    Ensemble methods have become ubiquitous for the solution of Bayesian inference problems. State-of-the-art Langevin samplers such as the Ensemble Kalman Sampler (EKS), Affine Invariant Langevin Dynamics (ALDI) or its extension using weighted covariance estimates rely on successive evaluations of the forward model or its gradient. A main drawback of these methods hence is their vast number of required forward calls as well as their possible lack of convergence in the case of more involved posterior measures such as multimodal distributions. The goal of this paper is to address these challenges to some extend. First, several possible adaptive ensemble enrichment strategies that successively enlarge the number of particles in the underlying Langevin dynamics are discusses that in turn lead to a significant reduction of the total number of forward calls. Second, analytical consistency guarantees of the ensemble enrichment method are provided for linear forward models. Third, to address more involved target distributions, the method is extended by applying adapted Langevin dynamics based on a homotopy formalism for which convergence is proved. Finally, numerical investigations of several benchmark problems illustrates the possible gain of the proposed method, comparing it to state-of-the-art Langevin samplers

    Effects of microzooplankton and mixotrophy in an experimental planktonic food web

    Microzooplankton have received increased attention as an important trophic link between the microbial loop and calanoid copepods. On the basis of food size spectra overlap in some microzooplankton groups and calanoid copepods, however, such microzooplankton could function as competitors rather than as food for calanoid copepods (intraguild prey). Mixotrophic flagellates presumably represent a link between the microbial loop and the micro and mesozooplankton. We investigated the effects of microzooplankton and mixotrophy by altering the presence of a heterotrophic dinoflagellate and of a mixotrophic nanoflagellate in artificial food webs with calanoid copepods as terminal consumers. Overall system productivity was manipulated by two levels of nutrient enrichment. The heterotrophic dinoflagellate drastically reduced the nanophytoplankton and enhanced the reproduction of the copepods, suggesting that its role as a competitor is negligible compared to its function as a trophic link. In spite of the presence of heterotrophic nanoflagellates, the mixotroph had a strong negative effect on the picophytoplankton and (presumably) on bacterial biomass. At the same time, the mixotroph enhanced the atomic C:N ratio of the seston biomass, indicating a higher efficiency in overall primary production. Copepod reproduction was enhanced in the presence of the mixotrophic nanoflagellate.     Effects of Control-Feel Configuration on Airplane Longitudinal Control Response

    A general study of longitudinal control feel was made with a transonic fighter-type airplane equipped with a control-feel system which 4 was adjustable in flight. The control-feel system provided a feel component with individual gain control in proportion to each of five quantities: stick deflection, stick rate, airplane normal acceleration, pitching acceleration, and pitching velocity. A number of feel configurations were investigated in flight and analytically. These feel configurations had feel components in various amounts from various combinations of these five sources. The results contained herein are all for an airplane center-of-gravity position at approximately 25 percent of the mean aerodynamic chord, a Mach number of 0.85, and an altitude of 28,000 feet. Results are presented as time histories, as plots of the variation of peak force per g with input duration, and as frequency-response plots. A number of frequency-response plots are included to illustrate the effects of choice of feel sources and gains. The results illustrate the desirability of balancing a normal-acceleration feel component with a pitching-acceleration feel component. Pitching-velocity feel is shown to be useful for shaping control-system frequency response. The results suggest the desirability of designing a control-feel system to a large extent by means of frequency-response analysis in order to keep the shapes of the frequency-response curves within desirable limits
