is increasing in several domains. To perform tasks properly, a robot must have a good perception about its environment while detecting dynamic obstacles. Recently, evidential grids have attracted more interest for environment perception since they permit more effective uncertainty handling. The latest studies on evidential grids relied on the use of thresholds for information management e.g. the use of a threshold, for the conflict characterized by the mass of empty set, in order to detect dynamic objects. Nevertheless, the mass of empty set alone is not consistent in some cases. Also, the thresholds used were chosen either arbitrary or tuned manually without any computational method. In this paper, first the conflict is composed of two parameters instead of mass of empty set alone, and dynamic objects detection is performed using a threshold on the evolution of this conflict pair. Secondly, the paper introduces a general threshold along with a mathematical demonstration to compute it which can be used in different dynamic object detection cases. A real-time experiment is performed using the RB1-BASE robot equipped with a RGB-D camera and a laser scanner

Effects of Kinesiotape taping on plantar pressure and impact acceleration during walking

    Get PDF
Objectives: The aim of this study was to analyse the plantar pressure pattern, contact time, stride rate and impact acceleration in the shank during walking with and without Kinesio Tape (KT®) placed on two muscle groups: Peroneus and Triceps surae. Methods: 29 subjects (12 men, 17 women) participated in the study. KT® was placed on the triceps surae and peroneus and participants walked at two different speeds (V1: 0.73 m/s; V2:1.30 m/s) with and without KT®. The pedobarographic system Biofoot IBV® 6.0 was used to analyse plantar pressure (mean peak pressure [kPa]) in 5 foot areas and the kinematic variables of the study (contact time [s]; stride rate [steps/min]). One uni-axial accelerometer (Sportmetrics®) was placed on the shank for the impact loading analysis. Results: No significant difference was observed on plantar pressure (p>0.05), and kinematics variables (p>0.05) between the KT® and noKT® conditions. However, results revealed a relationship of dependence between speed and plantar pressure and kinematics parameters, especially under the rearfoot and the medial part of the foot (p<0.005). Conclusion: The results suggest that application of KT® on peroneus and triceps surae does not have a direct effect on the kinematic pattern of healthy individuals during walking

Human body flotation and organic responses to water immersion

Swimming is a physical activity performed in an environment where human beings are not adapted from an evolutionary point of view. For this reason, swimming for humans is considered an ontogenetic movement and not a phylogenetic one such as walking or running on land. Locomotion into the water has some very specific characteristics for the human being, since the body experiences a situation of hydrostatic microgravity which in most cases enables flotation. Flotation capacity is affected by the physicochemical properties of the water (temperature and osmolarity) and by the body characteristics of the immersed person. In this situation: (1) joints no longer experience the load implied by supporting body weight on land, (2) blood flows more easily, and (3) the type of muscular work is basically concentric. Body balance is other important aspects to take into account, especially in swimmers with amputated limbs or limbs paralysis. Finally, the thermoregulatory response of the human body to changes in water temperature is also considered a useful and extended recovery method

Effects of exercise in people with cerebral palsy. A review.

    Get PDF
Regardless the advances in medical science, it seems that the prevalence of cerebral palsy (CP) has been increasing during the last forty years. Cerebral palsy is associated with muscle weakness and impaired circulation that leads to muscle spasticity and deficits in motor control, thereby limiting the individual¿s ability to perform not only leisure, social or occupational activities but also basic daily tasks. In this sense, exercise is gaining popularity as an intervention choice for this population. Literature aiming to improve the quality of life of patients suffering from cerebral pathologies such as cerebral palsy has observed that both strength and aerobic training lead to significant benefits that improve the quality of life of these patients via a reduction in dependency, muscular deficits and improved cardiorespiratory capacity

The term encompasses fungal fungal diseases in humans. Because of its prevalence, today, we can say, that has been compared to dental caries and colds due undoubtedly to the high percentage of patients with the disease. Moreover, that recent epidemiological studies have shown that part per se alter the quality of life (personal, psychological level, walking...) also may result in undesirable complications, causing infectious diseases, and bacterial, involving high expenditure by causing disruption socio occupational psychological and physical deterioration, and potential social stigmatization. The lack of consensus regarding the multifactorial etiology has this condition and the prevalence of this disease at foot level, especially in the young and in athletes, leads us to improve existing knowledge in regard to classification diagnosis and treatment in the quest to update the concepts related to this foot disorders

Nowadays enterprise collaboration is becoming essential for valuable innovation and competitive advantage. This collaboration must be brought a step forward from technical collaboration till collective smart exploitation of global intelligence. The Internet of Future is expected to be composed of a mesh of interoperable Web Services accessed from all over the Web. This approach has not yet caught on since a global user-service interaction is still an open issue. This paper states our vision with regard to the next generation front-end web technology that will enable integrated access to services, contents and things in the Future Internet. This approach will enable the massive deployment of services over Internet in a user-centric fashion. Having this in mind, the rationale behind EzWeb, a reference architecture and implementation of an open Enterprise 2.0 Collaboration Platform that empower its users to co-produce and share instant applications is presente

Do children experience obsessional intrusive thoughts?

Introduction. Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a disabling condition that often begins in childhood. Cognitive behavioural therapy for paediatric OCD is effective and often considered the treatment of choice. While cognitive models of OCD have improved our understanding and interventions in adult populations, it has scarcely been investigated in children. Those models assume that obsessions are extreme variants of unwanted obsessional intrusive thoughts (OITs), which are almost universally experienced in the general populations. This assumption has received empirical support in adult samples but there are almost no studies analysing the presence of OITs in preadolescents. Method. 49 children (28 girls and 21 boys, mean age 9.1 years, range 8-10 years) were recruited from a community sample (two public schools in Spain). Participants were individually interviewed using the newly developed Children’s Anxious Thoughts Interview (CATI). Using the first part of the CATI, an interviewer explored whether participants had ever experienced OITs in six content domains. For each thought reported, an example was requested and subsequently analysed to determine whether it met criteria to be considered an OIT. The frequency (marked in a 100 mm visual analogue scale ranging from hardly ever to every day) and last date that the thought was experienced were also recorded. Participants also completed self-report measures of anxiety (SCAS) and obsessive-compulsive symptoms (ChOCI-R). Results. 33 children endorsed having experienced at least one OIT. The most frequently endorsed content related to harm (n=18) followed by doubt (n=14), superstition (n=4), order (n=2) and aggression (n=1). No contamination OITs were reported. Only 4 children endorsed more than one OIT, with the most frequent combination being harm and doubt. Of 33 children who had experienced at least one OIT, 14 reported having had one in the last 3 months and with a frequency of at least 50 (scale from 0 to 100). Children were divided into three groups according to frequency and recency of OIT experiences: frequent and recent OITs (n=14); OITs that were not frequent or recent (n=19); no OITs. Group scores on SCAS and ChOCI-R were compared using ANOVA. Group differences (p> .05) were found for both instruments. Post-hoc comparisons indicated that those children with frequent and recent OITs experienced significantly higher anxiety (SCAS) and more serious obsessions and compulsions (as shown by the interference scales of the ChOCI-R). Discussion. Our results show that children as young as 8-9 years old are able to report thoughts with the formal characteristics of intrusions and contents characteristics of OCD, although their prevalence may be not as high as in adults. Whilst the occasional recognition of an OIT was not associated with anxiety or OCD symptoms, recent and frequent experiences of OITs was associated with higher anxiety and OCD symptoms. These results are compatible with the cognitive model of OCD, which posits that it is not the experience of OITs themselves that lead to distress but certain pathological appraisals and coping mechanisms.
