    Corporate Social Responsibility Communication: A Multi-method Approach on Stakeholder Expectations and Managers’ Intentions

    Organisations need to legitimise their behaviour in order to be accepted and supported by society. This study analyses the different perspectives on corporate social responsibility (CSR) in a multi-method approach. First, a content analysis of the companies’ annual and CSR reports and qualitative interviews with the communications executives analyses the social engagement that is communicated and the companies’ motives for their activities. Second, the expectations of potential stakeholders regarding the social engagement of companies are analysed via a quantitative survey. Results show that the reporting of philanthropic activities dominates the annual reports. However, as interviews show, these altruistic motives were mostly associated with expectations on economic benefits, where differentiation from competitors is mentioned as the main motive for the CSR engagement. With respect to topics, the CSR activities of the companies correspond in general to the stakeholders’ expectations. Nonetheless, hardly any of the stakeholders are able to bring an explicit CSR activity of a company to mind. This might be because this is ‘pull-information’ for which they actively have to look, but companies might also be failing to effectively communicate their CSR engagement

    Trust in companies and in CEOs: a comparative study of the main influences

    Trust is a crucial factor for the long-term economic success of a company. However, not only does the company establish trust, but the CEO representing the company builds up trust as well and, therefore, also influences the company's success. Our study examines how different dimensions of trust (i.e., ability, integrity, benevolence, and information quality) influence the degree of overall trust in a company and in CEOs. Nevertheless, dimensions that influence trust in a CEO can be completely different to those influencing trust in companies. Companies and CEOs that act on an international level can hardly be experienced individually, and thus people get information about the company via media use. Therefore, additionally we examine which kind of media is used for getting information about a company or CEO and whether a relationship exists between media use and trust. Findings from a survey in Switzerland (n=245) show that companies are more trusted than CEOs and that the items which influence overall trust differ between CEOs and companies. Social responsibility as a benevolence item is important for both groups. Regarding information on different media channels, users of traditional media like newspapers, TV, and radio are most critical regarding trust in companies and CEO

Alternatively an algorithmic construction of such a bracket for the two-dimensional vorticity equation is presented here. Starting from the Lie--Poisson form and its algebraic properties it is shown how the Nambu representation can be explicitly constructed as the continuum limit from the structure preserving Zeitlin discretization

    Wirtschaftsberichterstattung im Rundfunk der Schweiz: eine inhaltsanalytische Untersuchung zu Unterschieden zwischen den Sprachregionen

    The study analyzes to which extent economic broadcasting coverage differs between the three main language regions – the German-, French- and Italianspeaking parts of Switzerland. According to the obligations of Public Service, one main function which should be fulfilled by public broadcasting is the integration of the different language regions. Therefore, we conducted a content analysis of economic news in main public and private TV and radio news broad-casts in the three language regions. We evaluated the quantity of economic news, but also the relevance of the covered events and comprehensibility of the economic news. Findings indicate that in all three language regions, about 20 percent of the news broadcasts are economic news. Topics concerning the meso level, companies and industries, are by far most often covered in all three languages. This provides the possibility of interpersonal conversation about these subjects and thus helps integration. Nevertheless, events which happen on a regional level in the other language regions are covered very infrequently

    Delayed wound repair in sepsis is associated with reduced local pro-inflammatory cytokine expression

    Sepsis is one of the main causes for morbidity and mortality in hospitalized patients. Moreover, sepsis associated complications involving impaired wound healing are common. Septic patients often require surgical interventions that in-turn may lead to further complications caused by impaired wound healing. We established a mouse model to the study delayed wound healing during sepsis distant to the septic focus point. For this reason cecal ligation and puncture (CLP) was combined with the creation of a superficial wound on the mouse ear. Control animals received the same procedure without CPL. Epithelialization was measured every second day by direct microscopic visualization up to complete closure of the wound. As interplay of TNF-α, TGF-β, matrix metalloproteinases (MMP), and tissue inhibitors of metalloproteinases (TIMP) is important in wound healing in general, TNF-α, TGF-β, MMP7, and TIMP1 were assessed immunohistochemical in samples of wounded ears harvested on days 2, 6, 10 and 16 after wounding. After induction of sepsis, animals showed a significant delay in wound epithelialization from day 2 to 12 compared to control animals. Complete wound healing was attained after mean 12.2± standard deviation (SD) 3.0 days in septic animals compared to 8.7± SD 1.7 days in the control group. Septic animals showed a significant reduction in local pro-inflammatory cytokine level of TNF-α on day 2 and day 6 as well as a reduced expression of TGF-β on day 2 in wounds. A significant lower expression of MMP7 as well as TIMP1 was also observed on day 2 after wounding. The induction of sepsis impairs wound healing distant to the septic focus point. We could demonstrate that expression of important cytokines for wound repair is deregulated after induction of sepsis. Thus restoring normal cytokine response locally in wounds could be a good strategy to enhance wound repair in sepsis

