    The role of the agent's outside options in principal-agent relationships

    We consider a principal-agent model of adverse selection where, in order to trade with the principal, the agent must undertake a relationship-specific investment which affects his outside option to trade, i.e. the payoff that he can obtain by trading with an alternative principal. This creates a distinction between the agent’s ex ante (before investment) and ex post (after investment) outside options to trade. We investigate the consequences of this distinction, and show that whenever an agent’s ex ante and ex post outside options differ, this may equip the principal with an additional tool for screening among different agent types, by randomizing over the probability with which trade occurs once the agent has undertaken the investment. In turn, this may enhance the efficiency of the optimal second-best contract

    Dynamic plate osteosynthesis for fracture stabilization: how to do it

    Plate osteosynthesis is one treatment option for the stabilization of long bones. It is widely accepted to achieve bone healing with a dynamic and biological fixation where the perfusion of the bone is left intact and micromotion at the fracture gap is allowed. The indications for a dynamic plate osteosynthesis include distal tibial and femoral fractures, some midshaft fractures, and adolescent tibial and femoral fractures with not fully closed growth plates. Although many lower limb shaft fractures are managed successfully with intramedullary nails, there are some important advantages of open-reduction-and-plate fixation: the risk of malalignment, anterior knee pain, or nonunion seems to be lower. The surgeon performing a plate osteosynthesis has the possibility to influence fixation strength and micromotion at the fracture gap. Long plates and oblique screws at the plate ends increase fixation strength. However, the number of screws does influence stiffness and stability. Lag screws and screws close to the fracture site reduce micromotion dramatically

    When humans and computers induce social stress through negative feedback: Effects on performance and subjective state

    People increasingly work with autonomous systems, which progressively take over functions previously performed exclusively by humans. This may lead to situations in which automated agents give negative performance feedback, which represents an important work-related social stressor. Little is known about how negative feedback provided by computers (as opposed to humans) affects human performance and subjective state. A first experiment (N = 60) focused on the influence of human feedback on performance. After participants had performed a cognitive task, they received a manipulated performance feedback (either positive or negative) from a human (comparing to a control with no feedback) and subsequent performance on several cognitive tasks and the participants' subjective state was measured. The results showed that while negative feedback had a negative influence on several subjective state measures, performance remained unimpaired. In a second experiment (N = 89), participants received manipulated negative feedback by a human or by a computer (or no feedback at all) after having completed an ability test. Subsequent performance was measured on attention tasks and creativity tasks and participants' subjective state was assessed. Although participants felt stressed by both negative computer and human feedback, subsequent performance was again not impaired. However, computer feedback was rated as being less fair than human feedback. Overall, our findings show that there are costs of protecting one's performance against negative feedback and they call for caution regarding the use of negative feedback by both human and automated agents in work settings

    Human and machine-induced social stress in complex work environments: Effects on performance and subjective state

    Social stress at work can lead to severe consequences. As a result of technological developments, social stress will increasingly be induced by machines. It is therefore crucial to understand how machine-induced social stress affects operators. The present study aimed to compare human and machine-induced social stress with regard to its effect on primary and secondary task performance, and on subjective state (e.g., self-esteem, mood and justice). 90 participants worked on a high-fidelity simulation of a complex work environment, on which they had received extensive training (2h15). Social stress was induced by a human or a machine using a combination of negative performance feedback and ostracism. Results indicate that social stress did not affect performance, affect or state self-esteem. Machine-induced and human-induced social stress overall had similar effects, except for the latter impairing perceived justice. We discuss implications of these results for automation at the workplace and outline future research directions

    Parameters of scalar resonances from the combined analysis of data on processes ππππ,KKˉ,ηη\pi\pi\to\pi\pi,K\bar{K},\eta\eta and J/ψJ/\psi decays

    A combined analysis of data on isoscalar S-wave processes ππππ,KK,ηη\pi\pi\to\pi\pi,K\overline{K},\eta\eta and on decays J/ψϕππ,ϕKKJ/\psi\to\phi\pi\pi,\phi K\overline{K} from the DM2, Mark III and BESIII collaborations is performed to study f0f_0 mesons. The method of analysis is based on analyticity and unitarity and uses an uniformization procedure. In the analysis limited only to the multi-channel ππ\pi\pi-scattering data, two possible sets of parameters of the f0(500)f_0(500) were found: in both cases the mass was about 700 MeV but the total width was either about 600 or 930 MeV. The extension of the analysis using only the DM2 and Mark III data on the J/ψJ/\psi decays does not allow to choose between these sets. However, the data from BESIII on the di-pion mass distribution in the decay J/ψϕπ+πJ/\psi\to\phi\pi^+\pi^- clearly prefers the wider f0(500)f_0(500) state.     Characterization of yeast mutants lacking alkaline ceramidases YPC1 and YDC1

    Humans and yeast possess alkaline ceramidases located in the early secretory pathway. Single deletions of the highly homologous yeast alkaline ceramidases YPC1 and YDC1 have very little genetic interactions or phenotypes. Here, we performed chemical-genetic screens to find deletions/conditions that would alter the growth of ypc1∆ydc1∆ double mutants. These screens were essentially negative, demonstrating that ceramidase activity is not required for cell growth even under genetic stresses. A previously reported protein targeting defect of ypc1∆ could not be reproduced and reported abnormalities in sphingolipid biosynthesis detected by metabolic labeling do not alter the mass spectrometric lipid profile of ypc1∆ydc1∆ cells. Ceramides of ypc1∆ydc1∆ remained normal even in presence of aureobasidin A, an inhibitor of inositolphosphorylceramide synthase. Moreover, in caloric restriction conditions Ypc1p reduces chronological life span. A novel finding is that, when working backwards as a ceramide synthase in vivo, Ypc1p prefers C24 and C26 fatty acids as substrates, whereas it prefers C16:0, when solubilized in detergent and working in vitro. Therefore, its physiological activity may not only concern the minor ceramides containing C14 and C16. Intriguingly, so far the sole discernable benefit of conserving YPC1 for yeast resides with its ability to convey relative resistance toward H₂O₂

    Predicting users' first impressions of website aesthetics with a quantification of perceived visual complexity and colorfulness

    Users make lasting judgments about a website's appeal within a split second of seeing it for the first time. This first impression is influential enough to later affect their opinions of a site's usability and trustworthiness. In this paper, we demonstrate a means to predict the initial impression of aesthetics based on perceptual models of a website's colorfulness and visual complexity. In an online study, we collected ratings of colorfulness, visual complexity, and visual appeal of a set of 450 websites from 548 volunteers. Based on these data, we developed computational models that accurately measure the perceived visual complexity and colorfulness of website screenshots. In combination with demographic variables such as a user's education level and age, these models explain approximately half of the variance in the ratings of aesthetic appeal given after viewing a website for 500ms only.Engineering and Applied Science
