BACKGROUND: Whether sex differences exist in the inflammatory response after ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) remains to be elucidated. We studied leukocyte profiles and their prognostic value in men and women presenting with STEMI. METHODS: From a total of 552 consecutive STEMI patients, blood samples were collected at hospital admission. Linear regression was used to assess the relationship between leukocyte profiles and enzymatic infarct size. Cox regression was used to assess the association between leukocyte profiles and one-year mortality. RESULTS: Women presented with higher lymphocyte counts (2.3·109 cells/L (IQR 1.6-3.1) vs. 1.8·109 cells/L (IQR 1.4-2.5), p = 3.00 ∙ 10-4) and percentages (21.1% (IQR 14.4-28.1) vs. 17.1% (IQR 12.3-24.3), p = 0.004). Lymphocyte to monocyte ratio (LMR) was also higher in women (3.25 (IQR 2.56-4.5) vs. 2.68 (IQR 2.08-3.59), p = 7.28 ∙ 10-7). Higher LMR was associated with lower peak CK-MB (β = -0.27 (95% CI: -0.50, -0.03), p = 0.026), lower peak troponin T (β = -0.45 (95% CI: -0.77, -0.13), p = 0.006) and lower one-year mortality risk (HR 0.35 (95% CI: 0.13, 0.96), p = 0.042). CONCLUSION: At admission for STEMI, women present with higher lymphocyte count and LMR. Higher LMR is associated with smaller infarct size and decreased one-year mortality risk and could be used as a biomarker to predict outcome

In-situ spectroscopy of intrinsic Bi2Te3 topological insulator thin films and impact of extrinsic defects

Combined in-situ x-ray photoemission spectroscopy, scanning tunnelling spectroscopy and angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy of molecular beam epitaxy grown Bi2Te3 on lattice mismatched substrates reveal high quality stoichiometric thin films with topological surface states without a contribution from the bulk bands at the Fermi energy. The absence of bulk states at the Fermi energy is achieved without counter doping. We observe that the surface morphology and electronic band structure of Bi2Te3 are not affected by in-vacuo storage and exposure to oxygen, whereas major changes are observed when exposed to ambient conditions. These films help define a pathway towards intrinsic topological devices.Comment: 8 pages, 5 figure

Sympathetic Skin Response and Boston Questionnaire in Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

We aimed to determine relations between the sudomotor efferent nerve fiber function and Boston questionnaire (BQ) in idiopathic carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS). Median nerve-induced sympathetic skin responses (SSRs) evoked by wrist stimulation were recorded in 108 CTS patients and compared with those in 88 healthy volunteers. The Boston questionnaire form (BQF) was applied to the subjects. All patients and healthy individuals were questioned about the autonomic symptoms in the hand (red or purple skin coloration, excessive sweating, and feeling cold). The average SSR latencies of the patients with CTS were significantly longer than those in the control group (P < 0.001). Positive significant, while weak, correlations were found between the SSR latency, autonomic symptoms, and total sympathetic system scores. No statistically significant relationship was found between the Boston symptom severity, functional capacity scores, and SSR latency. The latter obtained through wrist stimulation was sensitive to support the sudomotor sympathetic dysfunction in patients with CTS. No relationship between the BQF and SSR can be related to the fact that these indices evaluate different aspects of CTS.

Promiscuous Feeding Across Multiple Honey Bee Hosts Amplifies the Vectorial Capacity of \u3ci\u3eVarroa destructor\u3c/i\u3e

