Physiological comparison of root trainer and polybag plants of Hevea brasiliensis

The physiology of   root trainer plants in comparison to polybag plants of two popular Hevea clones,   RRII 105 and RRII 430 was studied. Dry matter partitioning and physiological   parameters like leaf water potential, relative water content, chlorophyll   content, PS II activity and photosynthetic efficiency were studied in root   trainer and polybag plants and compared. Root trainer plants had only 55 per   cent less biomass than polybag plants at two whorled stage. No variation was   noticed in water relations among the poly bag and root trainer plants. Total   chlorophyll content and chlorophyll a/b ratio were higher in polybag   plants than root trainer plants of both clones. Polybag plants showed higher   light saturation point when gas exchange was measured at different   photosynthetic photon flux densities. Though there was no variation in   effective quantum yield (Φ PSII), the root trainer plants of RRII 105 showed   more excess electrons (J*) at higher light intensities. Photosystem II   activity and photosynthetic carbon assimilation rates were less in root   trainer plants under open and shaded conditions. The results indicated that   the root confinement in root trainer plants has significant effect on the   physiology of plants. The reduction in plant biomass and other physiological   traits in root trainer plants can be attributed to the limited space in the   container, limiting further root growth, which otherwise is beneficial for   giving a priming effect as long as the plant remains in the container.   Further studies are needed to quantify this ‘stress factor’ in root trainer   plants and its implications in growth and establishment of plants in the   field

A REVIEW ON ANCIENT CONCEPTS OF KUMARAGARA, KRIDABHOOMI AND KRIDANAKA W.S.R.TO PEDIATRIC CARE UNIT, PLAY GROUND AND TOYS

Ayurveda is one of the earliest medical systems that have got a strong scientific foundation formulated by experiments and observations of ancient wisdom. Kaumarbhritya (pediatrics) is one among eight branches of Ayurveda. Acharya Kashyapa has given prime importance to Kaumarbhritya for the very first time. As far as the branch pediatrics is concerned, in Ayurveda it accompanies a broad area. Virtually every aspect of a growing child is connected with play. Now days, many textbooks of pediatrics are focusing more on pediatric diseases and its management, but the concept of toys, play and its importance remain untouched. Years ago, Acharyas has described characteristics of Kumaragara (Neonatal care unit/pediatric ward), Kumaradhara (guardian), Kridanaka (toys) and Kridabhumi (play ground) which all are the pillars of a healthy and prosperous human being. Here, an effort is made to collect those aspects and validating that data with available evidence based references.

Background: The aim of this study was to evaluate efficacy of segmental cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) in detecting bony changes in condyle and thickness of roof of glenoid fossa in temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders. Methods: The study group comprised of 10 temporomandibular disorders (TMD) patients of either sex between the age group of 20-60 years diagnosed as TMDs by clinical evaluation using the research diagnostic criteria was considered. After the clinical examination, radiographic investigations were carried out which included digital OPG, transcranial radiograph and CBCT scan. TMJ Evaluation included: (a) bony changes of the condyle (flattening, erosion, sclerosis, osteophytes, resorption); (b) joint space (normal, increased, reduced, bony contact between the condyle and the mandibular fossa); and (c) bony changes of mandibular fossa (normal, sclerosis, erosion, resorption). The radiographic findings were statistically analysed. Results: Significant difference between OPG, transcranial and CBCT were found for the presence of erosion (P =0.000), thickness of roof of glenoid fossa (P =0.000), deformed contour (P =0.001), joint space (P =0.011), subchondral sclerosis (P =0.011), irregularity of articular surface and eminence (P =0.000), flattening (P =0.050). Conclusions: Using CBCT as imaging technique in our study to detect osseous changes in the TMJ was proved to be effective as compared to the conventional radiographic techniques, the results achieved with CBCT was 100%.The results obtained in our study prove to be a full proof one and it seems to promise to go one step closer to detect progression and severity of the osseous changes in the condylar head and mandibular fossa in patients with TMDs

Yolk Sac Tumor (Endodermal Sinus Tumor) with Component of Mature Cystic Teratoma at Sacrococcygeal Region in Children less than Two Years - A Case Series

    Get PDF
Sacrococcygeal germ cell tumors in neonates and infants are always primary. About 75-95% of the cases occur in females. Chromosomal analysis of these extragonadal teratomas suggest that they arise from postmitotic/ premitotic cells. The majority of sacrococcygeal tumors are benign, teratomas. These benign teratomas have potential for malignant transformation. The most common malignancy which can occur is yolk sac tumor (YST) also known as endodermal sinus tumor (EST). Malignant germ cell tumors account for 3% of childhood neoplasms and extragonadal germ cell tumor constitutes 1–5% of all germ cell tumors which are highly aggressive. Presented here are three cases of yolk sac tumor arising in a sacrococcygeal mature cystic teratoma in less than 2 years of age

Large tuneable exchange fields due to purely paramagnetically limited domain wall superconductivity

The ability to locally apply and tune large magnetic fields is a crucial requirement for several devices, most notably for detection and generation of majorana fermions. Such a functionality can be achieved in Superconductor (S) /Ferromagnet (F) bilayers, where superconductivity is strengthened on top of domain walls due to local lowering of the proximity induced effective exchange fields. This is predicted to result in significant superconducting Tc enhancements and possible complete magnetic controlled switching on and off of the superconducting state. By using thin films of superconducting Nb and ferromagnetic insulating (GdN) bilayers, and through detailed magneto-transport measurements, we demonstrate the previously unobserved phenomena of complete switching in and out of the S state in S/F bilayers. In the thinnest of Nb layers, we estimate that the domain wall state induced tunability of proximity induced exchange fields can be as high as 1.3T with application of in plane external fields of only a few mT.Comment: 3 figure

Mobile Power Infrastructure Planning and Operational Management for Smart City Applications

    Get PDF
The paper presents new strategies and algorithms for future mobile power infrastructure planning and operational management in smart cities. The efforts have been made to develop a resilient Electric Vehicle (EV) infrastructure for smart city applications. The goal of this work is to maximize the profit of utility and EV owners participating in real-time smart city energy market subjected to numerous techno-economic constraints of the EVs and power distribution system. For effective real-time applications, the knowledge of artificial intelligence and internet of things (IoT) are used in the proposed model. In order to validate the proposed model for smart city applications, IEEE 33-bus radial distribution network is adopted as a small city power network. The simulation results of proposed model are found to be encouraging when it is compared with the case in which conventional strategies are used
