    Personal and Community Factors as Predictors of different types of community engagement

    Citizen participation is an important element of local democracy because it increases residents’ influence over local community issues. Using a sample of 494 Israeli participants, this paper examines, for the first time, the unique and combined contribution of personal factors (self‐ esteem and mastery) and community factors (years of activity, knowledge of local services, trust in leaders, community commitment, and community belonging) to the explanation of the variance in each of two types of community engagement: development and planning, and activism and advocacy. Data analysis included hierarchical regression that examined all variables and possible interactions among them. The results indicate that mastery and the community variables, except for years of activity, predict both types of engagement. Interestingly, knowledge of services negatively predicts both, while trust in leaders also predicts both types of engagement, but in opposite directions. In conclusion, the paper considers how these findings might inform community work interventions

    Reactive scattering of H2 from Cu(100): comparison of dynamics calculations based on the specific reaction parameter approach to density functional theory with experiment

    We present new experimental and theoretical results for reactive scattering of dihydrogen from Cu(100). In the new experiments, the associative desorption of H2 is studied in a velocity resolved and final rovibrational state selected manner, using time-of-flight techniques in combination with resonance-enhanced multi-photon ionization laser detection. Average desorption energies and rota- tional quadrupole alignment parameters were obtained in this way for a number of (v = 0, 1) ro- tational states, v being the vibrational quantum number. Results of quantum dynamics calculations based on a potential energy surface computed with a specific reaction parameter (SRP) density func- tional, which was derived earlier for dihydrogen interacting with Cu(111), are compared with the results of the new experiments and with the results of previous molecular beam experiments on sticking of H2 and on rovibrationally elastic and inelastic scattering of H2 and D2 from Cu(100). The calculations use the Born-Oppenheimer and static surface approximations. With the functional derived semi-empirically for dihydrogen + Cu(111), a chemically accurate description is obtained of the molecular beam experiments on sticking of H2 on Cu(100), and a highly accurate descrip- tion is obtained of rovibrationally elastic and inelastic scattering of D2 from Cu(100) and of the orientational dependence of the reaction of (v = 1, j = 2 − 4) H2 on Cu(100). This suggests that a SRP density functional derived for H2 interacting with a specific low index face of a metal will yield accurate results for H2 reactively scattering from another low index face of the same metal, and that it may also yield accurate results for H2 interacting with a defected (e.g., stepped) surface of that same metal, in a system of catalytic interest. However, the description that was obtained of the average desorption energies, of rovibrationally elastic and inelastic scattering of H2 from Cu(100), and of the orientational dependence of reaction of (v = 0, j = 3 − 5, 8) H2 on Cu(100) compares less well with the available experiments. More research is needed to establish whether more accurate SRP-density functional theory dynamics results can be obtained for these observables if surface atom motion is added to the dynamical model. The experimentally and theoretically found dependence of the rotational quadrupole alignment parameter on the rotational quantum number provides evidence for rotational enhancement of reaction at low translational energies.Fil: Sementa, L..     Exciton spin relaxation in InAs/InGaAlAs/InP(001) quantum dashes emitting near 1.55 μm

D. acknowledges the financial support from the Foundation for Polish Science within the START fellowship.Exciton spin and related optical polarization in self-assembled InAs/In0.53Ga0.23Al0.24As/InP(001) quantum dashes emitting at 1.55 μm are investigated by means of polarization- and time-resolved photoluminescence, as well as photoluminescence excitation spectroscopy, at cryogenic temperature. We investigate the influence of highly non-resonant and quasi-resonant optical spin pumping conditions on spin polarization and spin memory of the quantum dash ground state. We show that a spin pumping scheme, utilizing the longitudinal-optical-phonon-mediated coherent scattering process, can lead to the polarization degree above 50%. We discuss the role of intrinsic asymmetries in the quantum dash that influence values of the degree of polarization and its time evolution.PostprintPeer reviewe