Varroa destructor is a cosmopolitan pest and leading cause of colony loss of the European honey bee. Historically described as a competent vector of honey bee viruses, this arthropod vector is the cause of a global pandemic of Deformed wing virus, now endemic in honeybee populations in all Varroa-infested regions. Our work shows that viral spread is driven by Varroa actively switching from one adult bee to another as they feed. Assays using fluorescent microspheres were used to indicate the movement of fluids in both directions between host and vector when Varroa feed. Therefore, Varroa could be in either an infectious or naïve state dependent upon the disease status of their host. We tested this and confirmed that the relative risk of a Varroa feeding depended on their previous host’s infectiousness. Varroa exhibit remarkable heterogeneity in their host-switching behavior, with some Varroa infrequently switching while others switch at least daily. As a result, relatively few of the most active Varroa parasitize the majority of bees. This multiple-feeding behavior has analogs in vectorial capacity models of other systems, where promiscuous feeding by individual vectors is a leading driver of vectorial capacity. We propose that the honeybee-Varroa relationship offers a unique opportunity to apply principles of vectorial capacity to a social organism, as virus transmission is both vectored and occurs through multiple host-to-host routes common to a crowded society

Petroleum-Collecting And Dispersing Chemicals For Cleaning Sea Surface From Thin Petroleum Slicks

Monoethylolamide, diethylolamide and triethanolamine ester synthesized by us based on fish oil and their phosphate derivatives being surface-active and ecologically safe possess a high capacity of petroleum collecting and dispersing. When introducing phosphate group, a tendency to replacement of petroleum slick dispersing by its collection (accumulation into a spot) is observed. Efficiency of the chemicals change depends on the type and concentration of ions in the water. Such salts as NaCl, KI, KBr, and MgSO4 positively influence petroleum-collecting activity whereas K2CO3 and NaHCO3 cause petroleum dispersing

Assessment of the roughness factor effect and the intrinsic catalytic activity for hydrogen evolution reaction on Ni-based electrodeposits

The hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) was studied in 30 wt.% KOH solution at temperatures ranging between 30 and 80 °C on three type of electrodes: (i) rough pure Ni electrodeposits, obtained by applying a large current density; (ii) smooth NiCo electrodeposits; (iii) smooth commercial Ni electrodes. By using steady-state polarization curves and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) the surface roughness factor and the intrinsic activities of the catalytic layers were determined. These techniques also permitted us to determine the mechanism and kinetics of the HER on the investigated catalysts. Different AC models were tested and the appropriate one was selected. The overall experimental data indicated that the rough/porous Ni electrode yields the highest electrocatalytic activity in the HER. Nevertheless, when the effect of the surface roughness was taken into consideration, it was demonstrated that alloying Ni with Co results in an increased electrocatalytic activity in the HER when comparing to pure Ni. This is due to an improved intrinsic activity of the material, which was explained on the basis of the synergism among the catalytic properties of Ni (low hydrogen overpotential) and of Co (high hydrogen adsorption).Isaac Herraiz-Cardona is grateful to the Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovacion (Spain) for a postgraduate grant (Ref. Identification of Radiopure Titanium for the LZ Dark Matter Experiment and Future Rare Event Searches

The LUX-ZEPLIN (LZ) experiment will search for dark matter particle interactions with a detector containing a total of 10 tonnes of liquid xenon within a double-vessel cryostat. The large mass and proximity of the cryostat to the active detector volume demand the use of material with extremely low intrinsic radioactivity. We report on the radioassay campaign conducted to identify suitable metals, the determination of factors limiting radiopure production, and the selection of titanium for construction of the LZ cryostat and other detector components. This titanium has been measured with activities of 238^{238}Ue_{e}~<<1.6~mBq/kg, 238^{238}Ul_{l}~<<0.09~mBq/kg, 232^{232}The_{e}~=0.28±0.03=0.28\pm 0.03~mBq/kg, 232^{232}Thl_{l}~=0.25±0.02=0.25\pm 0.02~mBq/kg, 40^{40}K~<<0.54~mBq/kg, and 60^{60}Co~<<0.02~mBq/kg (68\% CL). Such low intrinsic activities, which are some of the lowest ever reported for titanium, enable its use for future dark matter and other rare event searches. Monte Carlo simulations have been performed to assess the expected background contribution from the LZ cryostat with this radioactivity. In 1,000 days of WIMP search exposure of a 5.6-tonne fiducial mass, the cryostat will contribute only a mean background of 0.160±0.0010.160\pm0.001(stat)±0.030\pm0.030(sys) counts.Comment: 13 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in Astroparticle Physic