    Peptoids, or poly-N-substituted glycines, are characterised by broad structural diversity. Compared to peptides, they are less restricted in rotation and lack backbone-derived H bonding. Nevertheless, certain side chains force the peptoid backbone into distinct conformations. Designable secondary structures like helices or nanosheets arise from this knowledge. Herein, we report the copper-catalysed alkyne-azide cycloaddition (CuAAC) of macrocycles to form innovative tube-like tricyclic peptoids, giving access to host–guest chemistry or storage applications. Different linker systems make the single tubes tuneable in size and enable modifications within the gap. An azobenzene linker, which is reversibly switchable in conformation, was successfully incorporated and allowed for light-triggered changes of the entire tricyclic structure

    Die Open Access Database of Variables for Content Analysis DOCA sammelt, systematisiert und evaluiert Operationalisierungen für die standardisierte manuelle und automatisierte Inhaltsanalyse in der Kommunikationswissenschaft. DOCA soll Forschenden das Finden von geeigneten und etablierten bzw. getesteten Operationalisierungen (sowie den gesamten Codebüchern) für die standardisierte Inhaltsanalyse erleichtern. Für die kommunikationswissenschaftliche Forschung soll dies mit einer besseren Vergleichbarkeit inhaltsanalytischer Studien und Projekte sowie einer erhöhten Bedeutungszuschreibung der Transparenz von Operationalisierungen und Qualitätsindikatoren einhergehen. Mit dem vorliegenden Steckbrief sind zwei zentrale Zielsetzungen verbunden: Erstens soll über DOCA und deren Einsatzgebiete informiert werden und so auch der Bekanntheitsgrad dieser Forschungsinfrastruktur gesteigert werden. Zweitens soll dieser Artikel aus der Perspektive der Herausgeberinnen den Prozess und die damit verbundenen Herausforderungen für die Konzeption, Realisation und Aufrechterhaltung einer Forschungsinfrastruktur darlegen. The Open Access Database of Variables for Content Analysis (DOCA) collects, systematizes, and evaluates operationalizations for standardized manual and automatic content analysis in the field of communication science. DOCA aims to facilitate researchers in finding suitable and established or tested operationalizations (as well as complete codebooks) for standardized content analysis. For communication science research, this is expected to result in increased comparability of content analytic studies and projects, as well as greater emphasis on the transparency of operationalizations and quality indicators. The present fact sheet is associated with two central objectives: firstly, to provide information about DOCA and its applications, thereby increasing awareness of this research infrastructure. Secondly, from the personal perspective of the editors, this article aims to outline the process and associated challenges involved in the conception, realization, and maintenance of a research database

    Rate of acquired pulmonary vein stenosis after ablation of atrial fibrillation referred to electroanatomical mapping systems: Does it matter?

    Background: Thermal injury during radiofrequency ablation (RFA) of atrial fibrillation (AF) can lead to pulmonary vein stenosis (PVS). It is currently unclear if routine screening for PVS by imaging (echocardiography, computed tomography) is clinically meaningful and if there is a correlation between PVS and the electroanatomical mapping system (EAMS) used for the ablation procedure. It was therefore investigated in the current single center experience. Methods: All patients from January 2004 to December 2016 with the diagnosis of PVS after interventional ablation of AF by radiofrequency were retrospectively analyzed. From 2004 to 2007, transesophageal echocardiography was routinely performed as screening for RFA-acquired PVS (group A). Since 2008, diagnostics were only initiated in cases of clinical symptoms suggestive for PVS (group B). Results: The overall PVS rate after interventional RFA for AF of the documented institution is 0.72% (70/9754). The incidence was not influenced by screening: group A had a 0.74% PVS rate and group B a 0.72% rate (NS). Referred to as the EAMS, there were significant differences: 20/4229 (0.5%) using CARTO®, 48/4510 (1.1%) using EnSite®, 1/853 (0.1%) using MediGuide®, and 1/162 (0.6%) using Rhythmia®. Since 2009, no significant difference between technologies was found. Conclusions: The present analysis of 9754 procedures revealed 70 cases of PVS. The incidence of PVSis not related to screening but to the application of different EAMS. Possible explanations are technological backgrounds (magnetic vs. electrical), learning curves, operator experience, and work-flow differences. Furthermore, incorporation of new technologies seems to be associated with higher incidences of PVS before workflows are optimized