    Stroboscopic Vision as a Treatment for Retinal Slip Induced Motion Sickness

    Motion sickness in the general population is a significant problem driven by the increasingly more sophisticated modes of transportation, visual displays, and virtual reality environments. It is important to investigate non-pharmacological alternatives for the prevention of motion sickness for individuals who cannot tolerate the available anti-motion sickness drugs, or who are precluded from medication because of different operational environments. Based on the initial work of Melvill Jones, in which post hoc results indicated that motion sickness symptoms were prevented during visual reversal testing when stroboscopic vision was used to prevent retinal slip, we have evaluated stroboscopic vision as a method of preventing motion sickness in a number of different environments. Specifically, we have undertaken a five part study that was designed to investigate the effect of stroboscopic vision (either with a strobe light or LCD shutter glasses) on motion sickness while: (1) using visual field reversal, (2) reading while riding in a car (with or without external vision present), (3) making large pitch head movements during parabolic flight, (4) during exposure to rough seas in a small boat, and (5) seated and reading in the cabin area of a UH60 Black Hawk Helicopter during 20 min of provocative flight patterns

    Infrared Properties of Cataclysmic Variables from 2MASS: Results from the 2nd Incremental Data Release

    Because accretion-generated luminosity dominates the radiated energy of most cataclysmic variables, they have been ``traditionally'' observed primarily at short wavelengths. Infrared observations of cataclysmic variables contribute to the understanding of key system components that are expected to radiate at these wavelengths, such as the cool outer disk, accretion stream, and secondary star. We have compiled the J, H, and Ks photometry of all cataclysmic variables located in the sky coverage of the 2 Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS) 2nd Incremental Data Release. This data comprises 251 systems with reliably identified near-IR counterparts and S/N > 10 photometry in one or more of the three near-IR bands.Comment: 2 pages, including 1 figure.     High Prevalence of Abnormal Nocturnal Oximetry in Patients With Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy

    ObjectivesWe sought to determine the prevalence of nocturnal oxygen desaturation and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) in a population of patients with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM).BackgroundThe coexistence of sleep apnea and HCM, 2 common cardiovascular conditions, has been largely unrecognized in the treatment of patients with HCM. The nocturnal hypoxia-induced hyperadrenergic state in OSA is expected to worsen hemodynamics and outcomes in HCM.MethodsOne hundred subjects with HCM between June 1, 2006, and July 14, 2008, were screened with nocturnal oximetry. Clinical variables were collected for statistical analysis. Oximetry was classified abnormal (suspicion of sleep-disordered breathing) in the presence of repetitive desaturation (≥5 events/h) followed by a rapid return to baseline oxygen saturation (SaO2) level with a decrease of ≥4% and threshold of 90%.ResultsSeventy-one (71%) patients with HCM had abnormal nocturnal oximetry (71 ± 9%, 95% confidence interval: 62% to 80%). Subjects with abnormal oximetry were older (age 59.5 ± 15.3 years) and more were hypertensive (n = 39 [55%]) than those with normal oximetry (age 45.8 ± 18.5 years, n = 9 [31%], p < 0.001, p = 0.03). Patients with HCM were more symptomatic in the presence of abnormal oximetry (New York Heart Association functional class II to III) (62% vs. 83%, p = 0.023). HCM patients had a higher prevalence of abnormal nocturnal oximetry (n = 71, 71%) compared with a control group of similar age and sex distribution (n = 49, 49%) (p = 0.001).ConclusionsAbnormal nocturnal oximetry is common in patients with HCM, suggesting that OSA is prevalent. OSA may impact hemodynamics and symptoms in HCM. Further studies are needed to determine the long-term benefit of OSA treatment on hemodynamics and disease progression in HCM

    Nova V4743 Sagittarii 2002: An Intermediate Polar Candidate

    We present the results of 11 nights of CCD unfiltered photometry of V4743 Sgr (Nova Sgr 2002 # 3) from 2003 and 2005. We find two periods of 0.2799 d ~ 6.7 h and 0.01642 d ~ 24 min in the 2005 data. The long period is also present in the 2003 data, but only weak evidence of the shorter period is found in this year. The 24-min period is somewhat longer than the 22-min period, which was detected from X-ray observations. We suggest that the 6.7-h periodicity represents the orbital period of the underlying binary system and that the 24-min period is the beat periodicity between the orbital period and the X-ray period, which is presumably the spin period of the white dwarf. Thus, V4743 Sgr should be classified as an intermediate polar (DQ Her star). About six months after the nova outburst, the optical light curve of V4743 Sgr seemed to show quasi-periodic oscillations, which are typical of the transient phase in classical nova. Therefore, our results support the previous suggestion that the trans ition phase in novae may be related to intermediate polars.Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures, AJ accepte
